SHOW SOME RESPECT
Road users asked to exercise extra care through the holidays in a bid to stop tragic and needless loss of lives on our roads
BY NATHAN HALE ROAD users throughout the Bellarine are being implored to exercise extra caution this holiday season. In the wake of two tragic accidents which have seen cyclist killed in the past month, cycling groups, politicians and police have rallied together to beg motorists to slow down and concentrate on the road as the Bellarine prepares for its annual influx of visitors. The warnings come after two incidents involving collisions between vehicles and bicycles have left two men dead. Former school teacher Ron Thompson was killed on Anglesea Road when he collided with a truck, while Geelong identity Rex Sizeland died after colliding with a car on Breamlea Road last week. Felicity Dales, from Ocean Grove cycling shop Body Torque, said more mutual respect was needed on the roads. Dales recently took part in the Amy Gillett Foundation ride, which is promoting a new campaign – A Metre Matters, encouraging motorists to give an extra metre of space when passing cyclists. “I can see how both motorists and cyclists feel, Dales said. “I was off the bike for 20 years. I used to ride, then had kids and with work I stopped riding, and as I was using the car more I started to realise just how much you need to be aware of cyclists. “And now that I have got back into riding, I can see how aware you need to be out on the bike with so much traffic around you. “In the end it comes down to
showing a bit of mutual respect to one another. “Car users might think a cyclist is taking up too much of the road, but the truth is they may be dodging a pot hole or some broken glass or an object on the side of the road. “Similarly, cyclists have to be aware of riding two and three abreast if there is a lot of traffic about.â€? Liberal candidate for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, has called for all road users to “respect the roadsâ€?. “This is a very important time to take extra care with many people often travelling long distances to see family and friends. A life can be lost in a moment‌ so slow down and drive with caution. Respecting each and every road user is critical,â€? she said. “The Bellarine and the Surf Coast are important destinations for cyclists. All road users must look out for each other. “I appeal to motorists to drive carefully and cautiously, particularly over the days ahead. Life is just so precious. Any risk is a risk not worth taking.â€? Officer in charge of Torquay Police Station, Brian McKiterick, who has overseen both tragedies, said extra care is needed on the road – especially as the summer season heads into its busiest period. “In light of the recent tragedies involving cyclists, we ask people to take extra care, particularly over this summer period when there are a lot more vehicles and bicycles on the road,â€? he said. “Traffic will dramatically increase over the coming weeks, especially on holiday weekends, and we just ask that all road users be aware.â€?
