WITH BRENDAN BUCKLEY
CLICHÉ Cliché: a phrase or opinion that is overused and exposes a lack of original thought. Everything about the 2015 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach was cliché. The waves, the winners, the things that were said, the things that were done and even the Patagonia jackets that everyone wore — come on, Jan Juc ain’t that cold. None of it was original. In my final day recap, I wrote that the rest of the world has changed while Bells has stayed just the same. (I went on to compare the competition to Bob Dylan, talk about holes and more or less declare that tradition is irrelevant. You can read that Cabernet-fueled rant here). I stand by everything I said. And when the wave at Bells won’t change, it gives the surfing very little opportunity to surprise.
BELLS Nobody is surprised that Mick won. Nobody is surprised that Carissa won. And nobody is surprised that the waves were, well, Bells. The contest may not have broken any ground, but maybe that’s OK. Maybe it’s OK that the waves were frumpy and maybe it’s OK that the surfing didn’t change the game. Maybe Bells is supposed to be cliché, like a slice of Grandma’s famous apple pie or a Caribbean cocktail at sunset or something in between the two. There’s something special about stuff like that. Something nostalgic and warm, something that doesn’t need to feel exciting or new. And there’s just something about cliché Bells.

We’ll never be able to beat Kelly Slater at surfing. But we can almost beat him at bad jokes.
