ultimate bbq Turn your Turbo Elite into the focal point of your outdoor room by creating your own outdoor kitchen. This is the ultimate BBQ entertaining station, with the flexibility of four burners. An independent side burner enables you to cook two very different cuisines simultaneously without the aromas of each spoiling the other. This BBQ beast has a double skinned firebox and hood and provides more than twice the insulation resulting in far more consistent temperature control and

better heat retention. The cooking surface and roasting area heat up more efficiently. This Turbo comes with two RQT Burners which are a fantastic way to cook your meat - sealing in the goodness and minimising flare ups, delivering better flavour and texture to your meal. The radiant quartz dome acts as a lens, trapping heat from the burner and magnifying it directly under the grill. Falling fats and oils vapourise or roll off the dome before they have a chance to ignite. Adjust the burner power setting to stay in control of flare, depending on the fattiness of the food you’re cooking. Add a couple of extra RQT burners to your new BBQ to extend its power and turbocharge your cooking experience! BBQs Galore, Ph 03 5241 2050 www.barbequesgalore.com.au

mirrors

Mirrors are available to suit every style and are an inexpensive way to add interest and complete your room styling.

WORDS Sue Anthony

Any room in your home can benefit from the addition of a mirror – as they not only reflect images, but light as well. Brighter rooms appear larger than they really are. Placing long mirrors in corridors or hallways adds a sense of space. Using a series of mirrors for a repetetive look adds interest. Unique mirrors also become a stunning decoration piece. A retro starburst mirror works well hung over a rustic table or a glossy modern buffet. If you want to create an opulent atmosphere you could choose an oversized wall mirror finished in gold or silver. There’s no need to put holes in your walls – a large mirror propped against a wall creates a point of interest in the room. The same principles also work with mirrored furniture – for example, mirrored bedside chests are an excellent way to make a small bedroom appear larger and brighter.

If you are unsure about wallpaper, choose a simple design and start in a bedroom or powder room. Children’s rooms are also a perfect place to begin.

If you’re not feeling very brave you could try some wall stickers in the kitchen, study or children’s rooms.

Maximise your comfort

at the touch of a button When your home is built or developed around a view, windows are always a major part of the design. It can be difficult to know how to dress these windows, so they look attractive without overwhelming the room or detracting from that view. You may

prefer to leave them exposed but often the need for privacy, glare reduction or insulation can be more of a determining factor. There are so many choices available for window dressing it can become a bit overwhelming, so seek some professional advice. Determine your priorities and look at your options – this way you will be better equipped to make an informed buying decision which will help you achieve better results. Investing in the right window coverings can make a substantial difference to the energy efficiency of your home. As so many of our homes have large areas of glass heat reduction becomes an issue as we head into Summer External shading, such an awning, is the most effective way to reduce heat, preventing the sun hitting the glass and minimising the amount of heat entering your home. Retractable awnings provide shade when you need it and can also be used to extend your outdoor living area. Available in a range of options, including fully-automated sun control at the touch of a button! Automated awnings and blinds are becoming increasingly popular – as they are so convenient Visit Brax Blinds at 332 Pakington Street Newtown, Ph 03 5221 5533 www.braxwt.com.au

These are the things to consider when planning or maintaining the space that surrounds your house. Love it or hate it, your garden is no longer an optional extra. For today’s savvy home owners, a garden has become a large aspect of any house. Modern expectations of gardens have now grown, from the very basic lawn and Hills Hoist, to now complex layers of paving, decking, walls, pools, plants, BBQs, outdoor kitchens, screenings, lighting, garden art and much more. A garden can be utilisied for entertaining and enjoying your outdoor time to the fullest. My best advice for anyone contemplating a new garden or renovating an existing garden is to do your home work, seek professional help and advice. This will result in creating an attractive feature to the home. Peter Shaw, Ocean Road Landscaping www.orl.com.au u

Spring gardening tips Gardens go berserk once the warmer weather arrives - make sure you’re prepared with these handy spring gardening tips.

EGR Water Tank

Gardeners who are well-prepared for the onset of springtime will be able to boast gardens that are in tip top shape. NURTURE YOUR SOIL - The most important step you can take to encourage a healthy spring garden is to ensure your soil is in top condition. Dig organic materials like compost and mulch through the soil, and add a high-nitrogen fertiliser like blood and bone, especially if you’re hoping to plant exotic plants. GET THE VEGIE PATCH GOING Spring is a great time to get your first crop of vegies into the garden. If you haven’t already got a vegetable patch in place, choose a spot that is sheltered from the wind and receives plenty of light. For a healthy, harvestable spring garden add some organic material to prepare the soil and then plant vegies like peas, lettuce, carrots, silver beet and beetroot. CULTIVATE YOUR LAWN - Grass is just like any other plant, and with the extra sunlight and warmer soil it will start thriving again after months of dormancy. As part of your spring garden ‘plan of attack’, plant a new lawn now, or fertilise established lawns to take advantage of the improved growing conditions. Top up hollows or uneven patches in the lawn with topsoil.

The Water Brick is the great new alternative to water storage for a changing Australian housing market. The Water Brick will fit in almost any property, has a 600 litre capacity and can be installed in a number of ways – meaning you can link several units together to maximise capacity. Bunnings Warehouse Waurn Ponds Ph 03 5244 8200

Box my garden Sustainable Australia Cypress wood Garden box with integrated metal frame provides a sturdy and attractive solution for plants requiring support and/or tasteful presentation. www.boxmygarden.com.au Ph 0448 990 018

GET RID OF PESTS - Bugs like aphids, slugs and snails adore young spring growth to munch on and they can do serious damage to your precious plants. As part of your spring gardening preparation, put down snail pellets after rain and spray infested plants with pyrethrum-based pesticides.

Warralily purchasers given a

bird’s eye view of future Warralily purchasers have the opportunity to take in a bird’s eye view of the lifestyle that awaits them thanks to complimentary helicopter rides provided by Warralily developers. Warralily General Manager Mark Whinfield said that the aerial view provides the best vantage point to see the full Warralily Estate, the progress of civil works and the close proximity to beautiful coastline and Geelong’s CBD. “For many, flying in a helicopter is something they never thought they would have the chance to do, so the whole experience adds to the excitement of purchasing their block at Warralily,” said Mr Whinfield. “Purchasers are enthused to see the progress that is being made on the Estate; it’s a perspective that is hard to get from the ground.” Warralily civil works for the first stages commenced in 2011 and are progressing well considering the amount of rain throughout the year. The targeted release of these initial titles is

in November, and commencement of building Warralily’s first homes – and Geelong’s largest Display Village – starts in the new year. “The road base and kerbs are currently in progress and we anticipate asphalting will be completed by early October, which will really signal to people that a new community is on its way.” “Add to this the anticipated sales activity as the warmer weather approaches and it’s going to be a very exciting summer at Warralily.” Sales at Warralily continue to perform well, demonstrating the keen interest in the Estate’s great location and value for money. Home sites at the recently released Warralily Promenade and Warralily Coast offer buyers even more choice

in block sizes and price points while still providing all the key hallmarks of the master planned community. Block prices start from $154,000, which includes a $5,000 landscape rebate. For more information on Warralily phone 1300 661 719 or visit www.warralily.com.au Spring 2011

WORDS David Finlayson

Cliff Blackman will be nearly 90 years old by the time he and wife Joan move into their new home at Central Walk housing estate Drysdale. They are making the move to be closer to the heart of Drysdale. “We want to be able to walk to the bus and the township itself. We want to be within walking distance of the shops, Mr Blackman said. “We are currently living in Drysdale - only one street up the road really but that’s more than half a kilometre. We are thinking of the time when I can’t drive and also downsizing, because we are finding our present place is too large for us to keep it as we like it, he said. The Blackman’s garden – with their lemon and gum trees, and Cliff’s prized pelargonium plants – will be difficult to leave. Cliff’s

pelargonium varieties l i i ti are now sought ht internationally, and he has recently completed a book manuscript on pelargonium plants, which is currently with publishers. “I’ll need to reduce plant numbers to a quantity I can handle when we move, he said. Joan said she saw the signs for the new Central Walk estate and suggested they go and have a look. “We like the idea of being close to the central area of Drysdale, Ms Blackman said. The Blackmans expect to get title to their new block early next year, with a view to building and moving to their new home later in the year. Central Walk estate spokesman Lloyd Moulton said house lots were selling well. “In the first three weeks since launching we’d sold 50 per cent of the lots released. Our average land size is just under 600 square metres, which is a big attraction to many buyers, Mr Moulton said.

Bayview on the Bellarine is offering both homebuyers and investors their chance to own a piece of the coast on the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula. Supremely positioned on Jetty Road in Drysdale, Bayview on the Bellarine presents an idyllic coastal location offering residents the opportunity to enjoy a year-long holiday, with leisure activities within easy reach and views of the bay and the You Yangs. “Living in the Bayview on the Bellarine estate will be like being on a constant holiday, National Pacific Properties general manager Steve Copland said. For the keen angler, the recently upgraded Clifton Springs Boat Ramp is a three minute drive away. “The estate’s close locality to the

bay means waters sports are within easy reach. The surfer searching for the perfect wave can cruise down to nearby Point Lonsdale or take the Surf Coast Highway to the world famous Bells Beach or Torquay. “Bayview on the Bellarine is also close to Bellarine Rail Trail, which weaves its way along the peninsula offering residents and visitors 32 kilometres of track to walk, run or cycle, Mr Copland said Bayview on the Bellarine is proving popular with stage one of the development almost sold out and under construction and stage two selling fast. Don’t miss your chance to secure your piece of the Bellarine Peninsula. Call 1300 BUY LAND (1300 289 526) or visit www.bvbellarine.com.au today.
