FABIEN VOLLENWEIDER
TABOU PHILOSOPHY We have a simple philosophy: build boards that make windsurfing more fun. To do this, we have a 3 part process: 1. Constant Testing in 2 Year Design Cycles We design and test new prototypes all the time, but we only makes changes to the production line when we know that the new boards are not just different but also better. We like to think in 2 year cycles. This means that every shape is tried and tested for at least 2 years before being released to the public, which guarantees that when any windsurfer rides on a new Tabou, he feels the difference. The testing process starts with Fabien shaping and surfing a new prototype, and he then passes the board to Cedric and the team for testing. Nothing goes into production until the team is completely happy. Sometimes, this design process can take longer than 2 years, as was the case with the new Pocket. We tested compact wave boards for 4 years before we found a design that the whole team loved. Passion means love to the point of pain. The days between Christmas and New Years, Cedric drove over 1,000 kilometers to find wind and waves to test the final prototype of the Pocket 97. 2. Design Integration Across All Boards The lessons learned from each board help make every other board better. Even though a slalom board like the Manta is very different from a wave board like the DaCurve, the basic principles of fluid-dynamics are always the same. The knowledge we learn from making a Manta fast can be used to make the freeride and wave boards faster. The easy soft-touch ride of a freeride board is also nice to have in every other board. Like this, with every new prototype, we learn more about how to make windsurfing boards better. For example, we came up with the idea for the new, much more compact 3S while testing the new Pockets. We saw that cutting the nose and tail off the board improved maneuverability dramatically, which meant that we could make the rocker very straight. The end result is a 3S that is both more maneuverable and faster. Fabien’s 25 years of experience help him to know which qualities can be transferred from one board to another, and it is from his knowledge that we were able to use the compact concept of the new Pocket to create the new 3S. 3. Always Remember the Passion and Fun of Windsurfing Testing boards day after day can quickly feel like work rather than fun, which is why we as a team keep in contact with exciting free-spirit of windsurfing. During our annual photoshoot on Maui in April, the whole team came together for a spontaneous surf session at Jaws. Thomas, Aleix, Cedric, and Graham jumped off the rocks into the sea while Jamie, Ross, and Antony helped from land. The team rode massive waves until the sun set, and they sailed for 45 minutes downwind to come into the beach at Hookipa. There at Hookipa in the dark, the whole team shared beers and smiles. In the end, we are a passionate group of windsurfers who work to make boards that allow people around the world to share in the fun of windsurfing. The development never stops, and our passion for windsurfing never dies. The result is boards that are not just better but different.

DA CURVE The professionals ask for two things in a wave board: to go fast and turn easily. Last year, we started from zero to create a brand new DaCurve that is fast enough to rip in onshore winds and mushy waves but also maneuverable enough to carve at Hookipa. This DaCurve is the board that Thomas Traversa used to win the PWA World Title. Graham Ezzy rides the DaCurve at Jaws: “I love the DaCurve 80 at Jaws because the board is so fast, which makes it easy to catch the massive waves.”

POCKET WAVE The new Pocket is a modern wave board that is the result of 4 years of testing compact shapes. Originally we designed the new Pocket for weaker, real-world waves, but our team riders love riding the Pocket at Hookipa too. Even though it is fast and easy to ride, when pressure is applied to the backfoot during wave riding, the new Pocket turns radically with lots of speed. We tested every kind of nose and tail shape, and the new Pocket features our favorite combination: a double-diamond tail and a normal nose, for a mix of maneuverability and comfort. The short length and winger outline make turning radically easy, which allowed us to use a very straight rocker so that the Pocket accelerates even when the wind is light or the current is strong.
Ross Williams: “I love the new Pocket. The 87L works perfectly for me in Europe and Hookipa.

POCKET VINTAGE A true Tabou classic, the Pocket Vintage is the perfect wave board for every level of sailor. Easy and early to plane, the Pocket Vintage flies through the waves, allowing you to focus on which wave you want to jump or surf, which makes learning to wave sail easier. The high speed and smooth turning mean that the Pocket Vintage provides radical performance good enough for the pros. The thruster setup offers a surfy feel, and you also have the option to ride the Pocket Vintage as a single fin if you want more drive for flat water blasting or bump-and-jump.

3S LTD | CED Freedom is the spirit of windsurfing. For us, freedom means simply having fun on the water in every kind of condition. A full quiver in just one board, the 3S is a board to ride in all sea conditions, similar to the all-mountain ski in skiing. The 3S planes fast and easy like a freerider but is maneuverable enough to carve in the waves and to try freestyle tricks. New for 2017, the 3S is modern and compact, which radically increases the board’s performance in speed and maneuverability. The compact outline makes turning much easier and therefore allows us to use a straighter rocker, which means the new 3S is both faster and more maneuverable with a magic glide over the water. The shorter shape also fits better in small cars and boardbags. Additionally, the new fuller rail and flatter deck provide stability and control. Like in the previous years, the new 3S uses a double step tail cutout to increase both speed and maneuverability. In a straight line, the cutouts have less wetted surface area and therefore less drag and a higher top speed. On the rail, the cutouts act like kick tail so that the board turns in a much tighter radius. All sizes are available in the lightweight and rigid LTD construction, which makes the boards accelerate faster and respond more directly.

TWISTER Like in skateboarding, Freestylers want boards that go fast, pop high, and keep spinning, but most important is a feeling of control, which is why we designed the Twister to feel like an extension of your body, making it easy to try the newest freestyle moves. On the World Tour, Anthony Ruenes uses the Twister because it allows him to focus on landing tricks instead of thinking about the board. The Twister pops so high because of two reasons: 1) the rocker is straight under the feet with kick in the tail, which allows the tail to sink down quickly before popping back up, like an ollie on a skateboard and 2) the winger outline means the board is wide and therefore stable in the middle but has a small tail that when pushed on, creates a wave under the board that acts like a small ramp. The thinness of the Twister creates a comfortable close-to-the-water feeling that provides more control.

MANTA Fast boards win slalom races. Fast does not only mean a high top-speed but also gliding through jibes and quickly accelerating to get planing. In 2015, Tabou had three riders in the top 6 of the PWA world rankings. And every Tabou slalom rider races on the Manta, our fastest board. The Manta is a no-compromise racing board built for our team of pro riders to beat their competitors. The outline, rocker, and cut-outs are all optimized for top-speed, acceleration, and jibing on a PWA slalom course.
Cedric Borders, ranked 5th in the world, says: “I love that the Manta works in such a big range of conditions because I don’t have to think about so much, which removes some stress from racing.”

SPEEDSTER We dreamed of combining the performance of a slalom board with the easy feeling of a freeride board, so we made the Speedster. We started with the knowledge learned from making the Manta, the board our team races on for the World Tour, and we added features from the Rocket to create an easier jibe and a smoother ride that is more in contact with the water. We also added comfortable foot pads and more ergonomic footstrap positions. The result is a board with speeds close to the Manta with the easy maneuverability of the Rocket. The Speedster is almost as fast as a 100% race board but jibes like a freeride board. The Speedster is perfect for weekend racers who want to win races without worrying about settings and tuning, or for the sailor who wants to have the highest GPS speed at his local spot.

ROCKET WIDE (Race) The Rocket wide is our modern take on the Freeride board. We took the the award-winning Rocket and made it shorter, wider, thinner, and faster. The end result is a board that is soft to ride, easy to jibe, and fast in the straights. The extra width of the Rocket Wide allows it to carry speed through lulls which is good in gusty winds or on freshwater lakes. The width also helps to keep speed and stays balanced during jibes. Overall the easy outline helps the Rocket Wide fly out of jibes, and the slalom features can almost beat race boards in speed, all with a freeride comfort.

ROCKET The test-winning Rocket is a world reference for a traditional freeride board. The Rocket works with any kind of sail, from no-cam to 1 or even 2 cam. The outline, length, and rocker of the Rocket make it plane easily even in light and gusty wind. One of the favorite features of the Rocket is the signature “soft-touch feeling as the board cuts through chop. Overall, the Rocket is a classic freeride board with a balance of speed, acceleration, maneuverability, and control.

BULLITT We want to give more people access to the best sport in the world—windsurfing— so we built the Bullitt, a fun freerider with an accessible price. We took everything great about the Rocket (smooth speed, easy jibing) and adapted these features to work with a less expensive construction. Then we added a bit of width to make the boards easier for balancing and upahuling. Even though it costs less, the Bullitt’s AST construction allows the board to be resistant against the small dings that come from dropping a board or banging it against rocks. The Bullitt is the perfect freerider for young people who want to fly around the water on weekends or cruise in lighter winds on summer days. The Bullitt gives you the fun of freeride windsurfing at an accessible price.

COOLRIDER The feeling of flying on a windsurfer is better than any other sport, but windsurfing is also very hard to learn. The Coolrider makes learning windsurfing easier for adults, kids, and families. Even though the board is very big for stability, the rails are relatively small to provide control, making the Coolrider a classic funboard that also works for longboard freestyle. The 230 Liter Coolrider features a double deck in the tail for extra maneuverability despite the large volume. Inspired by feedback from windsurfing schools all over the world, each Coolrider has a soft EVA foam deck that is comfortable when climbing on the board to uphaul. A handle on the nose makes the Coolrider easy to carry. And rubber protects the board from rocks. The Coolrider is the perfect board for a light-wind summer day on the sea with the family.

ROOKIE
PVC FULL SANDWHICH CK
Kids want to rip. The Rookie Wave is a shrunk down DaCurve, and the Rookie FR is a smaller Rocket. Of course, we had to make some changes to the shapes so that they would work perfectly in a smaller size. For example, the stance is narrower to better fit shorter legs. And, we straightened the rocker on the Rookie Wave to make it faster and easier to ride. The PVC full sandwich construction means that the Rookie is both strong and light, just like the pros want for long days of training carving jibes and forward loops. The Rookie will help any windsurfing kid get better fast. Thomas Traversa says: “I would have been world champion 10 years ago if I had a board like this when I was a kid.”
