Organisers eagerly await council decision as to whether Torquay will be granted a permit to conduct a trial outdoor cinema next month

BY NATHAN HALE TORQUAY is on the verge of getting an open air cinema next month. Although Surf Coast Shire is yet to issue permits for the open air cinema, meetings last week between council and event organiser, Stardomz Outdoor Digital Cinemas, indicate there is a strong chance a test run will be held. The Spring Creek Reserve football ground has been earmarked for the event – which has tentatively been pencilled in for the weekend before Australia Day. Gary Patterson, who runs Stardomz, said the idea of an outdoor cinema is something he has been pursuing for five years. However, after the meeting with council, Patterson is hopeful all permits will be approved and he will be finally able to provide Torquay and the Surf Coast with an alternative family entertainment option at night. “This is a great opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a night out,” Patterson said. “We don’t have any permission to run the event as yet but I am hoping everything can be sorted out and we can bring this to the Surf Coast.” The test event was originally being proposed for the weekend of January 15-16-17, however an evening function already booked at the looks like forcing the change of dates. If this does occur, Patterson is hoping the event could be stretched to four days, running all the way through from Friday, January 22 to Australia Day eve (Monday, January 25). “It would be great to be able to bring something like the movie, Australia – which a lot of people would not have seen – down here for the Australia Day

‘long weekend’,” Patterson said. “There would already be a lot of people in town, and a lot of people will take the Monday off before Australia Day to make it a long weekend. “This is a great chance to bring even more business to the Surf Coast Shire. There is a fairly significant economic impact for the shire and I think it would be great.” It is understood certain conditions would been placed on the running of any event, including the shire capping numbers at 1,000 per night and that the screening and event be finished by 11pm. The running of Australia, however, which is more than two hours in length, would not be possible under those guidelines, as the screenings cannot commence until it is dark enough. “We could look at maybe pushing the time back to 11.30pm – but that is up to council if we get that far,” Patterson said. “We would not be breaking any law by extending into the evening; it is just up to the shire to see if the running of a film like Australia would be appropriate. “But we have to remember that nothing has been allowed yet, so we just need to get things approved first.” Outdoor cinemas have proven a major hit in Melbourne and Sydney, where thousands of people turn out for regular screenings. The screen proposed for the Torquay event is the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, measuring a massive 30 metres wide and 18 metres tall, which is inflatable, and can be erected in just 45 minutes.
