Neighbourhood house shows off mosaic seat
SEAT UP BY JAMES TAYLOR
ABOUT a thousand tiles and about a thousand hours of hard work have gone into an art installation now on show in Portarlington. On Wednesday, the creative minds behind the mosaic seat unveiled their work, which is located outside the Portarlington Neighbourhood House in Brown Street. Between 30-40 people contributed
to the design and construction of the colourful seat, which is decorated with images representing the many activities and groups offered by the neighbourhood house, such as card making, harmonica classes, the book club, and the film society. Work on the seat began in early February, and finished the day before Wednesday’s unveiling. Lorraine Stokes, coordinator of the neighbourhood house’s mosaic group,
said people were asked to come up with a design for the seat that was A3 or A4 in size. “We’re really impressed with the result, a lot of people had never done mosaics before. We had 15 to 16 people in the shed out the back at one point and we couldn’t cope, so a lot of people worked on their design at home. “It’s a great talking point, we’ve had international visitors taking photos.” The seat is not unlike the mosaic-
covered chairs in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. “We did look at the ones in Brunswick Street but ours has more of a story,” Ms Stokes said. Construction of the seat was supported by a $3,000 grant from the Portarlington and Drysdale Community Bank. Portarlington branch manager Ian Faulkner said he was very pleased to be able to support the neighbourhood house with a grant.
“Thanks to the people that bank with us – without their support, we wouldn’t be able to put the money back into the community.” He said the next round of community grants offered by the bank would open on July 30 and run for four weeks. “Think of your projects, we’re looking forward to seeing a lot of applications from the community. I’ve been surprised at the talent in the community – there’s been some excellent work done.”
