DREAM RESULT $1.2million State Government commitment assures Anglesea CFA’s bright future
BY NATHAN HALE ANGLESEA’S dream of turning its fire brigade station into a state of the art facility has turned to reality. A visit from Premier John Brumby last Friday came with a $1.2million State Government pledge for the project, which will see the station transformed into an environmentally friendly educational facility and headquarters for the local CFA. The push for this Australian first project started last year when the Anglesea and Winchelsea Community Bank joined forces with a dedicated group of locals led by long-time CFA member Jamie Mackenzie. Just over 12 months later and with $370,000 raised courtesy of the community, $100,000 thrown in from the Anglesea and Winchelsea Community Bank and now the $1.2million government pledge, the station’s

future direction is assured. Mackenzie, the project’s co-ordinator, said the educational aspect incorporated into the design cannot be understated. “Anglesea was one of the first towns to pilot the township protection plans,â€? he said. “Our aim is to drive down any complacency amongst older Victorians by equipping their children with an education to help protect their families and themselves from the threat of bushfires.â€? Anglesea and Winchelsea Community Bank senior manager, Jeremy Morris, said the funding announcement was a great result – and the culmination of a lot of hard work from the committee. “This is just awesome‌ a great outcome for the entire community,â€? Morris said. “And this project is something that has been driven from the local brigade itself – right from a local level.
John Brumby, Michael Crutchfield and Jamie Mackenzie were all smiles at the announcement.
“The determination and passion from these guys to make this happen is nothing short of sensational. “This facility is a national first. It enhances the
firefighting capacity of the station; it has a training and education room; it has the ability to educate local people about the environment and on fire management; and it is carbon neutral. In announcing the State Government funding, Brumby applauded the community’s involvement. “I am delighted to join the community for this exciting announcement, which will drive the transformation of the Anglesea Fire Station into a state-of-the art station that will host a pilot, on-site programme to educate our young people and the community about the risk of fire in Victoria, he said. “The pilot will build on the extensive community and school education programmes run through the CFA which includes a new plan to introduce bushfire awareness into the school curriculum.
