Local equine owners concerned a horse trail study will indentify hurdles rather than opportunities for the Bellarine Peninsula
BY ALISON MARTIN BELLARINE horse riders are urging City of Greater Geelong to consider all the opportunities a network of horse trails – accessible to cyclists and walkers – would create for the region. Bellarine horse owner and industry spokesperson, Garry Laver, is concerned a horse trail study, which is being finalised by CoGG, identifies reasons not to create a network of trails. Laver, however, believes there are ways of addressing issues and the benefits of a trail network across the growing Bellarine will outweigh any problems raised in the study. As a cyclist and horse rider, Laver has seen the success of a series of trails created through the pristine Otways near Forrest. He said common concerns, including flora protection and weed management had been addressed and the Otway trail had created a strong demand and tourism opportunities for the area. “I’m like a lot of others on the Bellarine… I use to ride my horse on the local roads but I don’t anymore because it’s just too dangerous,” he said. “A series of trails would also provide an answer to the cycling concerns. It would separate cars and bikes and could even save lives. “Everyone who rides a bike on the roads around the Bellarine has a story of a recent accident or nearmiss to tell you.” Laver said he hoped the strategy, when released for public comment, would consider suggestions he and other local horse owners had raised. “The trail could be created by the opening of the western section of Sheppards Road to link to the Rail Trail,” he said. “There would need to be access, at least to the short section of the Bellarine Rail Trail, between the Pony Club grounds and the Sheppards Road linkage. “But the network would require an agreement between the Steam Preservation Society (SPS) and CoGG to allow this section to be used by horse riders on reasonable nominated days and during specific time periods.” Laver said the SPS currently refused to allow horses alongside the rail line, however, there were
The Bellarine’s burgeoning tourism industry travelled to Melbourne’s Federation Square on Sunday for the biggest metropolitan promotion of the region to date. The Bellarine Beach Party was an outstanding success, thanks to the efforts of local tourism operators, volunteers, tourism authorities and staff, including Jess Lewis.
