ARMSTRONG Creek is in a league of its own with the Armstrong Creek Sports Development Plan being recognised as one of the best examples of planning in Australia. The City of Greater Geelong (COGG) was recently named the winner of the Parks and Leisure Australia National Award of Excellence for Planning for their work on the sports development plan.
The awards were presented at a gala dinner in Melbourne on October 16 and councillor Jock Irvine said the plan was successful thanks to a team effort. “This award is great recognition of the hard work put in by council’s sport and recreation department, in partnership with representatives from the community and sporting bodies,” he said. “The Armstrong Creek Sports Development Plan is a comprehensive plan that takes a strategic approach to the future provision of
sport in Armstrong Creek. “It’s a great example of how we can ensure sport is delivered in a new neighbourhood right from the outset. “It also demonstrates how we can engage the local community in the establishment of sport.” The plan includes recommendations for providing sporting opportunities, addressing participation trends, barriers to participation, support structures and consultation with state and local sporting bodies.
Key recommendations include the provision of dedicated sports development staffing resources and securing partnership commitment from state sporting bodies and agencies. It also recommends the engagement and commitment of local schools in developing sport and the connection of Armstrong Creek to existing sporting systems The plan was developed in partnership with leading sporting bodies including
the Australian Football League, Football Federation Victoria, Tennis Victoria, Netball Victoria, Cricket Victoria and Vicsport. “Sport is a major part of Geelong’s culture and council is committed to supporting sports development in our community,” said Cr Irvine. “Congratulations to all involved in the delivery of this plan, it will go a long way to ensure our community’s love of sport will continue, stronger than ever, in Armstrong Creek.”
