The Australian Football League season starts this week and taking time out from their preparations were Geelong stars Corey Enright and Matt Scarlett. The premiership duo visited Torquay P-9 College last week for a sports clinic with Years 3 and 4 students. Enjoying a break with Enright (left) and Scarlett were students Nikki Gibson and Chiara Centorbi. The Cats kick off their premiership defence against Essendon on Friday night. Photo: SARAH LAWRENCE
SUPER CONCERNS
Planning application for a supermarket in Aireys Inlet has residents worried about the size of the proposed development BY NATHAN HALE AIREYS Inlet residents are concerned a proposal for a supermarket in the township will go before council without the full knowledge of the local community. A planning application advertised in the Surf Coast Times earlier this month alerted a number of residents to the fact that development was planned at the site of the former hardware store. Residents are concerned, however, at the detail – or lack thereof – in the advertisement for a planning permit application at 83 Great Ocean Road. In the advertisement it states: ‘The application seeks approval for use of the land for development of building and works associated with the construction of four shops and four offices and reduction of the standard car parking requirements.’ This description fails to outline the size of the proposed supermarket, according to Aireys Inlet

District Association (AIDA) president, Barbara Fletcher. Along with fellow members of AIDA, Fletcher has been busy notifying residents of the proposed development so they are well enough informed to have their say on the planning application. “They have certainly advertised the possibility of a supermarket going ahead and we have tried to notify our members,” Fletcher said. “It is important for something as large as this that as many people know about it as possible. “It is also important that people put their views forward to the council – both for and against.” The planning application was lodged by Geelongbased Sincock Planning on behalf of a group of stakeholders, which includes the Ridgeway family who own a supermarket in Apollo Bay. Rumours of a supermarket for Aireys Inlet have circulated on and off since the hardware store became vacant some time ago; currently,
the township is serviced by the Aireys General Store. While Fletcher said AIDA did not have anything against a supermarket coming to town, she said that any new development would have to follow the rules and regulations. “This supermarket will be bigger than the Anglesea supermarket,” Fletcher said. “We have a grocery store in Aireys which is not only an amenity, but it has been designated as being a social hub under the Urban Design Guidelines… and that should be retained no matter what development is undertaken. “Looking at the guidelines that have gone on display, the development fails under the Urban Design Guidelines. “The size of the development, the height and setbacks… under these guidelines and being in close proximity to Painkalac Creek, it would need to be very sensitive. “This what residents need to be aware of and
make themselves be heard.” With objections to the application closing this Friday, Fletcher said she was concerned the deadline would pass without a number of residents making their views known. Surf Coast Shire council confirmed all planning process protocol would be followed. “Council has received an application for four shops in Aireys Inlet. The application is on public exhibition and has been advertised on site and in writing to adjoining land owners,” the shire said. “The application will be assessed in line with normal planning processes.” The application and accompanying documents are on view to the public at the Surf Coast Shire Offices at 25 Grossmans Road, Torquay, from 8.30am-5pm until Friday.
