BARWON Heads is set to shine as it provides the backdrop for the closing of cultural, environmental and artistic pilgrimage, Mountain to Mouth (MM2014) on May 10. M-M2014 is a 24-hour extreme arts walk, beginning late afternoon on Friday May 9 at You Yangs Big Rock and finishing at dusk on the Saturday at the Barwon Heads river mouth. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register to walk one or more stages of the 80 kilometre pathway. The walk incorporates a program of music, visual arts, storytelling and sporting elements presented by local and

guest artists under the artistic direction of the internationally renowned Meme McDonald. Funds raised from M-M2014 will support the Karingal Foundation to present inclusive environmental projects along the M-M pathway. Buckley Ward councillor Andy Richards said the journey retraced the footsteps of the 2009 Mouth to Mountain. “M-M is based on a pilot journey in 2009, when water was taken from the mouth of the Barwon River and carried by community ambassadors to the top of the You Yangs. M-M2014 returns the water to the ocean.” City of Greater Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons said the M-M idea of establishing a local contemporary “songline” had been

nationally recognised for its originality. Walkers will reach the Bellarine on the Saturday with stations in Drysdale, Swan Bay, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove and finally, Barwon Heads. The Barwon Heads station will open at 4pm and walkers are expected to arrive at 5.40pm. Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove district coordinator Vicky Strachan said the walkers would be welcomed by the Barwon Heads Chorale and combined choirs and there would be a number of events and activities including a closing ceremony at the Barwon Heads jetty to conclude the marathon walk. “It will be a fire on water ceremony and we’re expecting it to be very

beautiful and simple. There will also be a twilight lantern procession from the bluff to the jetty involving a number of the town’s children. The Barwon Heads Arts Council has been very involved in organising the closing ceremony and we’ve held a number of workshops to create the artworks that will be on display throughout the walk. M-M involves so many different community members with a focus on environment, art and sport and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate what’s beautiful about Barwon Heads.” M-M will begin with an opening ceremony at Big Rock, including a Gathering of the Elders ceremony lead by Uncle Bryon Powell, elder

and chairperson of the Wadawurrung (Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation). There will also be celebrations in Geelong with the arts event, Geelong After Dark, incorporating spontaneous performances, music and art installations. In Waurn Ponds, the event coordination team will present the story behind Geelong’s extreme arts pilgrimage and songline at the Waurn Ponds Library from 6pm to 7.30pm. The walk is open to all, allowing participants to choose to walk either the full distance, or one or more stages. Individual stages vary from three kilometres to 13 kilometres.
