Douglas Roulston

Recognised as one of Scotland’s most exciting emerging landscape painters, Douglas Roulston has built a reputation for his dramatic and atmospheric depictions of the country’s wild, rugged terrain. He earned a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, followed by a Master of Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in 2008. In 2013, he furthered his studies with a PGDE in Art and Design and now balances his painting career with part-time teaching in the East of Scotland.

Deeply inspired by the 19th-century Romantic painters who first captured Scotland’s untamed beauty, Douglas infuses his work with a bold, expressive energy. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, he heightens the drama of the landscape— intensifying rugged rock faces, stormy seas, and turbulent skies pierced by shafts of light. His distinctive blend of realism and romanticism combines vivid colour, dynamic movement, and a masterful command of light and weather. Through his work, he conveys not just the majesty of Scotland’s scenery but also its emotional depth and enduring mystique.

An avid outdoorsman and extreme sports enthusiast, Douglas frequently explores Scotland’s most remote landscapes on his mountain bike, immersing himself in the wilderness that fuels his creativity. His passion for adventure is reflected in his paintings, which capture the raw, untamed spirit of the land.

Beyond his painting, Douglas is dedicated to using his creativity to support charitable causes. His painted sculptures—including Oor Wullie’s Big Bucket Trail, Storm the Scotty Dog, and Ossian the Highland Coo— have collectively raised thousands of pounds for charity. His well-known Star Wars-themed snow sculptures and large-scale Halloween display for CHAS in 2023, which raised nearly £1,000, have brought joy to many. These community-driven projects bring him great fulfilment, and he hopes to inspire others to give back through creativity.

The Odyssey Within is Douglas’s most ambitious collection to date, exploring places of deep personal significance—childhood landscapes, cherished holiday destinations, and moments of quiet reflection. Each painting is imbued with nostalgia and emotion, inviting viewers to share in his profound connection to Scotland’s natural world.
