PONDS PROGRESS Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre expansion is progressing well, with stage one estimated to be complete by May 2014

BY ALI DEANE CONSTRUCTION work on the expansion of the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre on Pioneer Road – begun in May – is progressing well, with civil works completed and structural works commenced. The expansion, estimated to cost $65 million, will add 21,000 square metres to the existing shopping centre and is

being undertaken as part of a joint venture between Australian Unity Investments (AUI) and Coles Group Property Developments. The completed centre will consist of 35,000 square metres of retail space as well as offices and services. Major retailers including Coles and Kmart have already committed to take up space in the expanded shopping centre, joining current retailers Target, Priceline and Woolworths.

The new Coles will be the first superstore in the Geelong region, featuring Coles’ traditional grocery offer, alongside extra departments including a cookshop, homewares, home storage, gardening, Coles’ exclusive Mix fashion range and Coles’ fresh food offer including an instore bakery, fishmonger and butcher. Peter Lambden, AUI’s head of property and asset management, said AUI is very pleased with how the construction work

is going and anticipates that stage one of construction, which would see Coles and Kmart open for trading, will be completed by May 2014. “It is estimated that further development of the shopping centre will create around 200 jobs through the construction work alone, and approximately 500 retail jobs will be created at the conclusion of the build, when the expanded shopping centre opens for business. “We believe the expansion will be to the benefit of the Greater Geelong area, not only through meeting residents’ retail needs but through the valuable creation of jobs at a time when other businesses are

laying off staff,” Mr Lambden said. Stage two includes a specialty store mall including more fashion retailers, which will add over 40 specialty stores to the existing 80. The expansion will also bring a new medical centre, Priceline Pharmacy, Kmart Auto and additional banking services. One of the many advantages of the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre is the free parking for customers. There will be plenty of free three-hour and all-day parking with an additional 876 car spaces being created to total 1,955 at completion of the expansion.
