RIDE FOR LIFE Battle with cancer cannot stem Torquay woman’s adventurous streak as she prepares to set off around Australia

BY NATHAN HALE

TORQUAY’S Penny Holyoak is set to embark on the adventure of a lifetime as she continues the toughest battle of her life. Holyoak, who was diagnosed with cancer in March last year – just two months after moving to Torquay to enjoy life by the beach – is about to ride a motorbike 21,000 kilometres around Australia. The trip will take three months to complete and will be used to raise money and awareness of the Quest for Life Foundation, whose programmes address the challenges of cancer, grief, depression or other trauma and provide practical self-help strategies for increasing peace, healing and wellbeing.

Holyoak, who only last Friday finished her last dose of chemotherapy, is looking forward to the adventure, which she will undertake with her trusty canine companion, Jack, and good friend, Jude Ricardo, from Anglesea. “Late last March I was diagnosed and I had bowel surgery on Easter Monday and spent the next two weeks in hospital,â€? Holyoak said. “They then found two more tumours and then I came down here to Torquay for a couple of months to recover. “I then had another scan and it showed that the cancer had started to grow again, so I started chemo. “It all came as a huge shock as I had only just moved down to Torquay and was looking forward to life by the beach‌ I had only been down here for two months when I was diagnosed.

“Since then I have spent a lot of time in Melbourne because of the amount of chemo I have had. Holyoak was originally given just two or three months to live when she was diagnosed, and when she started chemotherapy, doctors extended that to two years. With almost 12 months gone, she is keen to make the most of her life – no matter how long remains – and she maintains a positive outlook on life. “I have always been a real adventurer, Holyoak said. “Whether it be motorbikes, jet skis, boogie boards or surfing. “It drives me mad to sit around and do nothing. So when I was having chemo I thought I would like to go on holiday, so why not go around Australia. “I started thinking about a few things and thought

that if I can make this a ride for awareness it would be fantastic. Holyoak has also launched a website – called Pen’s courage to change – which tracks her campaign and looks to inspire others to make a difference, no matter how dire their situation may seem. Holyoak is also encouraging anyone who wants to join in on any stages of the trip around Australia, to make contact through the website. “We have some girls doing the Tasmania leg with us and really, any motorbike riders around the country are invited to join us for any part of the ride they wish, she said. The ride sets off at midday from Harley Heaven in A’Beckett Street, Melbourne, on Saturday. For more information or to donate money, visit www.penscouragetochange.com.au
