A factor of Demand, Liquidity, Rotation and Market Sentiments Hello friends, India has witnessed one of the biggest reforms of the era with the announcement of demonetisation of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 banknotes on 8th November last month. Though PM Narendra Modi has stressed that India's economy is expected to grow fivefold by 2040, it is clear that the country is currently reeling under short-term turbulence. Unless the new currency replaces the old and proper circulation is restored, there will be slowdown in the economic activities in general and more in the Building & Design sector. Demand has started to hit the lowest for some products. Though the situation may phase-out soon but for the time being, revenues have frozen while the fixed costs continue, especially for the small to medium sector enterprises. Being a part of the ecosystem, the entire chain is hit with weak demand & poor market sentiments, right from a consumer to the retailer, distributor, manufacturer and the service provider. Except for the opinions from people, there is virtually no data at the moment on how much is the impact. Surfaces Reporter with article on "Demonetisation: Boon or Bomb!" is set to guage the immediate impact. We received mixed responses. In short to mid-term, the situation is expected to normalise. There have been association meets throughout the country. During our interactions, various markets have responded to the move most positively. Real estate sector is expected to be recovering from various ailments it had been plagued for years. The industry is hoping the regulatory changes coming soon would impact the sector positively to enable fresh funds, growth & investment. Surfaces Reporter's message to everyone operating in the real estate, architecture, design and building materials segment: “Currently, demand & fund rotations are affected due to pressure of the situation. Majority of the markets believe that the phase is temporary. It is time not only to win the situation with your vision & hardwork but also to focus on preparing yourself for getting the best of share as the brighter days approach. We see the starting of Essentialism in Design and Buying behavior as one of the major consequences of Demonetisation. Sales of high-end products like marble, bath, designer tiles, wood flooring and other handmade & imported niche items may take a backseat for a while but it will bounce back faster for those who learn to sell to the organized segment rather than waiting for fat ghost customers. Some suggestions are in Page 110. Similarly, I urge architects & designers to be ready for the new set of clients as well. A detailed article will address this in the coming issues. Since print version of Surfaces Reporter is monthly, we recommend you to stay informed with regular updates through newsletters from our web version www.surfaces.in. Let's walk together toward a brighter New Year. Happy 2017

luxury market india
Post Demonetisation With suggestions from Surfaces Reporter for the bright & passionate entrepreneurs operating in the luxury domain connected to Architecture & Design. Others may find something useful as well! The Demonetisation drive has adversely affected the Luxury goods market due to many reasons. Firstly, since luxury items are not the products of necessity, people are busy procuring necessary things as there is limitation in exchanging as well as withdrawal of currency. Secondly, Luxury is Aspirational. During the current scenario while the entire country is trying to transform the way in which we transact, aspirational products are definitely meant to take a back seat.
