Ted Baillieu joins in praise for this week’s big flood fundraiser
BY ALISON MARTIN MESSAGES of appreciation and thanks are flowing from northern Victoria to the Bellarine in the leadup to this week’s major flood relief dinner. Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu, and Swan Hill Rural City councillor, Bill Croft, are just two of many who have come forward to acknowledge the importance and contribution of the Committee for Bellarine’s planned charity night. Fundraising efforts across the peninsula have until now been focused on supporting the immediate need and rebuilding effort required in Queensland. However, in recognising the hardship also faced by communities closer to home, the committee will host the Victorian Flood Relief Dinner this Friday night.

CfB spokesperson, Tom O’Connor, said after years of drought and now the floods, many families in northern Victorian were in need of assistance. “We are aiming to raise funds for those most in need, distinct from the Federal Government’s levy to assist infrastructure reconstruction,” he said. “The committee is also planning to offer families from the northern region the opportunity to spend time here on the Bellarine with accommodation, travel and general entertainment at no cost, to provide them with a much-needed break.” Swan Hill’s Bill Croft commended the CfB for its massive effort in supporting the communities of north-west Victoria. “In rural areas there are two elements that often threaten the lifestyle and livelihood of the residents
– and those elements are fire and flood,” he said. “In this instant it is the latter that has stretched the physical and mental abilities of our residents to the absolute limits of their endurance in both municipalities. “Out of the trauma have come some wonderful stories of absolute dedication and a work ethic that defies description.” Also praising community spirit – from those in northern Victoria to the Bellarine – Baillieu said it was important local people were given the opportunity of supporting flood victims through an event like CfB’s charity dinner. He said many people had been left with nothing in the wake of the floods. “It is at times such as this that Victorians and
Australians prove their capacity to join together and help in whatever way they can,” Baillieu said. “The Committee for Bellarine is demonstrating that capacity by organising this flood relief event that will give people of Bellarine a chance to help. “It’s a wonderful example of the spirit that will see us through this and allow communities to rebuild, and I congratulate the Committee for making this great effort to help.” Those attending the dinner will hear television identity, Rob Gell, speak on sustainability and be entertained by Dave Steel, Tiffany Eckhardt and Mischievous Thom. A three-course meal served with local wines is also included in the $95 ticket. To secure your ticket, visit www.committeeforbellarine.com.au
