Portarlington to receive a facelift after confirmation of state government funding

BY ALISON MARTIN MORE than $550,000 has been secured to revitalise Portarlington’s town square and streetscape, including restoration of the historic rotunda. Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville, yesterday confirmed a $250,000 state government grant for stage one of the Portarlington redevelopment. The state grant, through the Regional Development Victoria’s Small Towns Development Fund, will be boosted by a further $300,798 contribution from City of Greater Geelong. The funding to allow the project to proceed and be completed in 2010, has been applauded by the Portarlington Business Development Association (PBDA). PBDA chair, John Rae, said the streetscape design would “enhance Portarlington immensely”, and while this has been in the planning stages for many years the funding announcement would see it come to fruition. “We congratulate the state government, City Of Greater Geelong and our local councillor, John Doull, who has been working behind the scenes to ensure funding of the streetscape project,” he said. Neville agreed the town square redevelopment and streetscape project would deliver “terrific social and economic benefits to Portarlington and the surrounding region”. “It will make Portarlington a more beautiful and relaxing place to live in and visit, stimulate business activity and create employment,” she said.

City of Greater Geelong manager urban design, Felix Hemingway, said the major project would involve three stages and planning was under way. “Concept designs are currently being finalised with the consultation phase to start early next year,” he said. Stage one of the project will involve the development of a new town square around the historic rotunda and include wider pavements for alfresco street dining; landscaping with street trees and lawn; lighting and street furniture. “Stage two is the streetscape works in Newcombe Street, which will transform this central area into a vibrant and inviting place,” Hemingway said. “Under the third and final stage of the project, a pedestrian link from Pier Street to the harbour will be created. This will occur in conjunction with the Portarlington Safe Harbour Project.” Neville said once completed, the project would mean businesses would be better able to cater for the tourist season, when Portarlington’s population swells from its permanent base of 3,100 people to a peak of 15,000 over summer. “It will also cater to the growing number of people moving to Portarlington to live and who commute to work in Geelong or Melbourne,” she said. “The improved aesthetic appeal of the town will attract both visitors and residents who will enjoy a new strong central link between the shops, the parkland and Portarlington Harbour. “During the six months of construction, 10 direct and 20 indirect jobs will be created, and up to 20 ongoing jobs.”

There was no mistaking one man in the crowd at Queenscliff’s Hesse Street Christmas Festival on Friday night. Santa had the luxury of leaving his sleigh at home, with a steam train and local CFA truck waiting to transport him to the Queenscliff Post Office to collect a sack full of wish lists. The festival is in its second year, and saw the street decorated with Christmas trees, while community identities were on hand to paint the 12 days of Christmas.
