Melbourne-based company eyes Lorne Pier for exciting green technology energy trial

BY NATHAN HALE

THE SURF Coast is set to play an integral part in groundbreaking green technology which could ultimately supply more than one third of Australia’s energy needs. Lorne Pier has been earmarked as the trial ground for Melbourne-based company, AquaGen, to test its SurgeDrive technology. SurgeDrive works by harnessing waves to generate power. A floating device is placed in the water, where non-breaking waves will cause it to move in a circular path – thus generating power. AquaGen’s Nick Boyd said the concept has been successful in smaller scale trials, and the company is now awaiting approval from the Department

of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) before launching the Lorne Pier trial. The pier trial will involve the testing of the SurgeDrive technology in a bid to generate enough energy to power all electrical needs of the pier. “We have done a lot of testing and this is a proven concept in model testing. Now it is only a matter of scaling it up,” Boyd said. “We are from an engineering background, so we are of the ‘Let’s make sure it works before investing time and money’ belief. “This is an exciting technology and if we are given permission to use it I am confident it will work and be able to power the Lorne Pier.” DSE is expected to make its decision within the next four weeks, but Boyd has continued to

campaign the system, having spoken with Surf Coast councillor, Dean Webster, to garner support. Boyd was also a guest at the Surf Coast Energy Group’s recent public forum at Anglesea. “As a supporter of alternative energy, I congratulate AquaGen’s Nick Boyd and Martin Buden for pioneering wave energy technology in the Surf Coast and initiating a trial in partnership with GORCC to power the lights on the Lorne Pier,” he said. “I urge the community and all levels of government to get behind the trial of this low impact form of alternate energy.” The use of wave power is not something new, but due to the high costs of parts and maintenance, as well as the units surviving the ocean’s force, the technology has been seen as costly and sometimes www.coastal-properties.com.au

ineffective. Boyd said SurgeDrive has been able to overcome these problems, with a floating buoy transferring wave forces out of the ocean and converting it to electricity or desalinated water. “The Surf Coast is an ideal place for this type of technology as it has significant wave resources,” Boyd said. Boyd and fellow director, Martin Buden, have also ensured the impact on the pier and fishermen – both recreational and commercial – is limited. The pair is also looking at securing funding – either from state or federal government level – and is also keen to pursue private investment. Hi, my name is Dr. George Klein (pictured). I am a dentist at the Sleep Health Clinic. I used to snore. I would wake up feeling like I had not slept and felt tired throughout the day. Then one day I came across a dental sleep guard that was scientifically proven to stop snoring in 95% of cases and was comfortable to wear. This treatment has the endorsement of the Australasian Sleep Association and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. This dental sleep guard has changed my life. I no longer snore and wake with a zest for life which lasts all day. The dental sleep guard works by gently holding the lower jaw forward. This simply opens the airway thereby stopping snoring and allowing for more oxygen to rejuvenate the body during sleep.

Does this sound like you?

Do you or your partner sleep in separate rooms due to loud snoring? Do you wake feeling sleep deprived and fatigued? Do you feel sleepy during the day? Has anyone heard you snort, gasp, or hold your breath during sleep Phone 5273 4644 (all hours)
