WITH BRENDAN BUCKLEY
IT’S DAY ONE OF THE 2015 QUIKSILVER/ ROXY PRO. IT’S HOT. TOO HOT FOR “30 DEGREES CENTIGRADE” TO SERVE VERBAL JUSTICE, and way too hot to be outside within the reach of that #nofilter sun — be better, ozone layer. I stand, shaded but still sweating, in the half tent, half castle WSL structure on the sands of Snapper while watching Round 1 commence in tragic conditions. They were tragic because the waves were unfathomably perfect in the weeks leading up to the waiting period and another generous swell filled in immediately following the contest’s conclusion. There were nine lay days in the event’s 13-day window and on those lay days, the waves at the Superbank made a windswell in Fort Lauderdale look almost decent. (The nightlife during that time, however, made a Saturday night in New York City seem almost tame.) But tragedy gives way to opportunity and opportunity spawns
