Anglesea celebrated the centenary of its rowing regatta in style on New Year’s day with a huge celebration. Crews converged on Anglesea for the big day, with the victorious ‘Growlers’ team from Lorne (from left) Ed, John, Andrew, Jarred and Brad combining to win the Grand Challenge Cup. It was the third time the ‘Growlers’ team has won the main event – following wins in 2004 and 2005. See more PETER MARSHALL photos on Page 129.

Shire faces an exciting 12 months as millions of dollars of works will be poured into local towns

BY NATHAN HALE THE SURF Coast will have more than $77million worth of infrastructure ploughed into its towns over the next 12 months in what is shaping up as an exciting start to the new decade. The combination of a new $40million Civic and Community Precinct for Torquay – and funding pledges from the State and Federal elections – have ensured the shire’s infrastructure will grow with the ever-increasing population. Expenditure over the next 12 months will include the following key projects: • $20million for a new standalone secondary school in Torquay • $10.5million for recycled water to Torquay

through the Black Rock Recycling Plant • $2.5million for the Eastern Reserve redevelopment in Winchelsea • $1.5million for the upgrade of Taylor Park in Torquay • $1.2million towards the new Anglesea CFA headquarters • $800,000 on redeveloping Spring Creek Reserve in Torquay • $500,000 to extend Torquay Kindergarten • A new natural gas connection for Winchelsea • $300,000 each for Jan Juc and Torquay surf life saving clubs Surf Coast Shire Mayor, Dean Webster, who was elected last month, said the shire faces an exciting time.

“We have a big year ahead of us with the recent election of a new state government and we are committed to working with them to achieve the best outcomes for our community and ensure we work together in implementing the coalition’s election commitments, he said. “Also, we need to ensure the completion of major projects like the 2040 Sustainable Futures Project and we have the Community Civic Recreation Precinct in Torquay North, now under construction. Recently elected Liberal Member for South Barwon, Andrew Katos, echoed Webster’s sentiments, saying the shire faces a challenging but exciting 12 months ahead. Katos ended the 11-year run of Labor’s Michael

Crutchfield when he was elected in November, and he has already identified key projects which need delivering. “The secondary college for Torquay is the highest of priorities, Katos said. “It has the shortest timelines and the most need of any project from our commitments made. The Kinder extension is also very important because it is at capacity. “There is no doubt it will be a very challenging and busy year ahead – but it is one I am looking forward to and everyone in the Surf Coast Shire should be looking forward to. For a look back at the past 12 months on the Surf Coast, see Pages 12 and 13 for our snapshot of the year that was.
