Motorists warned to obey road rules over the Australia Day break or risk paying the penalty

BY NATHAN HALE SURF Coast Traffic Management Unit boss, Jason Van Doren, has sent a warning to all motorists this Australia Day weekend – break the law and you will pay the penalty. Fed up with some motorists continuing to break the law and put other road users at risk, Van Doren has instructed his unit to crack down on all illegal behaviour behind the wheel. “People can use this as a warning – we will be out in force – not only on Australia Day, but also in the days leading up to it as a lot of people will have a four-day weekend,” Van Doren said. “That means anyone who is going to flout any road rules – from using mobile phones, to speeding, to not wearing seatbelts and even unroadworthy vehicles – is going be targeted.” Van Doren’s stern message comes just days after a head-on collision in Bellbrae last Friday that left a man with serious injuries. It is believed a silver Honda sedan travelling north on Anglesea Road and a green Magna sedan travelling in the opposite direction collided around 4.15pm, leaving three people hospitalised. This crash, along with a disappointing New Year period – which saw 12 drink drivers booked in two

days – is behind Van Doren’s blitz. “What was most astonishing was the age of the drivers caught exceeding the alcohol limit,” Van Doren said. “Almost all were probationary drivers. We even had a learner detected with a reading of .131 per cent. “It is very disappointing that the generation that grew up with TAC ads forced down their throats has dropped the ball and thinks that by being in holiday mode they can put other road users at risk. “One ‘P’ plate driver on New Year’s day was caught twice within two hours in the Torquay area, returning results of .049 per cent and then .020 per cent. In all, the Surf Coast traffic management unit handed out 92 penalty or defect notices, or other charges, during the two-day New Year period, despite repeated warnings police would be out in force. Van Doren said that during the period from December 18 to January 3, Surf Coast units had conducted 5,392 preliminary breath tests, and from those test 18 drink drivers were caught. “As we prepare for another busy period, it is vital people take notice of these warnings,” Van Doren said. “People need to take plenty of breaks, don’t take risks and leave yourself plenty of time to get to and from your destination… it’s better to be late that not arrive at all.”

Jason Van Doren is set to lead a police blitz this weekend.
