The wet weather may have put a dampener on the weekend but there were smiles all around as Bonnie O’Connell and Mary Foxall en joyed the best vineyards the region has to offer at the annual Toast to the Coast. The pair enjoyed the wine tasting at Bellbrae Estate with manager Matthew di Sciascio. See more weekend photos on Pages 23 and 27. Photo: PETER MARSHALL
New CD showcases local talent while raising money for local children in need
BY NATHAN HALE
A HOST of the Surf Coast’s most talented teenage musicians have banded together to appear on a CD which will raise money for the Kids Plus Foundation. The CD – the first of its kind produced on this size scale in the region – has gathered solo artists such as Torquay’s Tess Guthrie and Tarryn Lane, as well as local bands Almacknjack and Revolver and Sun. The production is the brainchild of Paul Morgan from Medici Studios in Highton, who works on a volunteer basis with the Geelong-based charity. Kids Plus Foundation is a not for profit organisation founded in 2003 by parents of children with special

needs, therapists and supporters from throughout the Surf Coast, Bellarine and Geelong. “We were brainstorming for fundraising ideas one day and we just hatched this idea of combining music and local talent with the needs of Kids Plus and it all went from there,” Morgan said. “It has been professionally produced to commercial release standards and the best part is that every cent raised goes directly to Kids Plus.” Morgan said the CD had been almost 12 months in the making and that the array of talent on offer in the region was nothing short of remarkable. He said once the idea was agreed to, the next step was to scour the region for local talent – something which ended up being one of the easier tasks in the
whole process. “All the artists we ended up with were through referrals,” Morgan said. “We approached local schools and music teachers and also went through our contacts in the industry and it wasn’t long before we had a pretty good list. “And there is just some incredible talent out there… you really don’t realise it until you hear them.” In total, 11 acts perform on the CD, which is called Homespun Volume 1. Along with those acts from the Surf Coast, performers also come from Grovedale, Newtown, Hamlyn Heights and Geelong. Morgan also said the title of the CD gives away the future of the project.
“It is definitely going to be a continual thing… that’s why we called it Homespun Volume 1,” he said. “The whole process has been such a great experience and the reaction we have received to date has been great and it is something we will continue to do. “We haven’t worked out anything, but it could be something we look at doing bi-annually.” The CD went on sale yesterday and retails for $20 – with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Kids Plus. The CD is only available through Hayden Real Estate outlets in Anglesea, Barwon Heads and Torquay, selected Ghanda stores or via the websites www.kidsplus.org.au or www.medicistudios.com
