Lorne community looks to grab a share of funding provided by The Falls Festival
BY NATHAN HALE FIFTEEN Lorne community projects are in the running to share in $16,000 in funding from The Falls Music and Arts Festival community fund. Each year The Falls Festival provides the funds to sponsor local projects within the Lorne community, with the decision on who wins the money voted on by the community. Those who want to have a say had better be quick, however, with voting closing this Sunday, October 17. Fund co-ordinator, Naomi Daly, said she was thrilled with the quantity and quality of projects submitted. “We have had such a fantastic response from the community,” she said. “I think everyone really appreciates this is an opportunity to get some really great things done in our small community. “The projects represent a broad cross-section of people and activity and it is nice to see so many people engaged and working together. “A lot of people have gone to a great deal of effort and I’d encourage everyone to take a moment and have a look at the submissions which are available in the shops – and, of course, to vote!” The projects submitted are: Cricket pitch for Lorne Aireys Cricket Club; preservation and electronic cataloguing of Lorne’s photographic history; co-operative marketing project; Lorne Football and Netball Club courtside shelter (netball court); Lorne Kindergarten outdoor shade structure; bike education programme equipment; kids’ school holiday programme equipment; Lorne/Aireys Inlet P-12 College VCAL student project to create community planter boxes
and mobile chicken house; Lorne/Aireys Inlet P-12 College sculpture creation workshop and materials; water aerobics class equipment; ‘Get Out There’ programme equipment; Lorne heritage buildings booklet; Murray to Moyne cycle team relay jerseys; Lorne Lions Easter Art show fundraiser; and Carols on the Lorne. Project information, voting forms and voting boxes can be found in FoodWorks supermarket, Kafe Kaos, Lorne Greens, Fruits of the Forest and Lorne’s Australia Post Office. Voting is open to all Lorne permanent residents or property owners, aged 16 and over. Only one vote per person will be accepted and voting closes at 5pm this Sunday. Meanwhile, the success of The Falls Festival has again been underlined with it selling out in just 12 minutes. Locals looking to attend, however, will still be given the opportunity to purchase tickets later this month as the festival releases tickets solely for those who live locally. The festival will again bring a diverse and talented collection of artists to Lorne for the event, which this year kicks off on Tuesday, December 28.
