GOLDEN GATEWAY
Plans for major expansion of Leopold’s Gateway Plaza could provide jobs boost for Bellarine
BY ALISON MARTIN A SUB-SHOPPING centre employing up to 1,000 local people is being planned for Leopold. City of Greater Geelong has started the planning process to enable a major expansion of Leopold’s Gateway Plaza, which could include two supermarkets, a major department store and a cinema. Plaza owner, Lascorp Development Group, envisage the centre will grow with the region and has welcomed council’s move to establish Leopold

as a sub-regional centre. Lascorp national development manager, Robert Harris, said Lascorp had always believed Leopold was the appropriate place for a major retail centre. “Really, at the moment, anyone from the Bellarine has to drive to Geelong for shopping,” he said. Harris said it was too early to reveal plans, but a sub-regional centre at Leopold was likely to be similar to the Waurn Ponds shopping centre. “Sub-regional centres generally have two supermarkets, a department store plus office space
and retail,” he said. “It would be similar to Waurn Ponds but Leopold would be better planned and we could get it right from day one rather than adding here and there. “There is also the opportunity to integrate Memorial Park into the plans for any retail development and we’re keen to expand the centre. “Once the council process moves along we can start to look at what would actually be included. “This could create 600 or 700 jobs and then more to service it. And in these sub-regional shopping
centres, 99 per cent of staff are local people.” City of Greater Geelong councillor and Leopold resident, Rod Macdonald, said as part of the planning for a major activity centre development, council was looking at Leopold’s urban design framework and how the recreation areas could be integrated with the retail centre. “In 2006, Leopold was identified as a subregional centre and this planning work carries on from that. Now we need to do the work to make it happen. It’s an exciting opportunity,” he said.
