HER INSPIRATIONS Clarkson (right, with Blackstock in September) credits her happy family life with her husband and kids (left in December 2016 and above in April) for allowing her to create her new album Meaning of Life. “A lot of these songs you have to have lived for you to be able to sing them,” she says.

TEDDY GEIGER

A POP STAR IS TRANSITIONING

“The next step is to tell all y’all,” Geiger (in May and inset, onstage in April 2013) wrote on Instagram.

Hit-making singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger came out as transgender and is transitioning. On Oct. 27, Geiger, 29, wrote in an Instagram post when a fan asked about the musician’s changing appearance, “I am transitioning. I started talking about it with a couple of my close friends and family about a month ago and it’s given me the courage to start the process . . . Love it or hate, this is who I have been for a looooong time.” (A rep for Geiger did not respond when asked which pronoun the singer prefers.) Geiger was discovered on VH1’s 2004 reality competitionIn Search of the Partridge Family (and later reportedly dated costar Emma Stone), then scored a Top 40 hit with the 2006 single “For You I Will (Confidence).” Today Geiger focuses on songwriting, crafting hits for One Direction and Shawn Mendes, who wrote “love you” to the star after he came out as trans. Hours after posting, Geiger thanked followers for receiving “so much love,” writing, “I have the best friends.” —JEFF NELSON

she’d get better parts in her school musicals if she was thinner. And she recently told Attitude magazine, “When I was really skinny, I wanted to kill myself. I was miserable, like, inside and out, for four years of my life. But no one cared, because aesthetically you make sense.” But at her recent iHeartRadio album-release party in L.A., Clarkson clarified those comments had more to do with having to smile through the “arranged marriage” of her first post-Idol record deal and the stresses of her career rather than feeling suicidal: “People are always pushing us, but we’re also pushing ourselves and you don’t

really know your limits until it’s too late sometimes.” But life quieted down in 2013 when she started a family in Nashville with music manager Brandon Blackstock, 40. “My level of self-empowerment grew to another level,” she says of becoming stepmom to her husband’s two kids from a previous marriage (Savannah, 16, and Seth, 10) and welcoming daughter River Rose, 3, and son Remington Alexander, 1. “I feel sexy and far more intelligent and wiser when making decisions—not just for myself but for my children,” she says. And Clarkson says she’s doing her best to impart her wisdom—and her confidence—to her kids. “Social media can be just horrible. It’s like junior high on steroids, but I try and be an example for Savannah and our other three kids,” she says. “I just say, ‘You see all this stuff that gets said about me all the time? Just brush it off. Just worry about your own path, your own front porch, and everyone else can worry about theirs,’ ” she continues. “It’s a shame that you have to teach that, but it’s an important lesson to learn: to let go of the things you can’t control.” —PATRICK GOMEZ

“We learn from each other all the time,” says Jenner, who spoke at the WWD Apparel & Retail CEO Summit in N.Y.C. on Oct. 24, of her family (left, at a 2016 Kanye West fashion show).

Ten years after Keeping Up with the Kardashians launched your family empire, how do you draw a line between parenting and managing? I’m always Mom first. I love my kids more than anything, and it gives me such joy to see that they’re following the path they love. And they’re all reeally smart kids with amazing work ethics. a That makes my job T heaven because I h don’t have to babysit d anybody. They’re a teelling me, “Let’s do more. Faster. Bigger.” m How H do you run a family like you run fa a business? There’s a different T CEO of my family C

Or Khloé will be the CEO of the family because she’s organizing a family vacation. Do you think there will ever be backlash from Kar-Jenner oversaturation? We are kind of everywhere, so there is a possibility that there is an oversaturation. But so far we’re doing okay. I don’t know, maybe I’ll get sick of myself. But for the most part we’re gung ho and try to make the most of what we have. Do you ever plan to retire? I don’t. Being busy and working hard is instrumental in a long, healthy life. It’s important for your mind, body and spirit.

Spacey set off more controversy by addressing his sexuality for the first time, saying, “I choose now to live as a gay man.” Said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis: “Coming-out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault.” Gay celebrities including George Takei, Zachary Quinto and Wanda Sykes also slammed Spacey: “You don’t get to ‘choose’ to hide under the rainbow,” wrote Sykes. —ALE RUSSIAN

Growing up, Ricky Gervais never imagined he’d be rich or famous. “There was almost a nobility in poverty,” the U.K. native, 56, says of his blue-collar upbringing. “Before college I was a laborer. Having dirt and grease on my hands was much more of a buzz than me going, ‘I’m an actor.’ ” After a stint in an ’80s pop band, Gervais went on to create The Office, which became a huge hit and spawned a U.S. spinoff. The Emmy winner, now on his Humanity stand-up comedy tour, opens up to People’s editorin-chief, in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview, about sudden fame, hosting the Golden Globes and why he doesn’t care if his jokes offend anyone. It’s been seven years since you last did stand-up. Why now? I always thought stand-up was the second or third string to my bow. I thought I was a writer, director or actor . . . now it’s my favorite thing. I just wander on stage with some notes and talk to the audience. It’s organic and it’s real. It’s my best. Why did you call it the Humanity tour? It was time for me to tell people what an awful species we are! But the meta-gag is me complaining about the world from the most privileged position imaginable. It’s about me being spoiled, [yet] so many things still annoy me. Is it tricky to say things that people are actually going to be offended by, which is part of the fun of Ricky Gervais? If you do it intelligently, there’s nothing you shouldn’t joke about. . . . It’s how you do it. I go to the most taboo places because I think that’s my job in a way. And as I’ve gotten older,

I got old people’s rights. I can say whatever I want, and I don’t care. Politics is so crazy right now in the States. It’s so divided. Have you seen that reflected in your audiences? I haven’t, but I don’t get very political. If you’re relying on the audience agreeing with you or not to get a laugh, that loses something comedically. At some point you decided you wanted to be a pop star. I saw David Bowie perform “Heroes” on TV when I was about 16. I thought, “I want to do that!” After my failed music career, I got a normal job in an office. I worked my way up from reception to manager of a big union building in London. The Office was based on that. How was the early success? Weird. It seemed to happen overnight, even though I was 40. I feared it a bit. I didn’t want to be lumped in with people who do anything to be famous. Do you want to host the Globes again? One day, yeah. There are things in the news that make me go, “I wish I was doing the Globes tonight.” The first time they said, “Why is he saying these awful things to these lovely rich people?” Now everyone knows I was right.

SHERRI PAPINI ABDUCTION MYSTERY Police release suspect sketches and new DNA evidence in the puzzling case of a young California mom of 2 who vanished for 22 days. Inside the search for answers

COUNTERCLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: WENN; FBI(2)

TAKEN AND RETURNED

W SUSPECTS AT LARGE

Sherri told detectives she never got a clear look at her captors’ faces because the two Hispanic female suspects (in police sketches) “made efforts to conceal their identities with face coverings.” And, says the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, “Sherri would keep her head down when in their presence to avoid being battered by them.”

Sherri (left, with Keith) told police that on day 22 of her ordeal, she heard her captors arguing and the sound of a gunshot in a nearby room. The younger suspect then took Sherri away by car, leaving her near I-5.

hen California Highway Patrol officers found Sherri Papini near an on-ramp of Interstate 5 last Thanksgiving morning, the physical distress of the Redding mother of two was vivid and unmistakable. Dressed in sweats, Sherri, then 34, was 150 miles south of where she had gone missing 22 days earlier and was bound at the waist by a chain to which her left wrist was tethered with a zip tie. Hose clamps were fixed to her ankles in what the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office later described as “pain compliance restraints.” What medical personnel found when Sherri was next taken to Woodland Memorial Hospital seemed to testify to her ordeal. Her right shoulder bore the burn marks of a crude brand, and her body was battered all over. “She had bruises in various stages of healing,” the sheriff’s office said in an internal October statement obtained by People, “indicating she had been physically assaulted multiple times over a period of time.” It’s been a year since Sherri’s husband, Keith, dialed 911 on the afternoon of Nov. 2, 2016, to report her missing. Authorities, who say they combed through more than 600 tips, are finally releasing details of the case that has mystified both law enforcement detectives and crime watchers who were transfixed by last year’s national headlines about the young mom who vanished while out for a morning jog. Police sketches of the two female abductors Sherri described to police were made public on Oct. 25, along with the most complete recitation to date of the evidence investigators have compiled over 12 months, including the audio of Keith’s 911 call and the fact that both female and male DNA evidence was recovered from Sherri’s clothing PEOPLE November 13, 2017

FAMILY REUNITED

“My Sherri suffered tremendously,” Keith (with Sherri and, from left, Tyler and Violet) said last year, describing his reaction to the sight of her injuries as “overwhelming nausea as my eyes and hands scanned her body.”

‘THAT SHE’S HAD DIFFICULTY BEING AROUND STRANGERS SAYS IT ALL’ —FORMER REDDING MAYOR MISSY MCARTHUR

The Sherri Papini Abduction Mystery: A Timeline NOV. 2, 2016 Sometime between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sherri Papini, who is reportedly training for a 5K charity run, takes her cell phone and earbuds and heads out on a jog in her Redding, Calif., neighborhood.

48

NOV. 2, 2016 5:51 p.m. Keith Papini, Sherri’s husband, arrives home. The house is empty, Sherri has not responded to texts, and she has not picked their young children up from daycare. Using his Find My iPhone app, he tracks Sherri’s phone to a location about a mile from their home, where he finds the phone and her earbuds on the side of the road.

and body. And yet, despite a year of what Sgt. Brian Jackson of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office calls “weekly contact with the Papinis” and “off-andon-type interviews” with Sherri, authorities admit they have little new to go on. Because of her poor recollection, Sherri has produced information only “in pieces,” the sheriff’s office says. Her spotty memory—combined with inconsistencies in her account—has only deepened suspicions and raised questions on true-crime Internet sites where armchair detectives debate the specifics of the case. “If it was truly an abduction, I am concerned for the people of Shasta County,” says Trudy Nickens, founder of the Nor Cal Alliance for the Missing, which organized last year’s mas-

sive civilian search for Sherri. “Why would it take a year to release a composite of the presumed kidnappers? I don’t understand it.” For their part the Papinis have kept quiet and out of the public eye. In a statement Keith thanked “all of the many people who have publicly and privately supported us over the last year, [whose] well-wishes have helped beyond measure,” and said he hopes the new information released by police will lead to the swift capture of Sherri’s kidnappers. Beyond that, he begged for privacy for them and their children—son Tyler, 5, and daughter Violet, 3—“as Sherri continues to heal and we work towards putting our lives back together.” On these facts, Sgt. Jackson and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office are definitive: Sherri resurfaced after 22 days badly battered, with her long

hair chopped short. She said she had not been sexually assaulted in captivity, and her medical exam confirmed as much. Yet-unidentified male DNA was found on Sherri’s clothing, which was given to her by her captors. Unknown female DNA was collected from a swab of Sherri’s body. Prior to her disappearance, Sherri had been texting with a “male acquaintance” in the Detroit area about meeting while he was due to be in California on business days before she went missing. “We went to Michigan and ruled him out as having any part in her disappearance,” Jackson says. As for whether Sherri and the man did meet last fall, Jackson says they did not. But he won’t address speculation that the two may have had a romantic relationship. “We aren’t ready to release that,” he says, adding of the mystery man, “It was a prior contact that she had years before. Somebody she met and kept in contact with.” As far as Keith’s involvement goes, police say he submitted to a polygraph test that found “no deception” and has volunteered for additional lie-detector tests. “Detectives utilized all resources to determine if Sherri Papini’s disappearance was voluntary or involuntary,” the sheriff’s office said. “The investigation is still continuing.” The puzzles that remain? For starters, a motive. There was never a demand for ransom, and Jackson says initial speculation about a sex-trafficking abduction has been dismissed by Shasta County police. Joe Giacalone, a retired New York Police Department sergeant and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, agrees. “I wouldn’t buy the sex-trafficking thing. Those guys are professionals. Putting her in the car, letting her go on the side of a highway—none of it adds up,” says Giacalone. As for Bill Garcia, the San Diego private investigator who worked pro bono for the Papini family

NOV. 2, 2016 7:51 p.m. Keith calls 911 to report Sherri missing. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office launches an extensive investigation, looking into the Papinis’ personal life and canvassing the area for witnesses or video surveillance.

NOV. 7, 2016 Keith takes a polygraph and passes. Police say, “No deception is indicated about [his involvement] with Sherri’s disappearance.”

in the search last year, one discrepancy that has since emerged nags at him. On his 911 call Keith said he had found Sherri’s phone on the ground along her jogging route—with torn pieces of her hair tangled in the headphones as if she had been grabbed. “If she was forcibly taken,” asks Garcia, “why were her earbuds rolled up in a little coil and placed on top of her phone?” Detectives also still struggle to identify what they call the “obscure letters” branded on the back of Sherri’s right shoulder. And they have no explanation for why Sherri told an FBI forensic interviewer that at one point she fought back against her younger captor—slamming the woman’s headinto the toilet in an altercation that left Sherri with a cut on her foot—and yet hospital photos from the day of Sherri’s recovery show no evidence of a cut, although it could have healed. “That could be construed as inconsistent,” says

NOV. 24, 2016 Around 4 a.m. Motorist Alison Sutton spots Sherri near Interstate 5 in Yolo County and calls 911. Sherri is wearing restraints, is covered in bruises and is branded on her right shoulder.

A HUSBAND QUESTIONED

Keith (making a TV appeal during last year’s search) was investigated and given a polygraph, the sheriff’s office says, with no evidence found against him.

Jackson. “If there is no clarification [from Sherri], we take it for what it is worth and go on with the investigation.” As for his own gut, Jackson points out that he was one of the first to interview Sherri last year. “There is no information that would indicate it’s not true,” he says. “I have invested almost a year of my career in this case, and we will continue on until we get some answers and hopefully get some people in custody soon.”

‘STILL HEALING’ McArthur, who had the Papinis to her home after Sherri was recovered, described her as suffering from trauma: “Her psyche was really damaged from the horrific experience she went through.”

For all the unanswered questions, those closest to

Burning Questions 1 | Why would Sherri have been taken and then released? Sgt. Brian Jackson of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office says police haven’t found a motive for her abduction. “It is hard to keep someone in captivity for 22 days,” he says. “Why would someone go to that length?” Adds San Diego private investigator Bill Garcia: “I don’t know of anyone who would go through that amount of effort to gain so little.” 2 | Why was there no ransom request? “I think that is what is really perplexing the police,” says Joe Giacalone, a retired New York City police sergeant

and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, who is not connected to the case. “There is no rhyme or reason for [the kidnappers’] never making a request for money.” 3 | Why did it take nearly a year to produce suspect sketches? Though police worked closely with Sherri after she was located last Nov. 24, they say it took time for her to come to a place in her recovery to work with a sketch artist. 4 | Will a DNA hit solve this case? “I am holding out for that,” says Sgt. Jackson. “Nothing has come back yet, but when it does, that will be a good day.”

the case are as certain that Sherri was brutally victimized as they are of her great fortune to have somehow survived. Missy McArthur, who was mayor of Redding at the time Sherri disappeared, metwithher andKeithshortlyafterSherri’s homecoming—just the three of them, at McArthur’s home. “She was really afraid of people and strangers,” McArthur says. “She wanted to be right next to Keith. I think their relationship is real, and hopefully it can withstand this kind of trauma. They are a team and were at that time. I just believe them both.” And then there’s the most fundamental fact: “She was beat to a pulp,” says McArthur. “You don’t do that kind of thing to your—RET. NYPD SGT. self. I absolutely believe JOE GIACALONE she was kidnapped.” Even Garcia, the P.I. so uneasy about the coiled earbuds, says the open questions haven’tchangedhisbottomline.“Ithinkitwasreal, just based on what I saw. There didn’t seem to be tension between Sherri and her husband.” Friends of the Papinis’ also say that no one outside of Sherri and Keith truly understands the horror of what she has faced. “Society crucified her and made her out to be a horrible person when she is a victim in the entire thing,” says Lisa Jeter, a friend of the couple’s. “I just would like people to leave her alone and let them heal. ” But for Nickens, her community’s sense of safety hangs in the margin. “If we had a young woman jogging on a road in Shasta County abducted in broad daylight, how can this not be a public-safety issue? I have five daughters under the age of 22,” Nickens says. “If it did not really happen the way it was presented, the citizens of Shasta County should know.”

Important Legal Notice from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida

If you are a current or former owner or lessee of certain Honda and Nissan vehicles, you could get cash and other benefits from a class action settlement. Si desea recibir esta notificación en español, llámenos o visite nuestra página web.

Settlements have been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging that consumers sustained economic losses because they purchased or leased vehicles from various auto companies that manufactured, distributed, or sold vehicles containing allegedly defective airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation and its affiliates. The Settlements include certain vehicles made by Honda and Nissan (the “Subject Vehicles”). Honda and Nissan deny any and all allegations of wrongdoing and the Court has not decided who is right. If you have already received a separate recall notice for your Honda or Nissan vehicle and have not yet had your Takata airbag repaired, you should do so as soon as possible. When recalled Takata airbags deploy, they may spray metal debris toward vehicle occupants and may cause serious injury. Please see your original recall notices and www.AirBagRecall.com for further details. Am I included in the proposed Settlements? The Settlements include the following persons and entities: • Owners or lessees, as of September 19, 2017, of a Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, and • Former owners or lessees of a Honda Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, who, between November 11, 2008 and September 19, 2017, sold or returned pursuant to a lease, a Subject Vehicle that was recalled before September 19, 2017, or • Former owners or lessees of a Nissan Subject Vehicle that was distributed for sale or lease in the United States or any of its territories or possessions, who, between April 11, 2013 and September 19, 2017, sold or returned pursuant to a lease, a Subject Vehicle that was recalled before September 19, 2017. A full list of the Honda and Nissan Subject Vehicles can be found at www.AutoAirbagSettlement.com. The Settlements do not involve claims of personal injury. What do the Settlements provide? Honda and Nissan have agreed to Settlements with a combined value of approximately $703 million, including a 10% credit for the Nissan Rental Car/Loaner Program and a 20% credit for the Honda Enhanced Rental Car/Loaner Program. The Settlement Funds will be used to pay for Settlement benefits and cover the costs of the Settlements over an approximately four-year period. The Settlements offer several benefits for Class Members, including (1) payments for certain out-of-pocket expenses incurred related to a Takata airbag recall of a Subject Vehicle, (2) a Rental Car/Loaner Program while certain Subject Vehicles are awaiting repair, (3) an Outreach Program to maximize completion of the recall remedy, (4) additional cash payments to Class Members from residual settlement funds, if any remain, and (5) a Customer Support Program to help with repairs associated with affected Takata airbag inflators and their replacements. The Settlement website explains each of these benefits in detail. How can I get a Payment? You must file a claim to receive a payment during the first four years of the Settlements. If you still own or lease a Subject Vehicle, you must also bring it to an authorized dealership for the recall remedy, as directed by a recall notice, if you have not already done so. Visit the website and file a claim online or download one and file by mail. The deadline to file a claim will be at least one year from the date the Settlements are finalized and will be posted on the website when it’s known. What are my other options? If you do not want to be legally bound by the Settlements, you must exclude yourself by January 8, 2018. If you do not exclude yourself, you will release any claims you may have against Honda and Nissan, in exchange for certain settlement benefits. The potential available benefits are more fully described in the Settlements, available at the settlement website. You may object to the Settlements by January 8, 2018. You cannot both exclude yourself from, and object to, the Settlements. The Long Form Notices for each Settlement available on the website listed below explain how to exclude yourself or object. The Court will hold a fairness hearing on February 7, 2018 to consider whether to finally approve the Settlements and a request for attorneys’ fees of up to 30% of the total Settlement Amount and incentive awards of $5,000 for each of the Class Representatives. You may appear at the fairness hearing, either by yourself or through an attorney hired by you, but you don’t have to. For more information, including the relief, eligibility and release of claims, in English or Spanish, call or visit the website below.

asha Fuiava had never sailed a day in her life when her friend Jennifer Appel asked her to join her on a 2,700-mile sailing trip across the equator, from their home base in Honolulu to Tahiti. “Everyone thought I was crazy,” says Fuiava, 26. Adds Appel, 48, who’d been planning the trip on her 37-ft. boat the Sea Nymph for the past two years: “She just said, ‘Okay, sounds like an adventure!’ ” An adventure, they say, that would soon become a fight for survival. A few days after they’d set sail on May 3—with Appel’s two dogs, Zeus and Valentine, a year’s worth of supplies and two water purifiers on board—their boat was rocked, the women say, by a massive storm. As a result, they say, their engine flooded, the mast was damaged, and their communication capabilities were all but severed. “It was very depressing and hopeless,” says Appel. “The fear was the worst part.” At one point, the women say, the boat was attacked by a group of tiger sharks that repeatedly pounded the hull as if trying to capsize them. “I was on my knees praying that we would hold together,” says Appel. “I’ve never been so scared in my whole life.” Finally, on Oct. 25, a Taiwanese fishing boat spotted them 900 miles off the coast of Japan— nearly 5,000 miles off their original course—and

I knew we were going to live.” Meanwhile, some have questioned details of the women’s story, including why they never activated the ship’s Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). A Coast Guard spokesman told the AP that the women had told him they never felt they were “truly in distress, like in a 24-hour period they were going to die.” Also, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told People it has no record of the May storm the women said they endured. Still, Fuiava and Appel say they are grateful to be alive—and hope to be back at sea again soon. “We learned that we love the ocean,” says Appel, “and that we can persevere past the limits of what we thought was tolerable.”

Justin Hartley knows a thing or two about getting emotional. So it’s perhaps no surprise that when he first met his bride-to-be Chrishell Stause, he followed his heart. The couple tied the knot beneath a canopy of trees at Malibu’s Calamigos Ranch on Oct. 28, four years to the day after they first met. It has long been an auspicious date on Stause’s calendar: “I texted my friend the next day, ‘I found him,’ ” she recalls. The feeling was highly mutual. “I knew right away she was the one,” Hartley says. “I think it was meant to be.” Now, as Stause walked down an aisle blanketed with pink and white rose petals, she stopped to embrace Hartley’s 13-year-old daughter, Isabella, before reaching the altar. “She’s been such an amazing part of our relationship,” Stause says, and it showed. “It was really sweet and very touching,” says one guest who became mistyeyed. As Hartley, 40, and Stause, 36, exchanged handwritten vows before 75 guests—including Hartley’s tightknit TV family, Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Chrissy Metz and Sterling K. Brown—the tears were soon flowing. “Chrishell was crying and

Justin was so moved,” says the guest. Afterward guests sat down in a “rustic, romantic” outdoor dining area, with chandeliers hanging from the trees and pale pink peonies adorning the tables, for a meal of roast chicken and prime rib (plus a signature whiskey cocktail). The couple did their first dance to The Contours’ “Do You Love Me,” and later, Hartley shared a father-daughter dance with Isabella to Taylor Swift’s “The Best Day.” “The whole wedding was really centered around how Bella and Chrishell are the two women in Justin’s life,” says a friend. “[They] were saying Chrishell was the last puzzle piece for their family to be complete. It was awesome to see how the three of them are such a tight-knit unit.” Hartley and Stause danced into the night alongside Justin’s costars Brown and Metz, goofed around in a custom photo booth and served up late-night mini-burgers and grilled cheese. “The wedding exceeded anything I could have ever imagined,” Stause says. “They don’t make them any better than Justin, and I could not be more thrilled to officially be Mrs. Hartley!” Mr. Hartley certainly agrees. “At the risk of sounding cheesy, I look forward to sharing life experiences and growing old together. Someday, we can talk about all the things we did together 30 years ago!”

Performing on Broadway was a rush. The applause coming over the footlights was like a tsunami in slow motion. The crash after the show, I assure you, is just as intense. Let’s just say that post show I had a sort of habit of sex serving as a night cap. I was Cleopatra, Pam Grier, Marilyn Monroe, and Jezebel rolled into one. For me, nothing could extend the thrill of a standing ovation like great sex with a gorgeous guy. New York City in the early 1980s was a gritty, sometimes dangerous place. In 1984 Lewis was almost raped by a man who’d posed as a messenger and entered her apartment with a knife. In what she calls the “performance of my life,” Lewis thwarted the rape by claiming she had a venereal disease. “I shouldn’t be doing this!” [the attacker said.] “Especially to a sister. They locked me up for some s--- I didn’t do! I just got out.” Suddenly I saw how skinny, fragile, and vulnerable this kid was. I sat down next to him and put my arm around his shoulder. “I’m sorry that happened to you. I will help you. Let me give you my number and you can call me.” “I’m sorry. I know you are gonna tell, but I just want you to know I am sorry.” He was not evil. He was just f----d up. He left and I stood in shock. Then I fell to my knees and fainted. 66

As the years passed, her undiagnosed bipolar symptoms worsened, and by 1989 she was heavily self-medicating with alcohol in addition to sex. Eventually she sought help, and her therapist Rachel diagnosed her as having bipolar disorder. Had she said, “you’re crazy,” I would have agreed. I had been crazy all my life. When she said, “mental illness,” I thought, b----, you crazy. I associated mental illness with people who couldn’t function, with straitjackets. I certainly knew what a depressive mood was, but this other “manic” part was new. When Rachel explained the details, I gasped. You mean, there is a name for describing why I talk fast and walk fast and rage, create drama, and speed when I drive a car? Compulsive, you say? The doodling, the braiding and unbraiding my hair? The arguing with people and storming off? Kicking s---, throwing s---? Yeah, okay, I guess all of that describes me. Rachel also helped her come to terms with her sex addiction. Just as alcoholism isn’t really about the liquor, my addiction wasn’t really about the sex. It was about theunresolvedpsychological problems that caused me pain. Sex was simply my painkiller. Lewis initially resisted medication. “I am Jenifer MothaF---in’ Lewis, you aren’t going to turn me into a zombie.” But eventually she realized it could help her. A.J. JACOBS

Tracking Down My Famous Cousins THE AUTHOR DISCOVERED THAT HIS FAMILY TREE IS JAM-PACKED WITH STARS. AND GUESS WHAT? YOURS IS TOO!

Olivia Munn

For the past several years author A.J. Jacobs has been working with scientists to assemble a big family tree. Really big. More of a forest. It now connects 260 million people in more than 60 countries, including everyonefrom BeyoncétoDonaldTrump.Yes, allinthe same big family. Soon, using DNA and the power of the Internet, Jacobs and his fellow researchers hope to connect every human on earth. Jacobs wrote about the quest in his new book, It’s All Relative: Adventures Up and Down the World’s Family Tree. Here are five things he learned:

1/ We all have black sheep, and that’s a good thing.

with Olivia Wilde

When I interviewed actress Olivia Munn, I told her she had a horse-thieving sixth-great-grandpa. She didn’t seem upset. “I think it’s awesome. You need a badass in the family,” she said. I agree. Everyone has rotten apples, and it makes you realize we should be less judgmental.

‘We all share 99.9 percent of our DNA. We should focus on the enormous amount we have in common’ —A.J. JACOBS

The More, the Merrier Jacobs and the Duggar family are distantly related.

5/ We’re all related.

2/ At least one of your ancestors is a Neanderthal. And it’s nothing to be ashamed of. This extinct species wasn’t so dumb. In fact, they had the gift of speech. Scientists say Neanderthals had a highpitched raspy voice, much like Julia Child. Most of us have about 3 percent Neanderthal DNA, meaning our great-great-great-(repeat 2,000 times)-grandparents were in a mixed marriage: One was human, the other Neanderthal.

3/ The World Family Tree is the ultimate social network. You want to meet someone? Just figure out how they are related to you. It worked for me, even when the link was almost absurdly distant. I wanted to interview former President George H.W. Bush about his family. I was told he wasn’t doing interviews. But I explained that I was related (he’s my first cousin once removed’s husband’s third-great-grandmother’s third-great-nephew). Next thing you know, I’m chatting up the President over a hamburger lunch.

I was surprised to find I’m not just Jewish but also part Arab—the Middle East conflict in the flesh. As Henry Louis Gates says, “There’s no such thing as racial purity.” The average African-American has 24 percent European ancestry. And white Americans taking DNA tests are finding diversity in their genes. This is disturbing to some white supremacists but a good thing for rational people. 76

How to Find Your Famous Cousins Online family trees can be found at genealogy websites like geni .com. Enter names and birth dates of some relatives and ancestors, then enter celebs you’re curious about in the search box. If they’re on the tree (over 100 million people are), you’ll see how you’re related. Hello, 10th cousin Abe Lincoln!

In the past few years, we seem to be more tribal than ever. We’re obsessed with us-versus-them thinking. Blue state vs. Red state. Americans vs. foreigners. Black vs. white. Patriots fans vs. everyone else. I’m no exception. At the dinner table with my kids, I’ve found myself ranting about the idiots who don’t agree with me. But then, a few years ago, I stumbled across a group of scientists working on a remarkable quest: creating a Global Family Tree uniting all of humankind—all seven billion cousins on earth. A tree built using millions of DNA tests and historians and genealogists. It’s a crazy ambitious project. And it’s got huge implications. The still-in-progress Global Family Tree is already helping scientists track diseases and develop cures. It’s changing the way we understand history and culture, race and ethnicity. And maybe, just maybe, a Global Family Tree will nudge us to treat our distant cousins a little more kindly. Or at least less awfully. On a personal level, I used to despise Judge Judy, whom I found an obnoxious loudmouth. Then I discovered she’s my eighth cousin, and my heart softened. “Oh, that’s just cousin Judy,” I said to myself. “She’s just doing her shtick.”

4/ We are all mutts.

“My family got a little jealous,” says Jacobs (with wife Julie and, from top, sons Zane, Jasper and Lucas). “You’re spending time with your 17th cousins— what about us?”

You and I share an ancestor. I’m not sure which ancestor. Perhaps a seamstress in a Polish village. Perhaps a goat farmer intheEuphratesvalley.Perhaps we’d have to go all the way back to the real Adam and Eve—our 8,000th great-grandparents. Everyone on earth has a bit of their DNA—you, Miley Cyrus, the guy who took your parking space at Chipotle. Everyone. It’s a simple fact—but one I’d forgotten.

My father was a successful businessman, went to New York for work in 1978 and told my mom to bring my sister and me to visit during our winter break. We packed for two weeks, but we stayed for the rest of our lives.

Dealing with Typecasting Doing school plays, I got to play all kinds of characters. But when I started acting in Hollywood, every third or fourth audition was for a terrorist. I took a few of those roles but finally said, “No more.” When 24 called, I said no, but then they told me the character changes his mind halfway through. Still, for the past 15 years I haven’t done any terrorist roles.

On Superior Donuts I play an Iraqi businessman. We debated whether the character should have an accent; I thought it was important that he did, because if you don’t know any Middle Easterners and he makes you laugh, that endears you to people from that background. In my book I’m Not a Terrorist, But I’ve Played One on TV and in my stand-up, I’ve always shown how much Americans have in common with those from the Middle East. my 15th birthday was going to be my last,” she says. “You know when you’re fading away, and I just knew.” But three months later, Arlen regained control of her eyes. “From there it was miracle after miracle,” she says of feeling returning to the top half of her body. In 2016, after years of intense physical therapy, Arlen took her first unassisted steps in eight years. “I’d never choose what happened to me, but I’d never change it,” she says. “It’s my tragic, beautiful journey.” One of four siblings raised in New Hampshire, Arlen was an athletic kid who “never got sick,” she says. But at age 11 her health began deteriorating. At first experiencing frequent colds followed by numbness in her feet, she ended up in the hospital unable to move. (It would be years before she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, two autoimmune conditions that cause inflammation of the spinal cord and brain.) “My nerves were dying. I watched my body shut down,” she says. She has no memory of the following two years; when she first began to regain consciousness she remained immobile. “I was scared,” says Arlen, who also had seizures. “I was suffering.” Arlen kept her mind busy by writing screenplays in her head and praying. Then the “miracles” began, in late 2009. (Her doctor, Michael Levy, a professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins, says only one third of TM patients recover as Arlen has.) Ready to make up for lost time, she set lofty goals: first winning gold as a swimmer at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, then defying doctors’ expectations by learning to walk again. That triumph allowed her to set her sights on DWTS. “This is the first year I’m not fighting to get back what was taken from me,” says Arlen, who still has no feeling in her legs. “This is the first year that I can finally just live —and I’m going to make it a full life.”

angry,” says New York City lawyer Frederick Allen, remembering his reaction to reports this past April of ongoing persecution against gay and bisexual citizens in Chechnya. Since then, Chechnyan officials have continued to imprison gay men, torturing them in facilities that are being compared to concentration camps—even pressuring locals to murder their gay relatives. “We take for granted how lucky we are in this country,” Allen, 34, says of being a gay American. “When the news broke, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.” So he decided to do something. In April, Allen launched a fund-raising campaign on Facebook, and within a month he’d raised more than $250,000. “I couldn’t believe it,” admits Allen, who donated the proceeds to Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian nonprofit that helps LGBTQ people around the world find safe haven from stateenabled violence. Thanks in large part to Allen’s contributions, Rainbow Railroad has helped more than 30 gay and bisexual men secretly escape from Chechnya to Canada. “I almost broke down when I heard,” says Allen, who emigrated with his family from Ukraine to the U.S. in 1987. “I realized how easily those funds translate to saving actual lives.”

Allen (with his mom in Ukraine in 1987) was 4 when his family came to the U.S. as Jewish refugees.

A MOTHER’S HEARTBREAK

MY SON WAS SHOT AT A SLEEPOVER

Ashlyn Melton’s son Noah was killed by a teen with an unsecured gun. Now she’s trying to help other parents avoid tragedy By J E F F T R U E S D E L L

A TRAGIC LOSS

“Noah was my cuddle-andsnuggle baby,” says Melton (top right, at her son’s grave site, and with Noah and his sister Sydney in 2010). “I have no problem with taking a child hunting, taking a child shooting. But you teach them what they need to know, what they need to do, and you supervise them. You don’t leave the guns lying around.”

CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: NBC’S TODAY; COURTESY ASHLYN MELTON(2)

Ashlyn Melton didn’t think twice when her 13-year-

old son Noah asked to go to a sleepover at his best friend’s home in December 2011. But later that night she got a life-shattering phone call: Noah had been shot and killed while he and his 15-yearold pal were FaceTiming with classmates and the other boy picked up one of four unsecured guns in his room, police told her. “He was just showing off,” she says of the other teen. “It didn’t matter that Noah had been hunting since he was 3; it didn’t matter that Noah wouldn’t have done it. It matters that because somebody else wasn’t keeping their kid safe, mine died.” To ease her grief, Melton, 42, a bank loan officer in Plaquemine, La., has made it her life’s work to warn other parents about unsecured guns at home. Most kids under 18 killed unintentionally by firearms are shot by those their own age,

most often during play, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, which counted 82 such deaths between 2012 and 2014, its latest tally. Together with the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Melton now pushes the ASK Campaign—Asking Saves Kids—urging parents to ask if there are unlocked guns in homes where their children play. “If we change behaviors of gun owners,” says the Brady Campaign’s Kristin Brown, who will highlight the initiative at a Nov. 9 gala in New York City, “we will save lives.” A gun owner herself, Melton insists she’s not trying to take away guns; Noah grew up respecting generational traditions of hunting and shooting in her family, she says. “I’ve wrestled with forgiving,” Melton says of the other parents and their son, who was given five years’ probation after pleading guilty to unintentional negligence. “I can’t change what happened. But keeping the guns in a cabinet or drawer locked from children just seems like a —ASHLYN MELTON pretty commonsense thing to do.”

It’s fitting that in a year when women marched, spoke out and fought for change, Gal Gadot stormed screens as the world’s first female superhero. Her sword-swinging strength was a rallying call for women and girls, but Gadot says that’s only half the story. “I think you can’t only empower the women, you have to educate the men too,” says the Israeli-born star, 32. “For boys to go to the movies and see that women can be amazing and badass and strong and inspiring—I think that’s very, very important.” Gadot has a special appreciation for the first responders she met on the day of the People shoot, having served in the Israeli army for two years as a combat trainer. “They are the true heroes,” she says. “They’re the wonder women.” Air Force Capt. Staci Rouse loves the comic-book icon’s message “to be the best you can be for the world around you.” Adds ER nurse Kelly Lynch

Fighting for the World’s Kids “It is such a huge privilege,” says Gadot (with Nashagh, left, and Rouse) of military service.

Pink “I care about kids,” says the multiplatinum Grammy winner, 38, and mom to Willow, 6, and Jameson, 11 months, of the driving force behind her partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund. “UNICEF has helped more children around the world than anyone else, and in a humanitarian crisis, they’re there. [UNICEF USA President & CEO] Caryl is tireless—she is 50 humans inside of one body. She’s no BS, and yet her mission comes from love. . . . When I think about a mom not being able to feed a kid or make them feel safe, it breaks my heart. I subscribe to the idea that these kids are all of our kids. I want us all to help each other.” Caryl Stern “I wish we’d look at children by their age, not define them by their borders,” says Stern, 60. “Children do not get to pick where they’re born. They surely would not pick poverty or conflict if they did.” Fighting for the future of 50 million refugee kids, she’s inspired by her mom, 84, who escaped Nazi-occupied Austria at 6 years old, sailing to New York in the care of a woman she never saw again. “One woman saved her life,” says Stern, “and she said that we could be that person for someone else.” A UNICEF ambassador, Pink visited Haiti with Stern in 2015 to aid with hunger relief.

of seeing Gadot’s character resonate across the world: “It’s a great time to take charge of your future and know you’re no longer held back by your gender.” Next up, Gadot has two more Wonder Woman projects: Justice League, out Nov. 17, and a sequel slated for 2019. But that’s just the beginning. “There are so many more things I’d like to achieve,” she says. “I want to have more children. [She has daughters Alma, 6, and Maya, 7 months, with husband Yaron Versanor.] You can start having impact on your immediate environment. Be kind, listen, have goodwill. It has a ripple effect. I’ll start there.”

For Natalie Hampton, 17, lunchtime at her middle school was terrifying. “I was sitting alone every day being physically attacked and verbally bullied,” she says. After switching to a new school in ninth grade and quickly making friends, Hampton decided to help anyone who might be similarly struggling by designing the app Sit with Us, which helps connect students who are looking for others to share a table at lunch. The innovative idea is now being used by more than 100,000 people in eight different countries—and Hampton is thrilled. “I’m proud I was able to take a negative experience and turn it into something to help others,” she says.

A Legend Inspires the Next Generation “I’m gradually starting to realize this impact is bigger than I ever could have dreamed,” famed primatologist Jane Goodall says of dedicating her life to the study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees. Through Goodall’s groundbreaking work, she has proved that animals share feelings and emotions similar to those of humans. “When you’re brought into this life, you’re given certain gifts, and you have to use them,” Goodall says of her “strong constitution” (at 83, she still travels 300 days a year) and her strengths as a communicator. Today she is using those gifts to help educate younger generations about conservation and compassion through her program Roots & Shoots. “Its main message is that every single one of us makes a difference.” Roots & Shoots started in 12 countries and has already expanded to more than 98—and it isn’t done growing. “I want it to go everywhere.”

“We have to have hope— and we have to work harder to safeguard the future,” says Goodall.

25 WOMEN CHANGING THE WORLD GRETCHEN CARLSON

“We’re seeing this avalanche of women and men feeling comfortable to say ‘me too,’ ” says Carlson. “It gives me great optimism.”

Combating Sexual Harassment “It’s the ‘be fierce’ movement,” the former Fox & Friends host says of the message she shares in her new book about fighting sexual harassment. Her 2016 lawsuit against former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes led to his resignation and emboldened women in other industries to share their own stories. Carlson, 51, emphasizes that men who are aware of harassment must make it known “that they’re not going to tolerate it on behalf of women.”

WOMEN SPEAKING OUT Carlson is far from alone in the movement against sexual harassment and assault. From actress Rose McGowan to gymnast Rachael Denhollander, “it takes dozens of people speaking up to actually have people listen,” says business executive Ellen Pao, who was involved in a gender-discrimination case. “Seeing other people working together to push for change is really rewarding.”

“We’re strong,” McGowan said at the Women’s Convention on Oct. 27.

IRENE NKOSI

(UDGLFDWLQJ +,9 $,'6 Irene Nkosi was in her teens when she learned she was HIV positive during her second pregnancy. In her home country of South Africa, more than 5 million people are estimated to have HIV/AIDS, the largest number of infections in the world. In her conservative culture, Nkosi faced ostracism, but a nurse told her about Mothers2Mothers—a group that helps HIV-positive pregnant mothers prevent their babies from contracting the disease. “Mothers2Mothers saved my life,” says Nkosi, 32, who now counsels others facing the same hurdles and stigma. “We are not only educating the positive women, we also educate the HIVnegative women to stay negative,” she says.

“I am going to walk with them in this journey until they are empowered,” says Nkosi (teaching in 2016).

25 WOMEN CHANGING THE WORLD “I’ve been really impressed by what people are willing to tell me about their own experiences, because they feel like that story will help somebody else,” says Gounder (near Gallup, N.Mex., in October).

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS

5HGHÀQLQJ %HDXW\ As a kid, Tracee Ellis Ross hated her hair. “I didn’t see textured hair like mine in media, so I didn’t think it was beautiful,” says the Emmy nominee, 45. “I spent years trying to beat it into submission—to get it to be silky and straight. But as soon as I started to nurse my hair back to health, I started to nurse my soul back to health too.” Now, through her portrayal of Dr. Rainbow Johnson, a mother of five on black-ish, her size-inclusive JCPenney collection and empowering speeches at events like Beautycon, Ross hopes to spread the message that “beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin.”

“Conversations about hair can seem trivial,” says Ross. “But really they’re about the authentic self.”

CELINE GOUNDER

Bringing Health Care to All Celine Gounder was studying engineering when she realized she wanted to pursue a very different path. “Something clicked for me, the idea of working with underserved populations but leveraging science to do that in the form of medicine,” says the N.Y.C.-based epidemiologist, 40, who now hosts a podcast called In Sickness and in Health. “There’s a lot that can be done to make our health system better if we share stories,” says Gounder. After volunteering to fight Ebola in New Guinea, she’s traveling the U.S. on an “ill-health tour” to highlight pressing issues including opioid addiction, poverty and human trafficking. “These problems take a long time to solve. But when just one person says, ‘I never thought of it this way,’ that makes a big difference.”

Crusading for a Cure Lying in the hospital after her double mastectomy in 2012, Kathy Bates “felt weird pains” in her arms and hands. After her arms swelled up, the Oscar winner and breast cancer survivor, 69, was diagnosed with lymphedema, which is caused by a blockage in the lymph nodes and can lead to deadly sepsis. Bates was shocked to learn that 10 million Americans suffer from lymphatic issues, but many doctors aren’t required to learn much about the subject. “I was so pissed off,” says the Disjointed star, who is now the face of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network. “People need to be able to get treatment before they have to lose a limb—or their lives.”

Mental Health Awareness Discussions of mental health “can be very taboo, and I want to take that away,” says Demi Lovato, who has shared her own struggles with bipolar disorder and eating disorders. Teaming with Global Citizen and Save the Children, Lovato is promoting their Healing and Education Through the Arts (HEART) program in Iraq for kids affected by war and conflict. “I’m really looking forward to hopefully changing lives over there,” says the singer-songwriter, 25. In opening up about her personal battles, “I do feel the impact, because I’ve had fans come up to me and say that I’ve saved their lives.”

“It means the world to me,” Lovato says of hearing from those who say her openness has helped them.

BRENE BROWN

(PSRZHULQJ :RPHQ LQ 0LGOLIH Brené Brown has a knack for distilling social research in a way that resonates for women, particularly those in midlife. “Give up on the beer-commercial image of friends,” says the bestselling author, whose 2012 TED Talk on embracing vulnerability has been viewed more than 30 million times. “If you’ve got one or two people who see you, you are the luckiest person in the world.” The Texan and mom of two, 51, also offers practical advice for navigating family dynamics in polarized times. “I listen and I stay curious and I approach people with generosity,” says Brown, who counts Oprah Winfrey as a fan. “Generosity, curiosity, civility and boundaries is my combination. It takes balls of steel.”

98

November 13, 2017 PEOPLE

“True belonging is having the courage to stand alone,” says Brown. “I couldn’t do that until after my early 40s.”

When Ava DuVernay was little, her mom gave her sage advice: “If you try, and it doesn’t work out, you’re not a failure, you’re a risk taker.” Today the publicist turned Oscar-nominated director, 45, helps others take the leap through Array Now, which finds and funds films by women and people of color. She’s also the first black female director to head up a $100 million film, A Wrinkle in Time. “I want to lead by example,” says DuVernay, who employs all-female directors for her hit OWN Network drama Queen Sugar. “I refuse to believe the status quo.” (CHASTAIN) HAIR: AHN CO TRAN; MAKEUP: KATE LEE; STYLIST: ELIZABETH STEWART/THE WALL GROUP; TOP: GUCCI; (LOVATO) HAIR: CESAR RAMIREZ; MAKEUP: JILL POWELL; (DUVERNAY) SET DESIGN: WOODEN LADDER; (MOCK) BENJO ARWAS/CONTOUR BY GETTY IMAGES; (ALBA) DANI BRUBAKER/CONTOUR BY GETTY IMAGES; (BROWN) MAILE WILSON

Chastain (photographed with rescue animals and volunteers on Oct. 14) also works with fashion brands to create cruelty-free products.

JANET MOCK

Protecting LGBTQ Kids Before coming out as a transgender in her late teens, Janet Mock felt ashamed of who she was. “I struggled with speaking my truth,” says the TV host and New York Times bestselling author, 34. “But when I did, I became a part of a community.” Now she is working with organizations like the BreakOut! Youth Project in New Orleans and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project in New York City to “ensure that trans people and LGBTQ youth are protected, that they have the resources that they need, and that they have someone they can turn to in times of crisis. Right now I think our job is to gather together to tell different kinds of stories and to ensure thatt we are including the most marrginalized l d in our communities.”

“I want people to recognize that who we say we are is real,” says Mock.

J E S S I C A C H A S TA I N

Advocating for Animals Jessica Chastain doesn’t want people to pity her three-legged rescue dog Chaplin when they see him out on a walk. “He’s so excited to be going down the pavement, hopping along with the most joy you could ever see,” says the actress and Humane Society of the United States volunteer. The Oscar nominee, 40, has supported the group through its partnership with 200 school districts to bring plant-based menus into cafeterias. Chastain, who has “adopted every animal I’ve ever had,” is an outspoken advocate on social media who encourages other women to make their voices heard. “We’re in a time now where if there’s something that’s im ttantt tto you mpor portan you,, you you can can sspea peakk up u on your own platform.”

“It’s not easy to run something and to grind every day,” says Alba, but her kids give her focus. “I’m super grateful.”

“Anything other than inclusive is exclusionary,” says DuVernay of male-dominated Hollywood sets.

JESSICA ALBA

5XOLQJ WKH %RDUGURRP Her company’s global mission began as a more personal one for Jessica Alba. “My kids have the same allergies as I do,” says the mother of two, 36—she’s expecting her third baby this winter—who once went to the ER after a reaction to a hair product. In 2012 she founded the Honest Company, which has grown into a billion-dollar business empire of nontoxic household, baby and beauty products from an original line of just 17 products. “My goal is to make a positive impact,” she says. And when it comes to naysayers, “they’ve always motivated me to persevere. I surround myself with people who are much smarter than me, and I learn. I’m a sponge.” Photographs by (CHASTAIN) AMANDA MARSALIS; (LOVATO) KAT BORCHART; (DUVERNAY) KOURY ANGELO

KAREN SPENCER

%XLOGLQJ &RQQHFWLRQV IRU 9XOQHUDEOH &KLOGUHQ Karen Spencer’s lightbulb moment came when she was taking parenting classes with her first baby: What if there were a way to apply the same emphasis on connection to the world’s most vulnerable kids? So began Whole Child International, which teaches caregivers and government officials in developing countries how to create a more loving and nurturing environment for the children in their care. By making simple changes to emphasize connective relationships, WCI has seen huge health gains, including a 47 percent increase in children’s heights and a 37 percent increase in weight with no changes to diet. “Simply by ensuring that children have a quality primary-care relationship, they will grow stronger,” says Spencer, 45, a mom of three who is married to Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer. “My goal is to see supportive relationships at the center of all child care. We need to invest in building love and connection— and when we do, the world we live in will change for the better.”

When Lisa Heffernan burst into tears in the middle of the produce aisle after her son went away to college, she knew she wasn’t alone. Through their Grown and Flown website, Heffernan and fellow mom Mary Dell Harrington built an online community of more than 200,000 parents with older children. “These are the times when kids are making some of the most consequential decisions in their lives, and there was very little support,” says Heffernan, 58. Today group members share advice and tangible help like college scholarship donations. “We had no idea that it would blossom in the way it has, and that it would also lead to people getting together in real life and making a difference in each other’s lives,” says Harrington, 62.

25 WOMEN CHANGING THE WORLD “It’s a systemic problem, and I can’t turn anyone away,” says Quinn, “because I’m in a position to help.”

Feeding Families Uzo Aduba knew she was in for something special at her first Heifer International event. “It was the only red carpet I’d ever been to that had goats and chickens,” says the Orange Is the New Black star, 36. So Aduba decided to join forces with the organization, which aims to end world hunger by helping families gain self-reliance. “It’s the next step from teaching a man to fish,” Aduba says of Heifer’s practice of gifting families a calf as an income source and then asking that family to pay it forward by gifting their heifer’s first calf to another family in need. “It’s incredible to see how much their lives change.”

ZOE QUINN

7DFNOLQJ 2QOLQH+DWH The anonymous death and rape threats long ago stopped scaring video-game developer Zoë Quinn. “I’m used to it now,” says Quinn, 30, whose life was nearly destroyed after an ex-boyfriend’s angry blog post sparked a massive cyberbullying campaign against her in August 2014 that became known as #GamerGate. “Their plan,” she recalls, “was to get me to kill myself if they didn’t do it first.” Quinn not only survived, but today she helps others like her fight back against online harassment with her Crash Override Network website. “Ultimately what my harassers wanted was for me to go away,” she says, “but I’m not interested in doing that.”

SAM RAPOPORT

“Football is everything to me,” says Rapoport. “It’s my career, it’s how I met the majority of my friends, and it’s how I met my wife.”

The former quarterback got her start with the National Football League by making a Hail Mary pass to the hiring committee. “I sent a football with my résumé and wrote, ‘What other quarterback could accurately deliver a football 386 miles?’” Rapoport, 36, recalls. As the NFL’s director of football development, she is responsible for increasing opportunities for women in football operations. “I would love for girls growing up to believe that if they love the sport as much as I do, that they could be a part of it,” she says. Among the breakthroughs under her direction: The Buffalo Bills hired two female coaches, and the Minnesota Vikings added two female scouts. “Our goal is to normalize females on the sidelines,” she says. “That’s when we’ll know that we’ve started to achieve something.”

THE ACTOR, 25, STARS IN HULU’S NEW TIME-TRAVELING ACTION-COMEDY SERIES FUTURE MAN Last time I was injured I went wake surfing, and on my third try I went to stand up, and my knee snapped. I was just underwater like, “Ah, this hurts.” I got out thinking I would ice it for a bit and go for another run, but no, I actually tore my LCL.

Last road trip I was in Spain visiting my girlfriend [Claudia Traisac], and a buddy of mine came over. We rented motorcycles and drove like 1,000 kilometers all over the northern coast of Spain and through the mountains and the national parks. It was incredible.

Last thing I took from a set At one point my character in Future Man wears this ridiculously expensive white hoodie thing that no one should ever pay that much for. I don’t like to spend money on clothes, but around the house it’s super cozy. I would never wear it out in public.

Last time I got frustrated Recently, with Puerto Rico and everything that’s happening with the relief attempts and how slow we were to respond to our own American citizens—that was so frustrating. I don’t even know how to channel that into something productive. Everywhere I went [after the LCL tear], I had to wear this intense leg brace. My dad got married, and I had this great suit, but then I had to put the brace on top of it. It looked really stupid. Reported by Nicole Sands
