DAVID YURMAN ARTISTS STILL AT WORK

Moving back to his native New York City several years later to pursue his passion for sculpture and form, he served apprenticeships under master sculptors Jacques Lipschitz, Hans Van de Bovenkamp and Theodore Rozack – experiences he describes as life-altering. Then, another call from destiny: the chance meeting of his muse and future wife and partner, Sybil.

“We create art for people to wear.” With those words, David and Sybil Yurman articulated an enduring vision for their company, America’s foremost jewelry house for over 30 years. From the very beginning, their belief that art is personal – that the artist’s world is unique and the creative process is an expression of the artist’s aesthetic – made using the word ‘jewelry’ seem insufficient. ‘Jewelry’ doesn’t entirely encompass David Yurman’s vision of what he is creating, nor does it express his passion for the creative process, his love of design and his refusal to be led by conventional wisdom. His interest in sculpting began early – at just 13 years old. During summers off from high school, David studied art, working as an apprentice to Cuban sculptor Ernesto Gonzales in Provincetown, Massachusetts. In his 20s, he hitchhiked to California, joining other artists in Big Sur, and immersing himself in the culture and lifestyle of the bohemian community.

His romantic nature inspired, he sculpted a piece of jewelry as a gift for her. She wore it to an art gallery opening and the owner, taken with the design, asked if David had more to sell. He recalls, “I couldn’t imagine recreating something so personal that I had made for Sybil, so I said ‘no’ – but, at the very same moment, Sybil said ‘yes’ – and, like that, we found ourselves in the jewelry business.” Though he never set out to be a jewelry designer, working closely with Sybil, a painter in her own right, led him to explore different avenues of artistic expression. For the two halves of the famed Yurman design team, their collaboration as artists epitomizes the very essence of yin and yang. “We are opposite,” says Sybil, “and that makes our force. Together, we create something bigger than us, sometimes larger than life itself.” While David sees the world through the lens of a sculptor, with a refined sense of proportion and a three-dimensional perspective, his muse sees the world as a kaleidoscope of emotion, color, form and movement. After years of designing sculptural jewelry that was sold at craft shows and galleries, it was David’s creation of the cable bracelet, a twisted helix of sterling silver wire composed of multiple strands that put his name on the proverbial map.

The piece became an instant icon – a contemporary classic that has served as the thread that runs through all of the design collections. Deemed a phenomenon in the jewelry world, David Yurman’s handcrafted creations – silver paired with gold, and diamonds and semi-precious stones set in silver – were revolutionary. The pieces, with ancient Gothic and Egyptian references, blended classic with contemporary styling. “We bridged the gap between fashion and fine jewelry, and we used art as the bridge,” says David. For David and Sybil Yurman, beautiful jewelry is not the end result of a simple technique or a single element. Outstanding quality and extraordinary craftsmanship are achieved from a foundation of artistic excellence. Over 30 years later, what began as an artist’s passion for sculpture and a painter’s love for color has turned into a jewelry house that continues in the classic tradition of the guild, but pushes the boundaries of convention with imagination and innovation.

A STROKE OF GENIUS IN FIVE LETTERS On 2 July 1908, Hans Wilsdorf officially filed and registered “ROLEX” as a brand name in Switzerland – a master stroke that would shape the company’s future. A veritable visionary, Hans Wilsdorf was truly ahead of his time in terms of intellectual property. Indeed, a name like “ROLEX”, with its three strong consonants and two vowels, corresponds to criteria that still apply today in choosing a successful brand name.

S U P R I S I N G LY M O D E R N Hans Wilsdorf’s requirements in his search for the name “Rolex” were surprisingly modern. He had determined that the name had to: • be short, with no more than five letters • be easy to pronounce in every language • look good on movements and dials • have a good ring to it • be easy to remember

THE MUSE OF INSPIRATION Hans Wilsdorf considered several options before arriving at his decision by chance one day. As he recounted in a speech delivered on 2 July 1958, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the brand: “I tried combining the letters of the alphabet in every possible way. This gave me hundreds of names, but none of them felt quite right. One morning, while riding on the upper deck of a horse-drawn omnibus along Cheapside in the City of London, a genie whispered ‘Rolex’ in my ear.” A few days later the “ROLEX” trademark was filed and officially registered in Switzerland. In 1913 the “ROLEX” brand was registered internationally. Today it is registered worldwide.

6

susanrobinsonjewelry.com

INCREASED VISIBILITY After having protected the name, Hans Wilsdorf had another challenge beforehim: to convince the retailers to include “ROLEX” rather than their own name on the watch. At the time, each jeweller or watchmaker wanted to place his own name on the dial and not reveal the name of the supplier or manufacturer. To this end, Hans Wilsdorf proceeded a step at a time, as related in his memoirs. “At first I ventured to inscribe ‘ROLEX’ on one watch in every six, hoping that this watch would get through and be sold. Gradually, I dared to put it on two out of six, and later it appeared on three.” In 1926, the year of the launch of the Rolex Oyster waterproof wristwatch, Hans Wilsdorf vowed that, from that date forth, no single watch would be delivered without the “ROLEX” brand name figuring on its dial, case and movement. There was no turning back. •

INSIDE TUDOR M A K I N G O F A M OV E M E NT

It could be considered something of a dream come true for Hans Wilsdorf. Best known as the man who founded Rolex, Wilsdorf also found another iconic watch brand, Tudor in 1946. While Rolex continues to be its most famous big brother, Tudor is making strides in its own right. Ever since it was founded Tudor (named for the Tudor period of England) the brand’s cases contained ETA movements. This year, Tudor introduced its first in-house manufactured mechanical movements. Historically, the movements used by the brand, sourced exclusively from Swiss suppliers, have always been required to achieve a high level of reliability and precision. The same characteristics define the new Tudor movements. For example, the new calibre TUDOR MT5612, now powering the Pelagos model, boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours means that its wearer can, for example, take off the watch on Friday evening and put it on again on Monday morning without having to wind it. In addition tithe hour, minute and central second functions, it provides an instant date display visible through an aperture positioned at 3 o’clock.

12 susanrobinsonjewelry.com

Beating to a frequency of 28,800 beats/ hour or 4 Hz, the caliber TUDOR MT5612 is regulated by a variable inertia oscillator with silicon balance spring, held in place by a traversing bridge fixed at both sides to improve resistance to shocks and vibrations. Its self-winding system is bidirectional. Moreover, in a first for a Tudor product, it is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

This year, North Flag and Pelagos become the first Tudor models to be fitted with movements developed and produced by the brand itself.

The introduction represents the first stage in a major industrial strategy aiming to provide greater independence to become one of the most complete traditional mechanical divers’ watches on the market. Having movements with such precise specifications and functions is key to the Tudor philosophy: a sense of adventure. This trend originates from the simultaneous need for activity and the desire to take calculated risks against the backdrop of the great outdoors. In true pioneering spirit, for several years Tudor has presented its products within the context of modern adventure. Some were fictional, such as the Fastrider Black Shield’s dark world of volcanic eruption, and some more realistic, like the Heritage Chrono Blue’s sunny Riviera and the Heritage Ranger’s journey across Arctic lands. As different as they may be, these worlds each embody an aspirational dimension with the promise of escape. And with that, comes a self-sufficiency that Tudor injects through its “tool” watches. Tudor watches are made for the modern adventurer, who expects a tool watch to know no limits other than those of his imagination and courage. That proves more true than ever with the evolution into manufacture movements.

CHARLES KRYPELL Creating generational jewelry designs for the sophisticated collector

Susan and Charles met 30 years ago when they were both getting started in the jewelry industry. Through the years, they have watched each other grow. Charles visits our store in East Texas multiple times a year and allows our customers to have an incredible, unique experience to tell for generations to come. Charles Krypell is a brand synonymous with luxury, craftsmanship, and quality. Charles’ ability to connect with his customers through his designs comes from three and a half decades of creating timeless jewelry for the sophisticated collector. At a young age Charles was able to transfer his innate sculptor ability into designing wearable modern classics. Charles jokes around that when someone offered to purchase his final presentation at Pratt Institute Design School, a sculptured art creation, he was hooked; both in terms of design and business. Created through the desire to explore new limits, Charles constantly pushes the boundaries of ordinary design. Charles challenges himself and his master jewelers in creating jewelry that has a timeless and generational feel.

16 susanrobinsonjewelry.com

Every Charles Krypell design is linked over time. This is a philosophy that Charles goes by - jewelry design should be an evolution in styling, not a complete revolution, so that year to year each recipient can mix and match and have an eclectic style created. In all the collections that Charles designs he is focused on evolving them into trend setting designs while maintaining his uniqueness in styling and attention to detail in every piece. In one word, it’s about passion - not only for sculpting exquisite jewelry that will be tomorrow’s heirlooms but also by satisfying his customers and turning them into collectors of his creations.

PROPOSALS

Ian & Hutton

“They say ‘when you know, you know’. Hutton and I knew about 2-3 months in that we were in love. As we progressed into the spring of 2013 our love and relationship hit full stride, even with the fact that I was traveling weekly for work. The distance was challenging and Sunday nights were difficult, but between quality time on weekends and long phone conversations on weekdays, we were overcoming the obstacle well. Hutton and I love to travel so we planned a trip for summer 2014 to Scotland and Italy. Hutton studied abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland. While she was there, she hiked a mountain that overlooks the city called Arthur’s Seat. The location is a beautiful overlook for the entire city on one side and the Scottish countryside and ocean on the other. I knew Arthur’s Seat was a sentimental place for Hutton as it’s a part of her testimony, so I decided it was the perfect spot for the proposal. In the afternoon on June 29, 2014, we set out to hike Arthur’s Seat. After an hour hike, I asked Hutton to marry me as we sat overlooking the entire city. We talked about our lives, and love for each other and luckily she said yes – it was the perfect day.”

#ENGAGEMENT

Zach & Laura “My wife and I met on a blind date. Two of our close friends introduced us. She was finishing school in Abilene and I had just been transferred there for work. I went on a family trip for her parents’ anniversary to Maui last October. When we were flying home, I looked over at her and knew I never wanted to travel with anyone else. She was more than I could have ever imagined in the girl of my dreams. She is beautiful, hardworking, thoughtful of others, and completely selfless. On another family trip to California for her sister’s graduation in June, she wanted a picture of us together in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. Her mom, who was taking the photo, counted to three and I dropped down on one knee. She said yes! We were married July 31st at San Francisco City Hall on the 4th Floor North Balcony with 25 of our closest friends and family. It was the perfect day with the perfect girl who knew she had the perfect ring.”

Cole & Allison “Cole and I met at my family’s ranch in west Texas. He was there from the Fort Worth area to visit a friend and help work cattle that weekend and I was escaping from Dallas. We bonded over a love for both city and country and were immediately inseparable. Within the year we both took a leap of faith and took new jobs in West Texas. In spring of 2014 he sent me to see Susan, Kat and Larry along with my sisters to look at rings. He said, “Go figure out what you like, tell your sisters and then forget about it!” In November of 2014, we went with my family to Santa Fe, NM to spend Thanksgiving. One morning Cole took me to the Four Seasons in the mountains for an early Birthday brunch. Afterwards we drove up into the National Forrest to take a Christmas picture (or so I thought!) and when we got out, we spent some time talking and taking in the view. Next thing I knew he was on one knee and I was crying tears of joy! I am absolutely in love with my engagement ring and enjoyed the experience of going back to pick wedding bands with Larry and Kat!”

Clayton & Claire “The first time I met Claire was at the popular Baylor watering hole, Scruffy Murphy’s. I noticed Claire for the very first time as she was standing among the group with her older sister, Liz, a classmate and friend. She was and still is the most stunning woman I’ve ever seen. After years of friendship, dating and long distance; I knew that she was the one, which is still and always will be true. One evening in Chicago, in one of the greatest moments of my life, Claire told me she loved me on the rooftop of her building. On September 6, 2014, I proposed to Claire at that very same spot on that same rooftop.”

#SUSANROBINSONBRIDE Nick & Joy “Joy and I were engaged in early September 2015. We decided to get married on a moonlight night while were kayaking in Lake Lure, North Carolina. Shortly thereafter, I worked with Susan Robinson Jewelry to find the perfect stone and setting, wrote her a song that I sang to her, and proposed. We celebrated with her girlfriends later that evening over champagne. I highly recommend Kat, Larry, Katherine and Susan Robinson Jewelry to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience, great service, and a fantastic piece of jewelry.”

Artie & Sara

#TYLERTEXAS

“Artie had planned a 10-day European trip through Italy and Spain over the summer of 2012. We were going to Venice, Rome, St.Tropez and Monaco! The first night we went to an amazing authentic Italian dinner in Venice and walked around Piazza San Marco. When we got back to our hotel, I realized there was a shiny silver Rolex sitting on my pillow (also from Susan Robinson Jewelry). My immediate thought was that he probably felt bad that he wasn’t going to propose so this would at least get him by for another few months. The next day he had set up a nice dinner at one of our favorite places, Cipriani. As we walked out of our hotel for dinner, awaiting us was a gondola with a fancy bottle of champagne sitting on the boat. The gondolier took us through all of the canals in Venice. I could tell that Artie was starting to act a little strange. After about 20 minutes, as the sun was starting to set, he asked the gondolier if he could take a picture of us. He then got down on one knee and said “I’ve wanted to do this since the moment I met you...will you marry me?” Typical girl, I started crying and grabbed him for a big hug. After a few minutes of me blubbering he said “So, are you going to say yes??” I completely forgot to answer him! “YES YES YES!” It was the most romantic and unforgettable moment of my life. I could not have imagined a more perfect proposal.”

It’s as easy as engraving initials, a significant date or a special line from a favorite song or film. Here are some helpful tips on trends in men’s jewelry.

RINGS No longer just for the married, rings have grown in great popularity for accessorizing the hands. Unless it is an actual wedding band, there are no set rules for which hand or finger you adorn. Simplicity is important in wearing a ring fashionably. Select a key piece to display on a middle finger, whether it is thick band or one with a unique stone set into it. Many men wear rings with an attractive masculine stone such as Onyx, Turquoise, or Tigers Eye.

NECKLACES

KNIVES

A leather necklace with a stone pendant has an earthy look, while a platinum or gold chain and pendant carries an edgy feel. David Yurman added a men’s collection of dog tags crafted in black titanium with yellow gold or meteorite accents that appeal to all.

William Henry knives, hand-forged tapestries in metal, chisel carved silver, hand-burnished gold inlay, fine hand engraving, exotic materials, and inlaid gemstones are interwoven into stunning pieces of timeless stature. The distinctive character of the artistry and the personality of the materials make this brand’s every creation truly unique. No two pieces are alike.

BRACELETS

CUFFLINKS

No longer is the gold chain link style the standard. Today, bracelets are fabricated from a variety of materials from steel, silver, or leather. Layering bracelets can also look fashionable by wearing ones made from similar materials but in a mixture of weight and width.

A traditional staple in men’s accessories, cufflinks can vary from simple to extravagant. They can be worn every day to work or for formal occasions. Cufflinks are a simple accessory that can make a bold statement.

BREITLING EMERGENCY II WATCH The system uses a rechargeable battery, which should be charged every two months. That Breitling was able to manage all this in the space of a wristwatch is very cool.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to be rescued, the Breitling Emergency II watch is the device you want strapped to your wrist. More than a fashion statement, the Emergency II is credited with saving lives. The Emergency II watch is essentially part timepiece, and part radio transmitter. The new technology of the Emergency II watch is rather fantastic. Breitling is able to offer the same, no-brainer operation as the original. As a watch, the Emergency II looks like the big brother of the original Emergency. The Emergency II is a rather large timepiece, even by large watch standards. It is wearable, but at 51mm wide, it is probably going to be the largest watch in your collection. However, being produced entirely in titanium, the Emergency II isn’t that heavy. The transmitter has a pair of antennae that sit in a pair of capsules which are accessible on the sides of the watch. Unscrewing the caps and extending the wire-style antenna automatically activates the beacon system, which alternates between sending out signals to the 121.5 MHz and 406.040 MHz bands periodically.

Breitling supplies a smart charging base with each Emergency II watch. The charging base not only charges the beacon battery, but also does a systems check to ensure that the system is in proper working order. The watch movement itself operates on a separate battery. This new system is significantly more robust than the one in the older Emergency watch. In addition to the dual frequency capabilities, the Breitling Emergency II watch is finally an emergency beacon system that allows for search and rescue anywhere in the world.

From the markings on the case back to the overall personality of the watch, the Emergency II isn’t your run of the mill gimmicky high-end sport watch but rather a serious tool for active professionals who find themselves in high-risk situations. The entire point of a product like the Emergency II is to be reliable, and Breitling has done everything in their power to ensure that the Emergency II watch is just that.

more than a fashion statement... ...a life saver

The first ever personal locator beacon designed for wrist wear, meaning literally on you at all times, it shares your feats around the globe while guaranteeing maximum safety. Breitling Emergency: the watch that can save your life.

Handle with care... Whether it’s a Mercedes Benz, an Azimut boat, or even an Apple laptop, periodic care and professional maintenance is required no matter how prestigious the brand. The same is true of fine watches. While Swiss watchmakers are adept at creating movements and timepieces that withstand the rigors of daily use, it’s still important to use proper care to preserve your timepieces. For instance, even if your chronograph or moon phase watch operates seemingly perfect after several years, it will still need maintenance. Your watch should be brought in to an authorized repair dealer every six to eight years. If a complete service is necessary, the watchmaker will overhaul the movement. To do this, he will entirely dismantle the movement, clean each part and replace any defective components. He will then wind the movement, lubricate it, adjust it and then proceed to check the rate and functions. The watch case and the metal bracelet will be submerged in an ultrasonic bath. All gaskets will then be replaced, after which the watch will be cased up and the bracelet fitted. Finally, a quality control will be performed. The watchmaker checks the water resistance in accordance with the model’s specifications, and then proceed to a final inspection of the watch according to the watch manufacturer’s quality criteria.

When winding the watch, turn the crown slowly until you meet resistance. Try to wind your watch at the same time every day. Learn to wind slowly and feel the resistance as it becomes fully wound. Clean your water-resistant watch regularly with a damp cloth and dry it gently with a soft cloth like chamois or bring it by our store for a steam clean and polish. Avoid putting your watch near magnetic fields, such as a computer screen, TV, clock radio, even magnetic closures on handbags. Always check to make sure the crown is fully pushed in against the case, especially when swimming. If your watch has persistent condensation under the crystal, take it in to be checked immediately. Wear your watch! A mechanical watch thrives on motion to keep its lubricants in place and working. To avoid damage to an automatic watch, place it on a watch winder when you’re not wearing it. Even quartz movements should be handled with similar care. For instance, when the battery runs down, make sure you have the watchmaker change to a new one as soon as possible. A flat battery can damage the movement.

...there will be fewer problems to be fixed with a watch if it is maintained on a daily basis.
