Local communities set to get behind annual Good Friday appeal

BY ALISON MARTIN THE BELLARINE’S fundraising spirit looks set to continue from floods through to the Good Friday Appeal, with Portarlington identities preparing to “keep Tirian’s treadmill turning”. Portarlington business owner, Sandy Hillman, has spent a great deal of time of the past seven years at the Royal Children’s Hospital with her son Tirian, who suffers from severe anaphylaxis, and is understandably a passionate supporter of the RCH Good Friday Appeal. Sandy, who together with her husband, Dean, owns Montanas fashion boutique, said her family had

contributed to many RCH fundraisers, particularly since Tirian was born, and this year had organised a fundraiser that would involve the whole community. Tirian has experienced a range of health issues since birth and continues to have regular contact with the RCH specialists as he deals with his lifethreatening allergies. Sandy said Tirian’s Treadmill Day, which would be held on Good Friday, had already received great support from the Portarlington community with numerous residents volunteering to keep the treadmill turning or sponsor the fundraiser. “The idea is that we will have local people on the treadmill out the front of the shop continuously from

10am to 5pm. They can either stay on the treadmill for half an hour or an hour at a time and we are encouraging everyone to come down and support them,” she said. “Local policeman, Senior Sergeant Dave O’Connor, doctor David Unkenstein, Portarlington Primary School principal, Denise Simons, local footballers and netballers, tradies and other businesses have all volunteered to get on the treadmill to raise money for the Good Friday Appeal.” Tirian’s Treadmill Day has been fully endorsed and supported by the Royal Children’s Hospital. Donations can be made in store at Montanas in Newcombe Street, Portarlington before Good Friday

or on the day. Another unique RCH Good Friday Appeal fundraiser is also being planned further around the peninsula at Queenscliff, where the main street will be closed to traffic for the inaugural Kids busking for The Kids. The community-led and Borough of Queenscliffesponsored event will feature young musicians who will perform throughout Good Friday, with all money donated to the buskers going to the RCH appeal. For more information on Tirian’s Treadmill Day contact Sandy at Montanas on 5259 1422 or for Kids busking for The Kids details turn to page 3 or phone the borough on 5258 1377.
