Archer to star in Torquay FORMER North Melbourne star, Glenn Archer, is coming to Torquay this month to host a fundraiser for the Surf Coast Veterans Centre. Archer will host the afternoon at the Torquay Bowls Club on Monday, January 24, which is being billed as ‘an afternoon with Glenn Archer and friends’. The fundraiser will run from 4pm-7pm providing people with the opportunity to play barefoot bowls, enjoy a sausage sizzle, listen to stories of the funnier side of sport and take part in an auction of sporting memorabilia. The Surf Coast Veterans Centre helps ex-service people and war widows throughout the region. Tickets are $30 for adults and children under 12 are admitted free. And you’ll get the benefit of the work and costs in setting the shop up. “I wish I could continue but unfortunately for me it is now someone else’s turn. A TORQUAY man is offering his sports business for sale – for free. Former Collingwood footballer, David Miers, said there are no strings attached – what you see is what you get. Miers, who runs the store from Torquay’s Baines Crescent, said after nine months of establishing the business, he is prepared to “give it away to a good home”. “It is a more than viable business for anyone who wants it,” Miers said. While many might think Miers is bailing out from a business that is struggling, he said that could not be further from the truth.
The only dedicated sports store in Torquay, the business has a strong base according to Miers, but the problem has been in a lack of stock. “When I originally started the business I had a partner who was unable to fulfill their obligations in the partnership, leaving me to carry the burden,” he said. “After the set up expenses I have only been able to carry about $15,000 worth of stock – and any experienced retailer knows that is far too small an amount. “Business has been going really well in terms of people coming in and sales – and with the football and netball season around the corner, that is when things get even busier. “But the problem with the reduced stock is
