Everything contributes to the perception of a dynamic feel, in spite of it being more than 92 meters in length, while maintaining a sleek profile and sporty look despite the higher headroom. The yacht includes a coverable swimming pool along the wooden exterior surface of the yacht.

With the aim to design a new “eco-friendly” approach, emphasizing weight saving, the project has been designed to use materials more “ resistant “ with a lower specific weight for coatings and parts of the superstructure. Same philosophy has characterized the ideas related to the engine.

Prelude

Prelude, the Laraki Yacht Design is a nine deck, 163-meter super yacht that has the substance and the potential to challenge any other yacht design. Prelude is Abdeslam Laraki’s vision of a gigayacht design combined with great creativity and esthetics.

Prelude’s design is composed in parts, which the designer calls modules.

Towards the top, on the eighth deck is the Aqua-module, consisting of two pools. The wellness and water treatments pool is located in the front section. In between the waterslides in the pool is located an indoor tropical forest like environment, along with an automated sushi bar for 20 guests, where one can enjoy the view on the pool and ocean on one side and the dense tropical vegetation on the other side. On the same deck, there is a dining area surrounded by cylindrical glass walls.

Above the Aqua module there is the Flying-module. The Flying-module consists of a glass covered lounge area, located at the front, while on both sides of the module, there are a bar, pool tables, comfortable seating, and card play areas that lead to two large terraces, overlooking the waterslides and the pool on the eighth deck.

Below the Flying and Aqua module, there is the seventh deck that features, overlooking the ocean, a large lounge and entertainment area, fitted with large sunbeds, sectional sofas, a water fountain, flat screens and bars.

The sixth deck is exclusively the owner module. It is characterized by an impressive space, a large pool terrace, and two large general use terraces. There is a private reception area, which consists of a large circular living area and is fitted with large sofas of different shapes and seating configurations, a dining area and more.

The fifth deck has a distinctive futuristic command room with a huge surface that holds numerous living and entertainment areas to host large events and receptions. It also contains a large open space with a helipad, a fishpond, a bar and a variety of comfortable seating and relaxation areas.

The fourth deck is a Beach-pool-module, a large pool with a Jacuzzi and a wet bar, a variety of comfortable seating areas, large size sunbeds and two bars. In the back is the restaurant area and dining areas that extent beyond the width of the yacht for a unique unobstructed view.

The U-010 Undersea Yacht This exceptional undersea yacht, designed by Marina Colombo and Sebastiano Vida, is a majestic experience. It is built with the vision to provide a sub-marine experience and explore the deep seas but as a pleasure and relaxing cruise, combined with luxury and style.

The yacht can run on diesel or switch to electric propulsion, and the entire craft is 218 feet with an inner surface greater than 7,500 square meters. With two 800-hp electric motors, the vessel travels under water at 10 knots and dives to a maximum depth of 190′ to 200′. When it re-emerges, the craft’s two 1,800-hp diesel engines take over for surface cruising. The remarkable integrated systems of stabilization means that the voyage on the sea surface is slow and comfortable even under the poorest conditions.

This spectacular vessel carried a price tag of $160 million upon completion. It is 58 metres long and 38 metres wide, providing a total guest surface area of 3,400sq metres, and weighs in at 2,400 tonnes. The yacht will cruise at 12knots with a maximum speed of 14knots.

It is capable of catering for up to 12 guests, attended by a crew of 20, and spans across three floors, consisting of the “master space”, “guest space” and “common space”. Instead of a traditional tapered stern, the WHY has a sheared off appearance. The naval architect Mauro Sculii said the strange dimensions gave a great stability to the boat. The interiors of the yacht are astoundingly beautiful and spacious.

The 200sq metre master area covers the entire third floor and has full views of the sea from its private terrace, while the guest space, containing five bedrooms, spans the second level.

The common space is at the bottom of the ship and features a

25-metre swimming pool, wonderfully lit spa, cinema, music room, dining room, and a 30m beach.

Design and comfort are not the only features boasted by the designers. The yacht is built to be environmentally friendly, generating 500kw of solar energy a day through 900sq metres of photovoltaic panels covering its roof and hull. It is expected to bring about 200 tonnes of diesel saving per year. It will also be fitted with an ultra-low consumption LED lighting system.

The yacht also contains technologically advanced waste management systems to handle both organic and inorganic waste.

With all the comfort and beauty that anyone can dream of, this yacht is a luxurious mansion. With all its glory, it would be interesting to see who would be the first lucky owner if this piece of art.

Passion for cars at any price

S

upercars, hypercars, whatever you want to call them , they are simply what is best in the automobile world. Horse-power galore, carbon in abundance, and 0 to 100km/h in under 3 seconds, evidently all of these come at a price. For pure viewing pleasure or for potential buyers here is a selection of the 15 most expensive and most desir able cars of the moment.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

The latest version of the Veyron, the Super Sport is aiming to be the best of the Molshein brand. Propelled by a W16 with 1,200 hp, compared to 1,001 hp in the standard version, this is a Veyron on steroids and, for the past few years, has been considered as the fastest series car in the world. This is because its top speed has been measured and verified by the Guinness Book of Records, at no less than 431 km/h! The exterior and interior of the car stay faithful to the brand’s standards in terms of finishing and quality of the materials, better than the rest. Just like its base price of around €2 million. It has been recently rumoured that there will be a “Super Veyron” for 2014, lighter by 200kg , with 1,500 hp to be sold at approximately €6 million. Watch this space.

Lamborghini Veneno

Veneno, a legendary fighting bull from the beginning of the 20th century, was a particularly aggressive and fast beast. Two adjectives which also apply perfectly to this new creation, designed especially to celebrate the 50th birthday of the manufacturer. The exterior design of the Veneno shows it’s aggressiveness in spades, so much so it’s verging on a caricature. This is particularly the case at the back where the splitter and rear wings are out of this world. The heart of the beast is a perfect fit for its intimidating body: 12 cylinders, 6.5 litres, 750 hp. in order to hit 0 to 100km/h in 2.6 seconds. Only three cars have been made and owners have already been found. The Veneno continues the outrageousness with its record price tag of €3.6 million.

W Motors Lykan Hypersport

Big fans of luxury cars, Middle Eastern clientele now have the possibility of buying ‘local’ with the arrival of manufacturer W Motors to the supercar market. Based in Dubai, the young company did indeed surprise the world during the last Qatar Motor Show by unveiling the Lykan HyperSport. The fruits of a collaboration with the design studio StudioTorino and the manufacturer Ruf Automobile, this Arab supercar oscillates between luxury, power and hi-tech technologies. The centre console reveals a previously unseen holographic panel; the topstitching of the seats has been done in gold thread whereas the LED headlights are incrusted with diamonds. Extraordinary, just like its ability to hit 100km/h in 2.8 seconds thanks to its 750 hp, 6 cylinder twin turbo charged engine.

All of this for the modest price of €2.5 million.

Pagani Zonda

A veritable automobile expert, the manufacturer Pagani owes its renown to the Zonda, a model introduced in 1999, and which has seen several versions since. Amongst the most recent is the Cinque Roadster, a convertible version, only 5 units made. A titanium and carbon fibre chassis, V12 AMG twin turbo 7.3 litre engine with 678 hp, 1,210kg dry weight. The technical specifications are just as impressive as its ability to go from 0 to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds. The latest member of the Zonda family is the Revolucion, and should satisfy track fans. The V12 engine is expanded to 800 hp, and the dry weight reduced to a ridiculous 1,070kg. The aerodynamics of the car are further improved with the introduction of an adjustable DRS rear wing. Top speed is in excess of 350km/h and 100km/h can be hit in 2.7 seconds. Expect €2.3 million for the Cinque Roadster and €2.2 million for the Revolucion.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse

Always more powerful, always faster, at Bugatti they don’t mess around with numbers and records, it’s a question of brand image. So when the Molshein manufacturer takes off the roof from its Veyron Super Sport, they create the Grand Sport Vitesse, in other words the fastest cabriolet in the world. In fact the speedster reached a speed of 408.84 km/h in April last year, a record endorsed by an external organisation. This is an exploit largely due to its 16 cylinder quadturbo 8 litre engine positioned in the back. With 1,200 hp and 1,500 Nm of torque, the carbon monocoque chassis was specifically designed to guarantee safe and precise control of the AWD system. The precautions are all but futile, with the engine valued at €1.9 million excluding taxes.

Aston Martin One-77

The most powerful and the most exclusive of the Aston Martin family stands out from its sisters at first glance. With its muscular design, ventilated bonnet and noticeable air vents, the Aston Martin One-77 says it all, yes, but still with the elegance that is characteristic of the British brand. The chassis is made of carbon fibre whereas the body is made of aluminium, and all of it made by hand. Under the long bonnet an atmospheric V12 7.3 engine is hidden. It produces not only an intoxicating sound, but also 750hp, reaches 100km/h in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 354km/h. The 77 units to be made have already been sold at a price of €1.4 million each. An amount which would never decrease on the second hand market, due to the rarity factor!

Pagani Huayra

Baptised Huayra, the name of the ‘god of wind’ from an old American Indian population, is the latest creation from the Modena manufacturer and is a style model in terms of aerodynamics. According to Horacio Pagani in his own words, the supercar was created like a wing , capable of adapting with the changing of the wind. Following this philosophy, several active aerodynamic elements have been integrated, such as the adjustable front suspension or the four separate flaps placed at the extremities of the vehicle. In terms of the engine, Pagani has once again called upon AMG for a tailor made V12 twin-turbo engine with 730hp and an impressive 1,000Nm of torque. The car’s performance remains faithful to the usual standards of the brand with 0 to 100km/h reached in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 370km/h. Base price €1.4 million.

Ferrari LaFerrari

Star of the last Geneva motor show, the LaFerrari has the huge task of following the mythical Enzo. And, Surprise! It’s a hybrid! Just like its direct competition the P1 from McLaren, the famous brand of the rearing horse has chosen to give its latest creation a thermal and electrical engine. It is the first commercialised Ferrari hybrid, but it is no less powerful. The heart of the car is a V12 6.3 litre engine which, coupled with the electric motor, produces no less than 963hp. It’s a good drive, and goes from 0-100km/h in less than 3 seconds, and top speeds exceed 350km/h. These performances are due to its light weight at 1,370kg , and an aerodynamically optimised exterior design. In total 499 units are to be made and are already being sold at €1.2 million.

Koenigsegg Agrera R

Austere and boring? Forget what you think you know about Swedish cars.

With the manufacturer Koenigsegg , you can explore the exhilarating world of supercars. Amongst its most beautiful creations is the Agrera R, a real rocket car capable of reaching 100km/h in 2.8 seconds and an indecent top speed of 420 km/h. And it’s a Swedish motor which is behind the reins. In fact, the manufacturer internally developed a V8, 5 litre engine producing 1,140 hp and an equally impressive four figure 1,200 Nm in torque. Noteworthy mentions go to the original rims made of carbon fibre, the latest finishing touches from this attractive Swedish car, prices start from €1.2 million.

McLaren P1

Following the example of Porsche and Ferrari, the British manufacturer has launched itself into the hybrid sports care sector with the McLaren P1.

P1 stands for Position One, a ranking that the British team hope to keep from its competitors. The arguments are all there: a line inspired by the MP4-12C and even more daring , chassis and body work in carbon fibre but above all a hybrid propulsion system which reaches 916hp for a top speed of 350km/h and 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds. Several elements have been borrowed from its Formula 1 big sister like the carbon-ceramic brakes or the adjustable rear DRS wing. 375 units are being made and prices for the McLaren P1 start at €1 million.

Hennessey Venom GT

With the Venom GT, the American manufacturer Hennessey decided to focus on pure speed and the records that go with is. It can do 0-100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, 0-300 km/h in 13.63 seconds (world record) and with a maximum speed measured at 427 km/h, the performances of this small coupé are baffling. Based on the chassis from a Lotus Exige, the Venom GT runs on an 8 cylinder, 7 litre engine producing 1,244 hp. with a manual 6 speed gear box. It should be noted that the company has already announced an even more powerful new model for 2014, with a larger 1,500hp engine. The current version can be purchased for around €930,000 with an extra €100,000 for the roadster option.

Zenvo ST1

The Zenvo ST1 has a singular style, muscular and aggressive and makes an impression the first time you see it. Apart from its figure, this Danish supercar has everything it needs under the rear hood, to encroach on Bugatti Veyron territory. The V8 7 litre engine is equipped with a supercharger turbo and compressor, which allows it to produce 1,104 hp with 1,430 Nm in torque. All of this for the feather weight of 1,347 kg , meaning it can reach 100 km/h in 3 seconds and a self-limited top speed of 375 km/h. It should be noted that there is a special edition limited to the American market, the ST1 50S, with an increased 1,250 hp motor. Allow approximately €900,000 to drive Danish.

Maybach Landaulet

Even though 2013 has signalled the end for the Maybach brand, we cannot ignore the Landaulet. This version of the 62S has put back into fashion the limousines of the 20’s and 30’s with chauffeur and opening roof especially for the passengers.

This is because the Landaulet is better appreciated from the back seat rather than the driving seat, where you can relax on the luxurious leather seat, sunglasses on and glass in hand. Despite its weight exceeding three tonnes, the limousine is still sprightly, if required, thanks to its enormous V12 6 litre twin-turbo engine.

It’s not enough to compete with Lamborghini Veneno but it can still comfortably reach 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. The last models produced can be bought from €900,000.

Porsche 918 Spyder

Presented as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the Porsche 918 Spyder will be commercialised in its series version at the end of 2013. On the menu, a monster of power and technology produced as 918 units, no more, no less. The main engine is 8 cylinders, 4.6 litres producing 608 hp. This is accompanied by 2 electric motors, one at the front and one at the back for a total of 887 hp. and 1,275 Nm of torque.

Rimac Concept_One

Based in Zagreb in Croatia, the company Rimac Automobili set istelf the slightly crazy challenge of producing a 100% electric series supercar. And they have succeeded with the Concept_One, made as 88 units, with the first cars delivered at the start of the year. This vehicle clearly distinguishes itself from its competitors with a revolutionary four electric motor system, each one connected to a wheel, which offers an unprecedented driving sensation. Even though it is electric it still performs like the best with 1,080 hp, 1,600 Nm of torque and can do from 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. Eric Coudray and Lionel Betoux

Cabestan’s new direction Text: Arlette Dubuis

One is a genius watchmaker who can boast of being behind the Gyrotourbillon and Cabestan’s outstanding mechanisms, the other stands out for having an unparalleled entrepreneurial streak. When they met in late 2012, it was as if they were old friends.

At the start of 2013, Lionel Betoux took charge at Cabestan, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Since then, the two men have been pursuing a common goal: turning Cabestan into a fully-fledged player in the world of fine Swiss horology.

Here is our interview with them.

Sur La Terre: How do you define the identity of the brand?

Lionel Betoux: It’s contained with the name: Cabestan [French for “capstan”]. It’s a maritime term for a winch on a vertical axis which, when turned by hand, lets a sail be hoisted or an anchor be lifted. Each of our watches has the special feature of displaying a movement transposed vertically which means the time is read not on a dial but rather on two rotating drums.

The Winch Tourbillon Vertical is a real homage to the world of sailing, and was launched in 2008. Three years after the launch of that model, which has now become a classic, Eric Coudray presented the Trapezium, a watch which defies the laws of geometry, with its complex case combining quadrilaterals. The excellence of the design and its extraordinary creativity have already been recognised by the jury of the GTE 2012 Awards.

Now, we are continuing this method of reading with the new model which is currently being launched. The Terra Luna contains an addition layer of complexity: a lavish threedimensional moon phase.

SLT: The creation and development of a vertical watch movement imposes certain constraints. How have you managed to combine aesthetics and technology?

Eric Coudray: When I arrived at Cabestan, which was now more than 5 years ago, I was presented with a timepiece with an exceptional design, but which had the major drawback of not working! In contrast to a traditional movement, which is made up of a bridge and a dial enclosing the cogs, a vertical movement involves having in effect two bridges. To make the first model work, I modified the 939 parts which it was made of, entirely by hand. Today, the combination of the fusee and the vertically-mounted tourbillon mean our watches are some of the most accurate in the world.

SLT: To compete with the major watch brands, independent watchmakers need to provide real added value. What is Cabestan’s position now?

L.B.: As Eric mentioned, artisanal production is part of the DNA of Cabestan. Unlike the majority of independent watch brands, Cabestan has had its own workshop right from the start. Located in L’Orient, in the Vallée de Joux, it houses 4 watchmakers, supervised by Eric. More broadly, having a workshop provides Cabestan with a creative freedom which positions it as an ultra-luxury brand, especially due to its ability to offer limited-edition models…

E.C.: ... and personalised models too! All our models have been specially designed to meet the desires of our customers, who,

incidentally, we love welcoming to our workshop. L.B.: Our products are distributed in several outlets in Switzerland and abroad. We are now hoping to increase our availability internationally, especially in Asia and the US. SLT: Are you planning any new launches in 2014?

L.B.: Yes, we will soon launch a model fully conceived and realised by Eric Coudray. It will symbolise the key position which he now occupies at Cabestan.

E.C.: While the details of this special model are being kept secret for now, I can tell you that this new model will offer a revolutionary design and movement, while the materials used will be, in contrast, traditional ones. That’s because my aim has always been to produce reliable timepieces, intended to be passed on from generation to generation.

PABLO PICASSO’S ‘DORA MAAR AU CHAT’

This is a 1941 painting by Pablo Picasso that depicts Dora Maar, the painter’s lover, seated on a chair with a small cat on her shoulders. The canvas measures 50 ½ by 37 ½ inches / 128.3 cm by 95.3 cm. The painting is appreciated for its brilliance of colour and the complex and dense patterning of the model’s dress.

In the 1940s, the painting was obtained by Chicago collectors Leigh and Mary Block. They sold the painting in 1963 after which the painting was never shown until 2005. In 2006, it was auctioned at $ 95.2 million to an anonymous Russian bidder.
