From their beautiful place overlooking the 13th Beach Golf Course, Deb and Rowan Kent reflect on canvases painted, times past, and the journey that took them to where they are now. This husband and wife team are the owners and visionaries behind vast Interior’s prominent position in the Greater Geelong and Surf Coast region; a position they worked towards from August 2009 before opening their doors in January 2010. The handcrafted furniture and homewares business embraces sustainability, originality and cultural designs, and is home to some genuinely inspiring values. After working in renovations and interior design in Lorne some years ago, the couple considered retiring to Queensland before hitting upon an idea to open a Vast Interior store. “We were looking for something different,” said Deb. “I was decorating a place in Rainbow Bay, near Snapper Rocks in Queensland. I was hastily trying to finish the job before heading back down (to the Surf 10
Summer 2011
Coast), and I found this beautiful mango wood table online. “I just kept buying everything from this one place. It was Vast Interior.” And that’s where it all started. Vast Interior, a national company founded in 1999 specialising in handcrafted quality timber furniture and inspired cultural designs for the home, opened its Geelong store in January 2010 on Torquay Road, Grovedale. Deb’s love of art and natural flair with design has seen her revel at Vast. “It’s so much fun, it’s really interesting and it’s just so different.” She likes to sit down with her customers and inspire them. “They can become the designer, and play a main part. It is really unique, you can choose some core products and then design and choose your own original flavours.” Deb believes coastal people to be a
different mix: not afraid to try different things and change it up a bit. She finds out what someone already has, and helps them to reinvent it. “We’re not just in the business of selling things. Geelong girls needed a break. It’s really good quality, at the right price. “The staff help design, make suggestions, go to fairs and bounce off each other. Everyone who works for us is so passionate about it.” Created by hand, eye and heart Vast’s designs are as beautiful as the environment, reflecting the variety of colour and history each piece houses. But the most laudable element of the Vast philosophy is the use of sustainable products, and the focus on philanthropy. Deb’s husband Rowan believes the beauty and success of Vast moving forward is the freedom of each owner to choose products and areas for sourcing.

s e c n e i r e p x e t s va “The point of difference was that we could bring in our own tastes and styles,” he said. “We get to work in partnership with suppliers, for product selection and design. It has given me the opportunity to travel to parts of the world I would never have gone to.” Each year he visits suppliers in India, China and Vietnam, sourcing new materials and working on new designs and concepts. Everything is reclaimed and sustainable, as the majority of pieces come from old boats, doors and decommissioned timber. “On a recent trip we were sourcing doors and timber from old buildings, and we found two decommissioned pillars from an old temple. We brought them back and will incorporate them into our store. “We’ve become very passionate about the environment and where our products are sourced from; we aim to minimise our impact.
“One of the focuses when I travel is when n I go to a factory, I make sure the workers are properly cared for, from safety to medical policies.” Rowan said he has become so connected and passionate about making a difference that he is sponsoring a young child, and fostering them through their schooling. “We also sponsor a school over there (near New Delhi, India), all the owners make a contribution to the buildings and provide medical teams in the villages.” Deb’s philosophy is that she works seven days a week. But it doesn’t feel like it. “A friend once said ‘make your vocation, n, your vacation’,” she said. “If you don’t try something, you’ll neverr know. You’ve just got to do it, we basically y risked everything, but we believed in ourselves, worked hard and it’s been an exciting challenge.”

Now that summer is just around the corner it’s time to transform your outdoor area. You’ve got the basics, but the outdoor room can still have a quick makeover. Pantone, the worldwide expert on colours, has selected honeysuckle – an uplifting, dynamic, reddish pink – as the 2011 colour of the year.
This is a perfect colour for summer outdoor entertaining: hot pink works so well with cool green. This bright burst of colour can be introduced by way of inexpensive items, brightly striped bamboo director chairs, colourful outdoor bean bags and scatter cushions that are UV-rated and mould resistant. The major fabric houses are now supplying fabulous outdoor fabrics. Mix it up with spots and stripes, plains and florals. Tables and glass are all available in this hot colour. Forget the traditional red and silver Christmas table; try honeysuckle for a bright casual Australian Christmas. Lighting is an important part of creating an out door room. Hurricanes lamps, votive candles, patio lanterns,

torches, rechargeable LED balls and cubes – pick and choose from these seasonal lighting solutions. Remember, everyone and everything looks gorgeous in candlelight. LED real wax scented candles look, feel and flicker like traditional candles but will never melt or burn away. Set the timer and forget. For those who entertain on balconies, there are amazing ‘permanent plants’. They never die, never need watering and don’t require heavy pots of soil. These plants are incredibly realistic, and UV-treated to guarantee a minimum fade-free period of three years. Bamboo, olive trees, yuccas and many more in various sizes are available for an instant care-free balcony garden.

ken’s s green thumb SUMMER GARDENING TIPS At this time of year you want to be out in the garden enjoying yourself. The last thing you want is a long to-do list cluttered with gardening tips, so we decided to boil it down to the essentials to make things as easy as possible. WATERING: Plants growing in pots, containers and hanging baskets need regular water as these can dry out in a matter of hours. Newly-planted trees and shrubs (any specimen planted within the last four to five years) and any freshly sown or planted parts of your garden should be targeted, as should herbaceous perennials which can suffer during sustained dry spells. Leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach should never be allowed to dry out.

Lawns can swallow up prodigious amounts of water, so unless you have a high quality lawn you should resolve to reduce or stop watering altogether. Instead, make sure that your lawn has been fed, and mow it less often with the blades on a higher setting during dry periods. WEEDING: Remember the saying ‘a stitch in time saves nine’? Take the trouble now to remove any weeds that are ready to seed – weeding before the seed heads develop will save you any amount of work in the future. The best time to do it is just after light rainfall when the weeds can be pulled out very easily. Weeding is particularly important in the kitchen garden, as any weeds will compete with your crops for essential moisture and nutrients. FEEDING: Plants in pots, containers and hanging baskets will suffer if you don’t supplement the nutrients in the compost throughout the growing season. Incorporate a slow release fertiliser at planting time or use a water soluble feed every seven to 10 days through the summer. Use a high nitrogen feed until midsummer, then switch to a high potassium feed, such as one of the liquid tomato feeds. If you prepared the ground well before planting, most vegetables won’t need any additional feeding. The main exceptions are fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers and aubergines which definitely need extra feeding – following the instructions on the product – in order to crop well.

Stars in their eyes Home-buyers looking for energy efficient buildings to live in could be excused for being confused by the stars in their eyes during the search. However, they should not be put off when trying to understand what the star rating system represents: it is quite simple. Zero stars means the building shell does practically nothing to reduce the discomfort of hot or cold weather. A five star rating indicates good – but not outstanding – thermal performance, whilst occupants of a 10 star home are unlikely to need any artificial cooling or heating. After July 2005, new houses and apartments in Victoria had to be built to meet the energy efficiency and water management requirements of the 5 Star standard. As of May 1 this year all new homes, renovations, alterations and additions have to comply with a 6 star standard, bringing Victoria in line with national energy efficiency measures. The 6 Star standard applies to the
thermal performance of a home, renovation or addition, plus the installation of a solar hot water system or a rainwater tank for toilet flushing. Some simple building work which does not require a building permit, will not be affected by the new regulations. However, all new homes and building projects involving home extensions and major renovations, will need to comply. Meeting six star compliance isn’t difficult, it’s about good design – particularly at the planning stages. Even your home’s orientation can add up to 1 Star to the rating. Six star homes are projected to use 24 per cent less energy through heating and cooling compared to five star homes. This will see Victorians saving a further $100 off their yearly energy bills. This is only an average saving: residents who use their energy features in their home wisely will save even more. If you are intending to build, renovate or extend your home or relocate an existing home, the building designer will be able to advise you on how to achieve this. Ask your builder for design options that go beyond minimum regulatory requirements: it pays in the long run.
Panaria’s Zero.3 Series tiles are lightweight yet strong, making them ideal for floors and walls, inside and out.
Panaria’s Zero.3 Series: the thin tile revolution is here The Zero.3 Series from Panaria features Italian-made, slim-line tiles in large formats, taking tiles to a whole new level of possibilities. Slim and lightweight yet strong and durable, Zero.3 tiles are available in three thicknesses to suit your application: 3mm for walls, 3.5mm for floors and 7mm for commercial floors. Available in five colours, with stunning wall feature tiles also available. Zero.3 is the perfect solution for today’s contemporary designers and architects.
These slim-line tiles can be easily tiled directly over existing floors and walls or installed on new slabs. They are lighter to handle, and their weight makes them a great alternative for internal wall linings, which is important on load bearing walls. Their environmental benefits include reduced carbon dioxide emissions due to reductions in raw materials required, unlike natural timber. For more information on slim tiles, contact Tile Boutique. Buying a block My Coastal Home recently caught up with Rohan from GJ Gardner Homes about purchasing a block of land, with some interesting conclusions.
This photo is deceptive, as the lot is only 238m2 and has a 1.5m fall across the land.
When a client is looking to purchase a block of land, there are a number of things we need to find out. Firstly we would find out for what purpose the land is being purchased: our advice all depends on the project the client has in mind. For example, are they building an investment property, a retirement home, building for the first time, or a couple looking to start a family in a new home? Once we have established what the need of the land is for, we would advise the client to consider a number of factors.
Which suburb suits their lifestyle? Do they have children and, if so, are there child care facilities, preschools and schools available? Is it important to be close to the CBD? Will they need to commute to work? Is it important to be close to the beaches? What surroundings are important? For instance, parks, bays, beaches, rail trails, walking paths, gyms, shopping centres, sporting facilities and the like. Are they going to be restricted by developer covenants and guidelines when designing their home? If it’s an investment property,
Only in Frencham Frencham Cypress are exclusive suppliers of an innovative cladding system for both interior and exterior applications. Called designAclad®, the cladding is available in a range of widths, with a choice of a sawn or dressed face,

is the area suitable for yearround rental return?
ill the rental return W validate the investment? Once the client has decided which suburb they want to live in, their choice of land should be based on certain details. Budget. It is vital to pick a suitable and affordable block that won’t leave them with nothing to spend on building their new home. Take into account the orientation. The orientation of the land and development is important to consider for north facing living areas and energy efficiency.
One of the most important things to consider is the potential site issues. There is nothing worse than having a budget in mind for a project only to find out that to build the home is going to cost a fortune in site costs. The size of the land needs to suit the house design they have in mind. Setbacks, easements and/or covenants can potentially impact on house size and design. If you are looking at purchasing land and need advice contact GJ Gardner on 5221 1447 or www.gjgardner.com.au.

coastal pools & spas
Life’s a pool Holidays at home have become the new trend. Enjoy the privacy and convenience of relaxing in your own backyard tropical oasis. A swimming pool or spa can bring family and friends together in a safe, fun environment. Parents have total supervision over their children, and can nurture a love of water in their youngsters without having to worry about turbulent surf or crowded public pools. Pool owners also have control over the quality of the water – and because it’s free from harmful bacteria, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re swimming in a crystal clear pool. Significant developments have been made within the swimming pool industry in the last 5-10 years. New eco-friendly, energy efficient and time-saving products allow more time to enjoy your pool and are better

for the environment. You can now remotely operate your pool from your smartphone – turning on pumps, filters, lights, spa jets and managing temperature control. There are also many sanitisation options to keep the water in your pool clean including a relatively new option on the market called Magnapool, which delivers a healthier, more environmentally friendly alternative to a traditional chlorinated pool. Magnapool is mineral based, and the magnesium mineral in the water works as a natural clarifier and anti-bacterial so the need for a sanitiser is reduced. It leaves water which is gentle and therapeutic on sensitive skin. There are many construction options to consider when building a swimming pool. Whether you opt for an in-ground fibreglass or concrete pool, or an above ground pool, all come with their own benefits and varying costs and construction times. Before purchasing a pool it is important that you check with your
chosen company that they are registered builders, have the relevant licence and insurance and are a member of the Swimming Pool and Spa Association. For more information phone Narellan Pools on 5223 3016 or visit www. narellanpools.com.au.
Resort living at ho where you live allo me… a swimming pool or sp a “holidaying at ho ws you to join the new trend of me”.
A Water Neutral Pool creates a new standard for swimming pools by utilising both water saving and water harvesting devices to minimising mains water use. The Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) is a voluntary, selfassessing and self-regulating, non-profit trade association for the swimming pool and spa industry. SPASA is keen to commend pool owners who conserve water and install a Water Neutral Pool – or retrofit an existing pool – to ensure that it meets this new standard. The Water Neutral Pool program has been designed using Bureau of Meteorology rainfall figures and evaporation rates to assess the
effectiveness of a range of water-saving devices and techniques. A Water Neutral Pool must – at a minimum – have a water tank, to collect rainfall to top-up the pool as needed; a pool cover to conserve 90 per cent of water lost through evaporation; and a backwash minimisation system to prevent excessive backwashing (for example, a cartridge filter, oversized sand filter, centrifugal/pre-filter device, backwash recycle system). Analysis shows a Water Neutral Pool can save thousands of litres of water every year. Over a 12-month period, pool owners with an adequate sized rainwater tank, who conscientiously use a pool
blanket (physical or chemical) and a backwash minimisation system, will not need to use mains water to top up their pool. This has been tested using two scenarios: average rainfall in Melbourne over a 30 year period (1971–2000) and average rainfall in the past 10 years (1997-2007), which has been affected by climate change and drought. The results show for both examples there is excess water in the rainwater tank that can be used for other purposes around the home over the 12 month period. made easy Saving energy and the money spent on it has been featured in the media for the past few years, so it’s no wonder a local company who specialises in clean energy has been attracting interest. Clean Energy Systems has been providing energy solutions to Geelong and the surrounding areas for two years, with solar panels and LED lighting key tools in reducing energy use. Although we are used to seeing regular breakthroughs in technology, only very occasionally do those advances make a truly great impact on our everyday lives, LED Lighting is one of those rarities. Adam Dragic, chief executive officer of Clean Energy Systems, said LED lighting is still the most untapped avenue to reduce your carbon footprint and
decrease electricity bills: LED lighting will save between 64 per cent and 88 per cent on lighting electricity costs. “LED has the most significant reduction in your energy output compared to the financial outlay,” he said. “Businesses can expect to have the total cost of an LED full fit-out throughout their office or warehouse paid back to them by the savings on their energy bill within 12-18 months.” What once was a novelty has now become a key industry with millions of dollars invested in research and design. Most top-tier LED lamps now have a three year replacement guarantee and are designed to last up to 50,000 hours or 20 years. By comparison, traditional halogen lights have no replacement guarantee and last around 2,000 hours. LED lighting is also safer than traditional bulbs as there are no hazardous substances – no lead, no argon, no mercury, no gas emission. LEDs are not hot to touch, do not flicker
and are 100 per cent recyclable. Replacement of your current lights to LED isn’t as straightforward as some would think. Industry experience has shown that if you don’t get a qualified assessor to provide you with an accurate replacement guide then mistakes can
be made which result in not getting the full reduction in energy savings, as well as blown bulbs and incorrect ambience throughout your property. For more information, contact Clean Energy Group on 1300 934 520 or visit www.cleanenergygroup.com.au

Beautiful parks
and fibre optics Curlewis Parks, an inspiring new residential subdivision located on Jetty Road in Drysdale, have recently revealed their detailed landscape plans for each of the three multi-million dollar parks that form the centerpiece of the estate. Designed by Scott Munro of Infinity Landscape Architects, the distinctive parks and gardens feature large-scale urban artworks, extensive plantings of native trees and hectares of naturally landscaped areas of green open space for healthy outdoor living. A key feature of the park designs is the large-scale urban artworks and interpretive signs that Scott has integrated within the parkland spaces. Representative of his interest in the cultural practices of Drysdale’s earliest inhabitants, these artworks take inspiration from Aboriginal creation
stories which describe how the land, animals, plants and people were all the work of a great ancestor spirit known as Bunjii – the wedge-tail eagle who is said to still look over us today. “Not only do these artworks provide a unique artistic feature for the parks, they also provide a wonderful educative insight into early Australian culture,” said Rod Anderson, of RPM Real Estate Group. Another important development for Curlewis Parks is the announcement that every home within the estate will have the opportunity to connect to an advanced fibre-to-the-home network, which offers high speed broadband internet. With recent reports suggesting that the National Broadband Network is unlikely to be rolled out in the region until 2014, this is an important initiative by Curlewis Parks as residents will not have to wait to access Australia’s fastest broadband. This opens up new work, entertainment and educational opportunities.
Beautiful parks and gardens and access to high speed broadband are just a couple of the attractions for buyers at Curlewis Park.
In addition to high speed broadband and beautiful parks, purchasers are attracted by Curlewis Parks’ investment and capital growth potential – as well as the wonderful lifestyle opportunities, with some of the best ocean and bay beaches, vineyards, golf courses, schools, shopping centres, and the established community of Drysdale at the estate’s doorstep. First things
first BY PETER SHAW
When walking through any new suburb these days it’s easy to tell who cares about their gardens. A quick glance around the street will soon show you who has put some effort in and taken the time to consider the presentation of their house. A well-built garden will bring its owners lots of pleasure. This pleasure has the bonus of being shared with the neighbourhood as well. Collectively, if people in a neighbourhood care about their gardens and maintain them well it adds value and amenity to the street, ultimately making it a better place to live and possibly improving property values as well. As a landscape professional, I always recommend that people first think about the design of the garden. Seeking a professional company, designer or landscape architect to

design the garden is money well spent. The right plant selection and location will ensure a good foundation is laid making the garden a pleasure to work in and maintain. Some considerations when designing a garden include screening, filtering views, borrowed views, driveway and pedestrian access, fences and gates, pets and children, shade and shelter, outdoor entertainment, bin storage, clotheslines and firewood, north facing sun, lighting and sculpture. With so many factors to consider, it is a good idea to write a list to take to your designer. Start by thinking through your
day to day use and how you move through the garden. Think about how you arrive home and how you arrive at the front door. Think about how you use the backyard and who uses the space. Consider the neighbourhood and the surrounding houses. All in all remember your garden is a very individual thing – it’s yours, and you should place your handprint on it with the assistance of your landscape professional. To have a truly beautiful and individual garden you will need to think outside the square. For more information, call Ocean Road Landscaping on 1300 61 62 63 or visit www.orl.com.au.

Warralily for work
rest and play Residents at Warralily will be among the first in the Geelong region to gain access to the lifestyle benefits of the underground high speed broadband network.
Notes from the underground: some of Warralily’s real story is being hidden underground with the installation of fibre optic cable.
According to Mark Keil, a US expert visiting Geelong for the recent Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia (SEGRA) conference, technology is set to change the way people live. Attendees at the regional growth conference heard how one US city turned its economy and its city around using high speed internet technology. Mr Keil, the award-winning chief information officer of the City of Chattanooga, told conference attendees how the introduction of high speed broadband services to his city changed things overnight. His most important advice for the introduction of broadband was to start thinking about the possibilities of high speed broadband before it is available so residents can start taking advantage of it as soon as it is rolled out. “We had one network of 60 doctors and radiologists who were ready to go as soon as the network was switched on and it changed the way they worked overnight. High speed broadband (also) meant that we had people who could run three or four businesses from home. “It gives you the freedom to live where you want to live and work where you want to work.” Warralily residents will be able to tap
into these benefits earlier than most, as the Warralily Estate will already have optical fibre laid throughout the developments. Residents will also have a whole new range of entertainment options thanks to the optic fibre networks being installed across the Warralily developments. Warralily general manager for development Mark Whinfield said that while it might be too early to start comparing Chattanooga to Armstrong Creek, Warralily will be ahead of the pack in providing the high speed broadband infrastructure that had seen Chattanooga win a range of awards. “Warralily will be the first to welcome new residents into Armstrong Creek and we will be future ready with high speed broadband infrastructure.”

and further
According to Bayview on the Bellarine’s sales consultant Alice Spurr, it is an estate proving very popular among home buyers and investors alike. “Stage one of Bayview on the Bellarine has nearly completely sold out and stage two is selling fast. A huge attraction is its inclusion of a shopping precinct and landscaped parks and open spaces within the development, offering peace of mind to home buyers wanting convenient facilities within reach. “Its location, too, is an obvious draw card, with the foreshore and boating facilities only two kilometres down the road and a ton of other leisure activities on your doorstep.” Bayview on the Bellarine recently ran a street-naming competition where entrants picked a street name within the development that suited its local surroundings. “The competition was hugely successful and we are pleased to announce the winning entry is ‘You Yangs Street’,” Ms Spurr said. Bayview on the Bellarine has lots to suit all budgets in a variety of sizes – and first home owners could be eligible for a grant of up to $26,500. Stockdale & Leggo Portarlington branch manager Susan Doubleday says she and the team were delighted to be chosen as selling agents for Secret by the Bay. She said that since the launch in August, the branch have enjoyed constant enquiries and were absolutely delighted by the number of allotments already sold. There are 37 allotments in stage one with further stages to be released in the future. Secret by the Bay has set the benchmark in terms of building design guidelines – easy

The St Leonards Pub. We have a counter lunch there, but can’t wait to try the Port Golf Club.
We love‌. The peacefulness of Indented Head compared to other areas. It’s a great base for us to be near the beach and then do some travel.

Stony beauty
naturally pleasing Natural stone is one of the most common materials used for both indoor and outdoor ooring. Stone provides the elegance that makes an area stand out. It often improves with age and adds character through its natural variation. It is also generally hardwearing and gains its own patina over time. Natural stone tiles have the ability to blend into their environment, complementing other building materials such as timber, steel, block and brick –
making it ideal to use in any concept. Every natural stone tile is unique, and has an individual characteristic which cannot be re-created by man-made materials. It is aesthetically pleasing and provides a sophisticated and timeless presentation, particularly around your pool or outdoor area. Natural Stone Pavers will provide you with the best of what nature can offer for your home, along with a guarantee to last you a lifetime. Visit Better Bricks & Paving Ph: 5264 1797 www.betterbricks.com.au.
Natural stone is aesthetically pleasing and, as shown here, allows for a sophisticated and timeless presentation of a pool or outdoor area.
Modern awnings cut up to 90 per cent of the suns rays without reducing light or views.
Stay cool this summer
this summer... With the days starting to heat up, it’s time to think about what you can do to keep your home or office cooler and more comfortable. External awnings are the most effective way of preventing heat gain – stopping the sun before it hits the glass, reducing your cooling costs as well as protecting your furnishings from harmful UV rays. Retractable awnings offer flexibility and control over the amount of sun. During summer, extend the awnings to protect your home from the sun; in winter, the awnings can be retracted to allow the sun in. There are so many awning options
available today – with contemporary styles to suit modern homes and coastal conditions. You don’t have to sit in the dark to stay cool: some awnings cut up to 90 per cent of the sun’s rays without cutting the light or your view. Many awnings are available with a motorisation option, allowing ease of use and maximum insulation benefits. External awnings can help keep your home cooler by keeping out up to 80 per cent of heat.

M att Scarlett
AT HOME WITH
Geelong Football Club fullback, three-time premiership player, and six-time All Australian Matt Scarlett sat down with My Coastal Home to tell us what is special about where he lives.
PROFILE because he was quick, strong and always kicked straight after he had taken a mark.
Born Highton, Geelong, 1979
Favourite dish
Resides In Torquay with my wife Milla, four-yearold daughter Charlie, six-month old twin sons Harry and Oliver, and dogs Collie and Simba. We love the coastal lifestyle and it’s a great place to bring up a family.
Debut game Against Essendon in Round 22, 1998. I barracked for the Bombers as a kid. We won by 10 points and knocked them out of the finals race.
Toughest opponent Matthew Lloyd was very difficult to play on
I don’t cook at all but Milla cooks an amazing apricot chicken. If I need to get a meal I’ll order takeaway.
Favourite holiday destination I’ve been to New York five times and love the city for its diversity. I also really like Hamilton Island – Milla and I got married there four years ago, so it’s provided some great memories for us.
What are you wearing?
FIVE FAVOURITE HOUSE ITEMS:

3
MET PITTSBURGH STEELERS HELMET
I love American football and in 2009 Jimmy Bartel, Gaz Ablett (junior) and I went to the Superbowl to see Pittsburgh play Arizona. I barrack for Pittsburgh and (fomer teammate) Benny Graham was Arizona’s punter, so we arrived a few days before the game and I was lucky enough to get all the players to sign the helmet. I still keep in touch with Benny, but it’s hard to catch up when he’s living on the other side of the world.
WORDS: LUKE GRIFFITHS PICTURES: MICHAEL CHA MBERS
I love wearing Rip Curl because it’s always comfortable and relaxed.

AFL PREMIERSHIP MEDALS All
three medals mean so much to me because they’re so hard to get. But if I had to choose one I would probably say the 2011 medal because a lot of people had written us off in the pre-season – too old, too slow. We all worked so bloody hard for that medal.
FAMILY PHOTO ALBUMS
I don’t have a favourite photo because I love all of them. Family means the world to me. When I found out that we were having twins I was in a bit of shock, but not long after we knew they were boys and I was over the moon. Of course, I’ll support Harry and Oliver in whatever they want to do, but I won’t lie, it would be nice to see them wear the blue and white hoops one day. The tattoos are a recent addition. I went into Geelong a few weeks ago with Boris (Corey Enright) and ended up getting “Oliver” and “Harry” on each wrist.
4
BAR AND DART BOARD It’s really nice to be able to sit back with mates and enjoy each other’s company. I’m the undisputed darts champion, despite what the other boys say. My favourite drinks are Corona or vodka. I don’t drink alcohol during the season; I did when I first started but it’s way too professional now. I actually don’t socialise much at all during footy season, so when we achieve success at the business end of the season, it makes the sacrifices all the more worthwhile.
5
BEDROOM This is where I chill out and relax. When the kids aren’t
jumping all over me I’ll throw on a DVD or watch some Foxtel. I don’t have a favourite show – as long as it’s sport related, I’m happy. Quiet time is important as part of my recovery and it gives me time to reflect on football, family and life in general. 38
