Port netballers have change rooms for the first time in history
HISTORIC CHANGE BY TIFFANY PILCHER
THE Portarlington Demons Netball Club’s 41-year facility drought has finally come to an end with the delivery of brand new change rooms on Wednesday. The $300,000 council funded change rooms are the first the club has ever had
and include toilets, a disabled toilet and change area, canteen, store room and dedicated home and away umpire rooms. The prefabricated rooms were transported by five semi-trailers and a mobile crane to the allocated space next to the disused tennis courts at the Recreation Reserve on Sproat Road.
The tennis courts will be overhauled with new all-weather surfaces and floodlights for use as netball courts. Demons head coach Kelly Ricketts said after campaigning for new facilities for years, the club was delighted to have them in place at last. “We’re really excited and this will make
a world of difference because we’ve never had change rooms or toilets, so at times it can be really difficult for everyone. “A number of the girls don’t live locally so they can’t shower after a match.” She said the new amenities will not only help existing players, but also support the long-term viability of the club. “It is bigger than just having somewhere to get changed – you have to build the club from the juniors up and if we have the proper facilities they’re likely to stick around for the long haul, and hopefully they’ll want to take on responsibilities within the club when they’re older.” Coryule ward councillor Lindsay Ellis said he was pleased to see the club take such a significant step forward and thanked them for their cooperation and support during the planning process. “They’ve been working at it so long, and the club along with parents and friends have all been patient and hugely supportive the whole time. “Player numbers are still growing, and the availability of these new changing rooms and facilities is certain to give these participation levels a further boost.”
The change rooms will be fully operational in coming weeks but not in use until two of the tennis courts are converted to Netball Victoria-compliant courts. The conversion is expected to be completed for next season.
