$7.7m for community health hub and sports pavilion in Warralily
ACCESS GRANTED BY JAMES TAYLOR
HEALTH and recreation infrastructure in the Armstrong Creek growth area has been given a boost with the announcement of a $7.7 million grant from the state government. Most of the money – $7.1 million – will be used to build a health and community hub on the extension of Burvilles Road in the Warralily estate. The centre will run a number of programs inside the same building,
including three and four year old kinder, maternal and child health, consulting rooms, playgroup space, flexible meeting and offices, spaces for youth, aged and disability services, public internet, and provision for a visiting mobile library. A $500,000 community sport pavilion, to provide shelter for sports and recreational groups, will also be built on Burvilles Road. Construction on both facilities is expected to start mid-2015 and finish a year later.
The City of Greater Geelong, which received the grants, will also get $140,000 for infrastructure planning and implementation. Warralily says the hub and pavilion will be part of a proposed neighbourhood shopping centre, which will become the key entry point for the estate. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said he welcomed last week’s announcement by Planning Minister Matthew Guy. “These state-of-the-art facilities for this growing region within the greater
Geelong area will support the estimated forecast population growth of about 50,000 people. “The new health and community centre and sporting pavilion will provide muchneeded meeting places and community hubs, giving essential services for the new residents of Armstrong Creek. “The new facilities will add to the liveability of the area and be drawcards for people who will live in this new suburb of Geelong.”
Mr Guy said 600 residences were under way or completed in Armstrong Creek, with an expected target of 800 residences by the end of the year and another 600 next year “This is a key urban growth project in Geelong and will deliver a supply of residential land and a mix of retail, education and community uses, and provide up to 22,000 local jobs.” For more details, see “Warralily welcomes funding for family hub” on page 32.
