SOME INFORMATION, SOME FORECASTS

MARKETS IN APRIL & MAY 2022

EDITORIAL

Pragat Dvivedi, Founder Editor

“What I foresee is, readymade furniture is going to grow, specially the kitchen and wardrobe segment. Year 2022-24 will be a phase that will see a big bounce in Particle board segment, apart from growth in Prelam MDF.”

26

In general the sales were weak during April 2022. The market was hit mainly due to three reasons. First is the race for meeting the target sales during March, and/ or panic buying in anticipation of price-rise. Second reason was lack of work force on sites as well as industries that led to low movement of goods and poor payment rotation. The third key reason was weak sentiments driven by steep jump in steel, cement, gas, fuel prices and this created a mindset of “let’s see, let’s wait” approach. The hopes are pinned on May 2nd week and beyond when workers will be back and markets are expected to build pace, although stability is expected only by the next month. Plywood prices in May were steady as timber prices were stable. In laminate segment, prices eased up a bit. Liner prices have seen some easing up in tune to INR 15 to 20 but rest of the thickness categories are on the same levels due to higher cost of paper procurement. The HPL decorative segment is expected to do better during June and July because many of the stalled projects have started to roll. The organized laminate segment is already seeing a pickup in demand. The MDF and Particle Board sector witnessed some selling pressure as supplies increased. The MDF plants have not increased prices so far despite the rising timber cost. Selling pressure is coming back with the stability in logistics world over. Softening of container prices helped the importers to grow their volumes. Since a year, readymade furniture making sector has grown, thanks to many new entrants. Most of the wood panel industry and trade people are keen to begin furniture production units. What I foresee is, readymade furniture is going to grow, specially the kitchen and wardrobe segment. Despite of fluctuations and rising raw materials prices, plywood is still the most trusted and widely traded material. Year 2022-24 will be a phase that will see a big bounce in Particle board segment, apart from growth in Prelam MDF. The uses of acrylic laminates are helping the consumption and demand for calibrated plywood but the trade mechanism is still not favorable for calibrated plywood producers. I hope to see a more rational approach in each of the product category where markets need to see price comparison with respect to product quality, product characteristics and warranty on the product. We need to learn and unlearn many things of past after this pandemic phase. See you at Indiawood, Bangalore! Stay active, stay hopeful! Happy New Financial Year!

LOUVER PANELS ARE MOST SOUGHT HIGHLIGHTERS TODAY

APNI BAAT

Rajiv Parashar, Editor

This is a new product in India and there are around 100 catalogues available in the market. Imported louvers from South Korea and China have major market share in this category along with a dozen of companies that have started production locally.

30

Pandemic has affected the customer preferences a lot because the living style has noted a shift during the last two years. People have become more concerned about health, safety, comfort, beauty, decor and style of living. Now, people want more open spaces, less clutter furniture, and maintenance free wall panels in their homes. Easy and fast installation of any interior products and Do It Yourself (DIY) kind of panels and furniture has grown. People want more Pre-Finished Surface products for their interior work, hence the charm of louvers panels has emerged among customers. Louvers Panel is a pre-finished decorative panel, which is installed easily and the aesthetic outcome is very different. Interior contractors prefer to use this material due to fast and charming interiors. The vital part of this application is its quick installation and least wastage. However this is a new product in India and there are around 100 catalogues available in the market. Imported louvers from South Korea and China have major market share in this category along with a dozen of companies that have started production locally. As per report, imported Louvers Panel quality is said to be superior because they use high quality foils, virgin raw materials and offer innovative designs. Import based brands claim the better quality of their products but off late domestic producers also have improved their quality. Domestic producers are running well today with a waiting period of orders at their hand is very long. However, Indian producers are working very hard to match the Korean quality, with around a dozen new in Louvers manufacturing by next year. Sighting the demand scenario, there are many new categories available in louvers panels, such as MDF, PVC and ACP based louvers panels. MDF based louvers are imported in India, whereas Indian companies are producing PVC and ACP based louvers. Alstone has recently launched ACP louvers and was liked. I can say ‘Louvers panel has become the fastest growing surface highlighter today, which is now reaching to tier 2-3 cities. It has become the most ‘searched and asked’ product by wood and decorative panel retailers. This issue has covered interaction with young and charming new generation entrepreneurs from industry such as Mr. Rushil Thakkar from Rushil Decor Ltd, Mr. Abhiroop Agarwal from Realply Industries, Mr. Imran Patanwala from Maria Decor and Mr. Nikunj Agarwal from Matchwell Decor. Besides, Interaction with Mr. Nikhil Arora of Virgo Group and Mr Rajat Salhotra of Advance Laminates during their product launches event has also been published. The view of these young entrepreneurs will inspire their fellow industry people, must read. Keeping our readers updated, there are many news reports on plywood, MDF, Decorative Veneers, Laminates, decor panels etc in this issue. This time a bigger INDIA INTERIOR RETAILING (IIR) is going to be held on dated 2-3-4 September 2022 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Block your date and tickets! Have a nice time!

CARPENTERS/WORKERS SHORTAGE IMPACT WOOD PANEL DEMAND

NEWS WATCH

oqM iSuy VªsM esa dkjisaVj@ysoj dh deh ls ekax çHkkfor

he month of April was slow with respect to demand in the wood panel industry. The sales volumes on retail sides have shown a dip across the country. For which the reason identified is, lack of workers and carpenters on sites. The Eid festival was also a significant region for the dullness and many work sites were shut due to absence of “karigar, carpenters and contractors.

The northern region has shown a sharper dip in demand. The marriage season is also being blamed as a dampener for sales although 2nd week of May onwards, demand is expected to improve. From the perspective of Retail counters side, the sale volume in Laminates, Plywood, Prelam Particle board and Edge band is said to be dull if compared to February and March 2022 figures, The weakness in markets is also being attributed to power cuts, acute sharp jump in material cost as well as some negative sentiments.

The same is visible on furniture makers' side: find Ply Reporter and FDT magazine survey. There has been sluggishness on those OEMs who have shifted their focus from office furniture to the Residential segment in the recent past. Although the old and established furniture makers are still flush with huge orders and order pendency. The Ply Reporter estimates indicate that the mid-priced ‘machine made’ furniture making sector was also a bit slow whereas premium furniture making class had no impact. The retailers agreed that there is a down fall of around 20% for leading counters but the same was in tune to 35 to 40 % for average retailers. Distributors blame it on summer holidays, Eid and poor demand due to inflation but most of them expect the revival by May end. The month of June is expected to witness a pickup in material demand when workers will return and sites will begin to operate smoothly.

REALPLY CALIBTRATED PLYWOOD HAS BEEN A BIG HIT

MR. ABHIROOP AGARWAL,

Chief Business Development Officer, Realply Realply has launched its Calibrated Plywood with the setting up of a new line of calibrated plywood where they are producing around 70 to 80 MT of materials every day. The Calibrated Plywood has been a big hit since it was launched in December 2020. Now they have been utilizing their full capacity and are looking for further expansion for manufacturing. What the market has accepted the calibration in plywood is less than 0.2mm thickness variation that he meets perfectly at his production line. Here is a Q&A with Mr Abhiroop Agarwal.

What is the specialty of your calibrated plywood? It is four times pressed, both sides calibrated. All the material we produce is 100% calibrated as we don’t produce any non-calibrated material. We make sure that there is no core gap in our plywood and there is no core overlapping as well. Whichever or wherever on the plywood you make a cut can see limp core throughout. www.plyreporter.com

Whereas if we compare to our species for
