The Aussies 2014 Official Program

Welcome to the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 2014 A message from the Minister for Police; Tourism; Road Safety and Women’s Interests Welcome to The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 2014, where thousands of athletes will this week compete alongside some of the biggest names in surf lifesaving history. The Aussies, as the event is affectionately known, is one of the largest competitions of its kind and returns to Perth this year after last being held at Scarborough Beach in 2009. Over the week-long program, over 4,500 surf lifesavers representing 311 clubs will compete in an action-packed schedule of 382 events. Scarborough Beach has been synonymous with surf lifesaving since volunteers started patrols in 1928, making it the perfect backdrop for this world class event. Scarborough is regarded as one of Perth’s iconic beaches and is an important coastal tourism precinct in Western Australia, with the highest concentration of accommodation in the metropolitan area outside of the CBD. As the Tourism Minister and local member for Scarborough, I am pleased to welcome you to this outstanding event which will showcase surf boat and ski races, flag races and the famous ironman and ironwoman competition. If you are visiting Western Australia to compete in The Aussies, or to enjoy the energy and excitement as a spectator, I invite you to take the opportunity to explore our extraordinary State. Consider our vast array of tourism experiences including the vibrant port of Fremantle, tranquil waters of Rottnest Island and Perth’s stunning beaches to make your trip one to truly remember. The Hon. Liza Harvey MLA Minister For Police; Tourism; Road Safety and Women’s Interests

A message from the City of Stirling Mayor The City of Stirling is extremely proud to be once again hosting The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 2014 at Scarborough Beach. This is the fourth time that Scarborough beach has hosted these championships and the beachfront’s open-air Amphitheatre will once again provide the perfect place for visitors and spectators to sit back, relax and take in all the action, while gazing at our beautiful coastline. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tourism Western Australia through Eventscorp, Surf Life Saving (WA), and Surf Life Saving Australia. I would also like to commend everyone involved in the planning and running of this event, for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. On behalf of the City of Stirling I would like to wish the competitors all the best for the championships and welcome the many spectators who will be watching this event from the sand. Please enjoy the hospitality of the City and enjoy our magnificent beach. Cr Giovanni Italiano JP, Mayor City of Stirling

A message from the President of Surf Life Saving Australia It gives me great pleasure to welcome all our surf lifesavers from around Australia, to The Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. I would like to take to take this opportunity to thank Perth and the State of Western Australia for being the ‘host’ for this major event to be held here on the golden sands of Scarborough Beach from Monday 31 March to Sunday 6 April. I would also like to thank Surf Life Saving WA and Scarboro SLSC for their assistance and collaboration on this fantastic event. The Aussies is the peak surf sports event for Surf Life Saving which challenges the essential lifesaving skills of members needed to perform rescues in the surf. Scarborough Beach will be a sea of pink lycra vests, now the official competition uniform worn by all lifesavers at The Aussies – and just one of many safety developments in the sport Surf Life Saving Australia has continually worked to ensure best practice risk management for our sporting events which includes independent risk auditing in each and every area of The Aussies arena, from Under 15’s to Opens and Masters prior to competition each day. 2014 is expected to bring together over 4,500 Surf Life Saving competitors to this very beach, plus hundreds of local spectators. On behalf of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA), I would especially like to thank the WA Government, WATC, the City of Stirling, our event sponsors, corporate partners and the local community. I would also like to thank the 400 strong volunteer network and the SLSA staff who will make this event come to life. I wish all competitors participating at the Championships, the very best of luck as they battle it out in the waves and on the beach for lifesaving glory. Graham Ford President, Surf Life Saving Australia

A message from the President of Surf Life Saving Western Australia Surf Life Saving WA is very pleased and proud to see The Aussies back in Western Australia. The Aussies is not only the pinnacle of surf sports but also one of the most significant events on Australia’s sporting calendar. Surf Life Saving is currently enjoying record growth in WA with club membership numbers increasing around nine per cent this season to close to 20,000. Hosting The Aussies for a week at Scarborough will provide a major profile boost for surf sports and surf live saving in general which we hope will inspire even more West Australians to become members of this great movement. I want to publicly acknowledge the crucial support provided by the State Government, through Tourism WA, as well as the City of Stirling and Surf Life Saving Australia. And a big thanks too to the thousands of interstate competitors, coaches and supporters who’ve travelled to Perth – we hope your stay is both enjoyable and successful. Mark Irwin President, Surf Life Saving Western Australia

Kurrawa’s Ky Hurst & Melissa Howard chase 10th gold Kurrawa’s two-time Olympian Ky Hurst has long been associated with gold at The Aussies and 2013 was no different as he swam and surfed his way to his ninth Australian Open Surf Race title at North Kirra last year. But the pressure will be on when he eyes-off an amazing 10th title at Scarborough in 2014 with youngsters and prospective Rio open water Olympians Simon Huitenga (City of Perth) and Victoria’s Gold Coast-based Sam Shepherd (North Burleigh) breathing down his neck. They are both looking at following Hurst’s pathway into the Australian Olympic team – an honour Hurst achieved in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. This year’s race will be as competitive as ever when you throw in the likes of 2008 winner former Wanda and Cronulla swimmer Chris Allum, now at Queenscliff, who has been so close on numerous other occasions , Terrigal’s Tim Schofield and Elouera’s Dane Farrell and Tom O’Keefe, Nathan Smith (Manly) and Dev Lahey (Northcliffe). The open surf race is a coveted title and has been won by a host of great surfers and Olympians like Noel Ryan, Ernie Henry, Jon Donohoe, Graham White, Graeme Windeatt, Ron McKeon, Graeme Brewer, Max Metzker and Mal Allen. No WA club has ever won an Australian Open Surf Race – but long time Perth-based 1992 Olympian, Deane Pieters, racing for Manly won the title for the Sydney Northern Beaches club in 1990, winning bronze for Trigg Island in 1994. The legendary Hall of Famer Don Morrison from Cottesloe had gone close for WA in the 1940s – finishing with bronze in 1947 and silver in massive seas at Manly behind Bobby Newbiggin in 1948 before again bobbing up to finish with another bronze in 1955. Hurst’s Kurrawa team mate, beach flags queen, Melissa Howard will also be out to snare a record 10th Aussies gold – having lost just once (to Lisa Wright in 2005) since her first title in 2004 for Mollymook. Howard has been the undisputed flags champion – winning in her first three in 2004-06-07 for Mollymook and remains unbeaten for Kurrawa since 2007. Meanwhile Mona Vale, from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with Bryce Munro at the helm will be chasing the club’s fourth straight open boat crown to rival North Cottesloe’s four titles with Jack Alliss at the helm between 2006 and 2009. In the board and ski area all eyes will be on prospective Rio kayak Olympian Lachlan Tame (Avoca) as he lines up for his fourth straight championship single ski gold against what always shapes up to be a star-studded field. It is bound to include a host of local WA paddlers led by Trigg Island trio Brendan Sarson, Reece Baker and Dan Humble – gold medallists in last year’s ski relay at North Kirra. Meanwhile Manly’s London Olympian Naomi Flood has become unstoppable in the women’s ski races in recent years as she stamps herself as Australia’s greatest ever female ski paddler. The big question is, can anyone stop her adding her fifth Aussie title? Flood will be joined by team mates Candice Falzon, Jo Brigden Jones and rising star Meike Kassulke. Falzon will be out to re-kindle old rivalries and friendships after spending several seasons with City of Perth. n
