St Leonards Yacht Club hosted the Heron Association’s 2011 National Championships last week, attracting yachtsmen, support teams and spectators from across Australia. Yacht club spokesperson, Karen Reiter said the wooden Herons were originally made to provide families with an affordable way of becoming involved in yachting. However, she said the small boats now had a strong cult following and the championship was considered a prestigious event. More than 35 boats competed over the week-long championship, with wide interest in the yachting event. See more MICHAEL CHAMBERS photos on page 11.

BY ALISON MARTIN

GET PATRIOTIC and celebrate Australia Day on the Bellarine Peninsula tomorrow. Share in one Australian’s unique Antarctic experience in Queenscliff or chip your way through the day with a VFL-AFL star at Portarlington Golf Course during the traditional family holiday. In Queenscliff, Antarctic explorer and Australia Day Ambassador, Rachael Lamont, will be celebrated as the second female to lead the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition to Davis Station. Lamont led the 58th expedition; where she faced many isolation and leadership challenges, which

she will share with Australia Day audiences at the Queenscliff Town Hall. In 2005, Lamont was seconded to the Australian Antarctic Division from her job as a senior manager at Parks Victoria. As station leader, Lamont was responsible for all aspects of life on station, from the safety and welfare of more than 80 expedition members in summer, to the delivery of the Australian Government’s $10million science programme. She will talk about what it meant to be Australian during her year based in the Antarctic and highlights of her experience during the Australia Day celebrations at the Queenscliff Town Hall. The traditional flag raising, presentation of

Australia Day Awards, family activities and a free barbecue, refreshments and birthday cake will also take place. Entertainment will be provided by Bernard, Sueanne, Tessa and William Reed, and a free native plant will be given to every family who attends the celebrations, which start at 11am. Celebrations at Portarlington Golf Club will also kick off at 11am. Portarlington Australia Day Committee organiser, Lindsay Ellis, said Portarlington’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2011 would be former VFL-AFL player and coach Robert Walls. Walls was recruited by Carlton in 1967 and kicked a goal with his first kick in the then VFL

against Hawthorn. He went on to play 218 games with Carlton, including three premierships in 1968, 1970 and 1972. Walls coached the Brisbane Bears from 19911995 and Richmond Football Club appointed him senior coach for the 1996-1997 seasons. Ellis said the traditional ceremony at Portarlington would include the raising of the Australian flag, singing the national anthem and the address by Walls as the town’s Australia Day Ambassador. “The formal proceedings will be followed by a free sausage sizzle and soft drinks, sponsored by Safeway Drysdale, and Bellarine Bayside,” he said. “Robert Walls will be in attendance and meet attendees to have a chat and answer questions.”
