BEFORE WE BEGIN... THE VENU E Trestles gets its name from the small bridge — built as a trestle — that one must waltz under in order to arrive on the beach at Upper Trestles. Lower Trestles gets its name by being south of Uppers. Thanks geography! Whilst surfing either wave, you’ll quickly become accustomed to the sight and sound of trains roaring and whistling and choochyewwwwwwwing down the California coast.
AT STAKE Lowers marks the beginning of the business-end of the 2014 WCT for Kelly Slater, Gabriel Medina and Mick Fanning. Medina entered the event with three wins, Fanning, two and Slater, zero. For Medina a win at Trestles — and an early loss by Kelly and Mick — would nearly guarantee him (and Brazil) a maiden world title in France or Portugal. For Kelly or Fanning, an early exit by Medina at Trestles would mean… shit, who were we kidding? Medina was never going to lose out early at Lowers.
AN D WEREN ’ T T HE R E WO MEN TO (S)WATCH AS WELL? Yes. Thanks to Swatch the women competed right alongside the men at Lowers this year for the first time ever, and they did not disappoint.
016
THE 2014 HURLEY / SWATCH WOMEN’S PRO SO DI D THE WAV ES SU C K L I K E LAST YEAR? Absolutely not. The Hurley Pro was kissed by the icy lips of a sleepy Pacific Ocean in 2013, but this year warm backto-back south swells came to play during the waiting period.

below the lip. As in: raging boners for backhand snaps.
You would think so watching the highlight reel, but no. Jordy Smith muscled past John in the final on his very last wave.
A N D T H E LA DI ES ? Ever watched a women’s ‘CT event and shrugged to yourself, I feel like I could’ve won that heat? Yeah, stop that. Steph Gilmore beat Sally Fitzgibbons in the Final and you’ve never, nor will ever, surf like that in your life. With the only perfect 10 of the event, Steph dropped multiple hammers on a Lowers right so radically, Carissa Moore, entertained her very first jealous thought. (It took 22 years.)
FALL IS TITLE SEASON… Sure is. With three events to go, Stephanie Gilmore, Carissa Moore and Sally Fitzgibbons each have two wins to their name. Tyler Wright has one. All four have a realistic shot at the title. On the men’s side, Medina has a 6,500-point lead over Slater and is 11,740 points ahead of Fanning (though Mick has two wins), meaning Kelly and Mick have no room for error. 017
