TORQUAY’s proposed sporting pavilion at the new civic and community precinct will now include a second storey, thanks to a $600,000 State Government boost. Premier John Brumby arrived at the precinct worksite in Torquay on Friday to announce the funding, which is in addition to earlierstate funding secured prior the project starting. Brumby said the $600,000 in funding would provide a much improved space for the community to gather, learn and socialise.
“Torquay is a great place to live and raise a family, which is why we are making this investment to support the growing community, he said. “We know that this is an increasingly popular place for young Victorians with many young families calling the Surf Coast home. “The Torquay Community Hub project is a strong example of how our government is working shoulder to shoulder with regional communities to drive economic growth and job and lifestyle opportunities, Brumby said. Member for South Barwon Michael Crutchfield said the opportunity to expand the civic and

community hub facilities was an example of all levels of government working together to provide the facilities the community needs now and into the future. “Strong families need strong communities which is why the State Government has partnered with the Surf Coast Shire and the Federal Government on this $4 million project, Crutchfield said. “This contribution from the Victorian Government’s Community Support Fund will benefit the increasing number of people from across the Torquay region joining sporting clubs and playing on these fields, he said.

Torquay’s civic and community precinct project is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. A Surf Coast Shire spokesperson said a second storey on the pavilion was allowed for in the design of the building but had not been funded as part of Stage One. He said the second level would significantly expand the capacity of the new sporting facility and enable it to become a more versatile community building – much sooner than expected. “It will also broaden the community use of the pavilion when it is completed.
