PORT SUPPORT

Organisers call on community and traders to get behind Port Produce initiative

BY ALISON MARTIN PORTARLINGTON’S healthy eating initiative, Port Produce, needs greater community and trader support to continue to grow. The farmer’s market-style project, which has been operating from Portarlington Primary School since March, is a vibrant market meeting an increasing need for fresh food, but would benefit from more traders and shoppers. With its viability now being assessed, Port Produce supporters are urging the community to consider the many benefits from fresh, locally grown produce and understand the necessity to “use it or lose it”. Bellarine farmers are also being asked to register their interest in selling produce at the Friday morning market and take the opportunity to provide goods direct to the public. Port Produce is an initiative of Bellarine

Community Health, with the support of the primary school, CJ Keane Real Estate and Portarlington’s Community Bank. BCH food security team spokesperson, Helen O’Regan, said the health organisation was currently formatting next year’s Port Produce schedule and all partners wanted it to remain. “But BCH is undertaking an intensive analysis of its social marketing and a full evaluation will paint a clear picture of what works and what needs to be re-assessed,” she said. “Port Produce was established to provide the community with quality produce at affordable prices. “We have had some traders stop coming because of personal issues and other commitments so we are looking for more local producers. “However, we also want more members of the public to come along to support the traders who are supplying fresh food at reasonable prices.

demonstrations to teach the children how to take the produce from the ground to the table. “The school has also started its own vegetable garden and there has been discussion on what students can do with the produce, because there will not be enough for every student. Some senior students suggested it be given to residents at aged care facility, Ann Nichol House, which shows they understand the importance of home-grown food. “Port Produce has also created a nice link with the community by bringing people who would otherwise have no involvement into the school.” Simons said Bellarine residents were encouraged to visit Port Produce on Friday mornings, 8.30am to 11.30am, leading up to Christmas. She said the school was also negotiating with BCH to continue the market over the holidays, providing visitors and holiday-makers with sources of fresh local produce and stall holders with new customer opportunities.

“The school has been the strength behind Port Produce and it has been a wonderful partnership but it will have to be looked at in its current form.” School principal, Denise Simons, said the market had been a success on many levels, with the food and education it had been providing, but more support was essential. “To lose Port Produce would mean losing a strong community focus, families would no longer have easy access to locally-grown food and an invaluable learning tool would be lost,” she said. Simons said school parents who shopped at Port Produce agreed the food lasted longer because it had been grown in the area, harvested and sold on Friday mornings without being stored or transported long distances. “Reducing food miles is one of the key issues and students have been able to make the link between growing and eating fresh, healthy food,” she said. “Some traders have also presented food
