Opposition leader visits Bellarine to throw his support behind candidate Kurt Reiter
BY ALISON MARTIN VICTORIAN Liberal Party leader Ted Baillieu made a surprise appearance at the Bellarine Art Show on Saturday, rallying support for local candidate, Kurt Reiter. The Opposition leader arrived in St Leonards to a washed-out street festival, with torrential rain forcing the community to abandon its festivities. However, wet weather could not dampen the spirits of the Liberal faithful who were ecstatic with Baillieu’s pre-election visit and the Bellarine arts community who received a funding pledge. Reiter said Bellarine was now considered one of the Liberal Party’s “winnable seats”, with Baillieu’s appearance at St Leonards showing his interest in the Bellarine and willingness to
meet with the community. “If I win or lose, I’ve done what I set out to do and that was to make the Bellarine count,” he said. Further boosting his campaign, Reiter announced at the Bellarine Art Show opening on Friday night that the Liberals would provide a “small but important grant” for the Bellarine Art Group. “I am delighted to be able to make a commitment that a future Coalition Government will invest $3,000 in this very worthwhile local project,” he said. “The art group requires a small injection of funds to assist with art class materials so that volunteers can help painting enthusiasts get the most out of their participation.” Reiter said St Leonards Yacht Club commodore, John Royle, had been lobbying for more than five years for

this very small grant to provide basic art materials for art classes such as easels so that volunteers can help retired and other painting enthusiasts get more involved in the group. “Sometimes it only takes a small amount of money to generate a lot of good. If elected, we will provide this grant request to support this volunteer-based community initiative,” Reiter said. “I congratulate Mr Royle on his perseverance with this issue and his dedication to the Bellarine Food, Wine and Art Festival and hope to be in a position to provide better support than has been provided thus far by Labor if elected.” The show, which was held as an annual fundraiser for the St Leonards Yacht Club and Motor Squadron, was officially opened by Member for Western Region, David Koch.
