New open water swim classic set to showcase the Bellarine as one of the state’s best holiday destinations

BY SARAH LAWRENCE THE BELLARINE’S standing as one of the leading holiday destinations in the state is set to be enhanced further with the introduction of a new open water swim race in March. Organisers are in the process of finalising plans for a series of swims, which they believe, in time, can grow to rival the iconic Lorne Pier to Pub event, which drew more than 20,000 people to the town on Saturday. Such events provide a massive economic boost for the towns and wider community, and organisers believe a March swim is ideal timing to bring tourists to the Bellarine.

Surf Forecast

The jewel in the crown of the open water proposal is the 9.5-kilometre swim from Portarlington to St Leonards, which will be known as the Port to Pub. The long-distance event will be the first of its kind in the bay, and is expected to draw some of the leading distance swimmers from around the state. Two secondary events will come under the banner of the Bellarine Open Water Classic, and will feature a 500-metre swim for the under 12 age group and a 1.5-kilometre swim for the open and older age groupers. The events will also be unique in that they will link open water swimming with sailing. “The aim of these events is to help our club not just financially, but serve to develop stronger

links with our local community, campers, visitors and swimmers,” said Indented Head Yacht Club commodore, John Walter. The shorter distance swims are in final stages of negotiations with the yacht club. According to Walter, the idea for the events came through discussions with well-known local swimmer and identity, Tom O’Connor, who initiated the old Geelong Open Water Swim Classic. O’Connor also has experience working on and competing in other local events, such as the Queenscliff Blue Water Classic and the Point Lonsdale Rip View Classic. O’Connor said he wanted the event to go ahead as a way to show off the positive aspects of the

Bellarine Peninsula. “The Bellarine is such a precious part of the world. We should be proud of how beautiful it is,” he said. Both Walter and O’Connor pointed out that the event will be vital in supporting local businesses and employing Bellarine locals, such as the Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club and local fishing and marine engineering groups. Details are expected to be finalised in the coming week with governing bodies Bellarine Bayside and Parks Victoria.
