State government provides $750,000 lifeline to secure redevelopment of facilities at Torquay’s Fisherman’s Beach
BY NATHAN HALE
TORQUAY’S on-again off-again Fisherman’s Beach redevelopment is on again following a $750,000 cash injection from the state government. The multi-million dollar redevelopment of Fisherman’s Beach – which includes a new restaurant and kiosk as well as upgraded facilities for the Torquay Angling Club and Torquay Marine and Rescue Service – was put on hold in October following cash problems. Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC), who manages the crown land and will co-ordinate the project, was forced to lobby the state government

after a shortfall placed the redevelopment in jeopardy. In what is a double-boost for GORCC, State Member for South Barwon, Michael Crutchfield, also announced yesterday the government would contribute $750,000 to upgrade power facilities at the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park. “The government has committed $750,000 to stage one of each project to ensure the upgrades are in place by 2011,” Crutchfield said. “Recreation and tourism opportunities are vital to the Surf Coast’s economy and employment, which is why the government has committed $1.5million to these vital Torquay projects. “The redevelopment of Fisherman’s Beach will
replace existing facilities at the site which are inadequate and in relatively poor condition, and which lack good public facilities. “I want to ensure that we have the best possible facilities available for the Torquay community and for those tourists who visit our beautiful region. “As a regular user of these facilities I am well aware of the importance of the upgrades and redevelopment.” GORCC chief executive officer, David Clarke, said the funding was an ideal Christmas present – and ensured the organisation would continue to provide top-class facilities for community use. “The state government funding allocation of
$1.5million, Surf Coast Shire’s $250,000 and GORCC funding will ensure these initial stages of the redevelopment and caravan park upgrade are in place by 2010/2011 summer period,” he said. “Designs and planning permits are in place and we hope to start works early next year. “Torquay and the Surf Coast have a long history of recreation, which continues to grow with the growth in residential population, tourism visitation and recreational fishing. “Torquay is an identified growth corridor with a growing sea change population and a tourist mecca with an urgent need to upgrade existing facilities at this important location.”
