Sunday’s Deans Marsh Festival paid tribute to the pioneers of past. Despite the inclement weather, the annual festival drew a large crowd with many dressed in the clothes of yesteryear – including Tameika Allen, 9, and Luke Permezel 11. See more PETER MARSHALL photos on page 9.
POLICE HUNT EXCLUSIVE
Torquay Police are closing in on criminals following local break-ins
BY ELEANOR WOODS POLICE are hot on the heels of two robbers following a spate of break-ins in Torquay. Over the past week 10 businesses have been broken into and thousands of dollars worth of goods stolen. Detective Sergeant Craig Blunt of the Torquay Crime Investigation Unit said CCTV footage revealed the criminals they were after were two males aged in their 20s. “It’s only a matter of time before we catch these guys. The images we have clearly identify them and someone is bound to recognise them sooner or later,” he said.
During the first robbery thieves smashed the front door of Rip Curl, at Torquay’s Surf City Plaza at 5am, and stole close to $15,000 worth of merchandise before being “scared off” by a cleaner. “They took a fair bit of stuff, including a large amount of watches,” Blunt said. “It was a really strange time to do a robbery because there are quite a few people around that time of day.” The same night, robbers “jimmied the door” at Soul Fuel Café in Torquay and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. At 3am the following morning, culprits kicked out toilet window bars to gain entry

at Swell Café in Jan Juc, before making away with a coffee grinder, juicer, alcohol, food, coins, iPods, washing powder and a first aid kit. “They took some really strange items and really trashed the place,” Blunt said. Several days later, five more businesses were hit. Between 2am and 4am on Friday, windows at Tapas Café on Gilbert Street, Real Thai Café on Pearl Street and PETstock on Bristol Road, were smashed but no entry was gained. Police are searching for these two men, who were captured on CCTV in front of Corkscrew Cellars last week.
