BILLY’S BID Billy Brownless to help forge relationship between the Bellarine and Swan Hill region

TELEVISION personality and former Geelong footballer, Billy Brownless, has thrown his support – and profile – behind the Committee for Bellarine’s Bush to Bellarine initiative. Brownless said he was honoured to be ambassador for the committee and project and believed there were great benefits for both the Bellarine and Swan Hill regions. CfB chair, Graeme Smith, said Brownless’ links with Swan Hill and the Geelong-Bellarine region provided him with all the knowledge and passion to be the ambassador for the Bush to Bellarine

project. He said the project developed from the committee’s initial show of support for the Swan Hill region through its Victorian Flood Appeal fundraiser held on the Bellarine in February, which raised more than $3,500 for the Bengaroop community. Smith said Bush to Bellarine would forge an important relationship between the regions, with the Bellarine providing ongoing support for the flood-affected communities. “The restoration and revival will not be an overnight miracle and it will take years of difficult and varied challenges to get

back onto an even footing,” Smith said. “The Swan Hill-Gannawarra region is a major provider of food products to us the consumers – so it’s important we help in times of great difficulty and that we grasp the inter-relationship of food, energy and water security issues.” While usually recognised as the funny man of The Footy Show, Brownless is taking his role as an ambassador extremely seriously after experiencing first-hand the floods that devastated northern Victoria earlier this year. “I get up there whenever I can because I’m involved with the Commercial Hotel in Swan Hill. I went up there in the

summer (just after the floods) and had to detour because we were watered out,” he said. “I think its important to support the communities up there… the region’s a great provider of the food products we eat down here. “Maybe we can get people from around here to visit the Swan Hill area for their holidays and they can do the same and head down here. I don’t think they know how beautiful the Bellarine is; it’s a wellkept secret. “So let’s open the gate. I’m happy to be the one to do it and promote the Bellarine.”
