Like the 2014 movie, the sequel is actionpacked. Did you do all your own stunts? We learn all of the choreography, and we try everything; sometimes we come to a point where they say, “You’re not going to be able to do this, mate.” But I do most of it. The car chase is all me! What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about your new costar Channing Tatum? He’s great and funny! He filled my trailer with 20 sex dolls and some rather disturbingly large prosthetics. He spent some money on that prank for sure. It’s on-camera somewhere. You landed a lead film role very early in your career. What does your family think of your success? They’re hugely supportive. I’m not from an affluent background in any way....They gave me the money to audition for drama school. The success I’ve had still very much feels like my family’s success. BACK IN ACTION This is your 20th season on Dancing with the Stars. How have you grown since you joined the show as a pro in 2006? When I started, I couldn’t even do an interview. They had to teach me how to say short soundbites and bring my personality out. DWTS was like TV boot camp; that made me grow up a lot faster. I used to do whatever my dance coaches told me to do, but the show made me more open and willing to share my voice and opinions. How did you end up taking over for Abby Lee Miller on Dance Moms? [In March Miller abruptly quit the Lifetime show just weeks before being sentenced to a

year in prison following a bankruptcy fraud trial.] I’d had a meeting with one of the executives, and I got a call a few days later from my manager saying, “Abby walked off-set, and they’d love for you to take her place.” I was just thrown into it. How does your teaching style differ from Abby’s? I’m strict, but I don’t yell. I understand how these kids feel pressure living in the spotlight. I hope I helped them get ready for the real world and gave them things to work on, rather than criticizing how they look or other things they can’t change. You recently reunited with your ex-boyfriend, actor Matthew Lawrence, after almost a decade. Why does

it work this time around? If I had any regret in life, it was the end of our relationship. But when we first dated, we were both young and immature, and I was so new to this world. Now we are both adults and feel balanced. He’s such a great guy. He’s so normal, considering we’re in this crazy business. It’s so nice to be able to come home to him and turn Netflix on and order Postmates. He’s someone I definitely do see spending the rest of my life with.

Harry Dean Stanton Dies at 91 Nearly 60 when he became a star, the actor was unforgettable for decades, in everything from Alien to Big Love Like his friends Bob Dylan and the late Sam Shepard, actor Harry Dean Stanton, who died at 91 on Sept. 15 in L.A., always seemed like an iconic reminder of some lost, forlorn America—a filling station along an empty highway. Sharp-featured and lean, he perhaps found his greatest success as Roman Grant, the mean polygamist patriarch on HBO’s Big Love, but he gave memorable performances— gritty, sly, often mysterious—in more than 100 movies (Alien, The Green Mile, Pretty in Pink, Repo Man) and dozens of TV shows (including David Lynch’s recent Twin Peaks: The Return). The Kentucky native didn’t become famous until he was in his late 50s (long after his old roommate Jack Nicholson had) in the 1984 art-house film Paris, Texas. (One of his final projects, Lucky, is out Sept. 29.) He may have been, as he joked, “a late bloomer,” but Stanton was also so distinctive he became a cult favorite. Never married—he had a relationship with actress Rebecca De Mornay in the 1980s—he said in a 2013 interview that a bigger, more conventional career would have been nice. Emma Stone and Steve Carell face off in a smart entertainment about a legendary match COMEDY-DRAMA “Male chauvinist pig” isn’t a phrase you hear anymore, but in 1973 Bobby Riggs (Carell), a former tennis champ settled into a dull middle age, overnight became the most notorious one in all of America—he made it his calling card in challenging the great Billie Jean King (Stone) to the so-called Battle of the Sexes, a match that (Riggs claimed) would settle whether a woman could ever play as well as a man. The event, televised to a global audience from the Houston Astrodome, was a ridiculous spectacle—the opponents were carried onto the court like pharaohs—made ever larger by Riggs’s cheerfully ruthless skill at media topspin. To King, though, the stakes were dead-serious: It was time to put an end to all this sexist racket. The performances, along with the ﬁlm, are sharp, intelligent and a lot of fun.(Sept. 22, PG-13)

DRAMA Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jeff Bauman, the 27-year-old Costco worker who lost his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing: He had stationed himself at the ďŹ nish line to cheer on his girlfriend Erin (Orphan Blackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tatiana Maslany). Stronger isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just about his recovery but his gradual discovery of a new inner strength and maturity. This seems a bit unfair dramatically, as if it werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough for Bauman, whose suffering is depicted with wince-inducing effectiveness, to live and walkâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;he needs to wind up morally improved. Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a 24-year-old Muslim clerk, was sent from India to London in 1887 to add an exotic touchâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and a handsome reminder of empireâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;to a ceremonial event before the aging Queen Victoria (Judi Dench). She was captivated by him. He became a friend, conďŹ dant and adviser (both political and spiritual). To some degree an infatuation, he may also have been an unconscious substitute for her disappointing son Bertie (Eddie Izzard). Directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen), this is a delicate, autumnal story, with a touching performance by Dench. COMEDY Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to say much about season 2 of this ingenious comedyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;about a rotten soul (Kristen Bell) accidentally assigned to heaven in the afterlifeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;without giving away the twist that ended season 1. (People who spoil TV shows merit a frosty reception at the pearly gates.) Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say, then, that Michael (Ted Danson), designer and overseer of this corner of eternity, is compelled to reboot the projectâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and then reboot the reboot. Bell remains hyperarticulate about expressing displeasure. Along with Kate and Harry, William has focused a formidable spotlight on often stigmatized mental health issues through their charity campaign Heads Together, which will promote World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10. “There may be a time and a place for the ‘stiff upper lip,’ but not at the expense of your health,” he said earlier this year. In previous generations,“if you were anxious, it’s because you were weak. If you couldn’t cope with whatever life threw at you, it’s because you were failing. Gyllenhaal, but as he sat at an Italian restaurant in Boston waiting to meet Jeff Bauman, the real-life subject of his new movie Stronger, the actor felt a wave of anxiety about living up to the part. “Meeting Jeff was probably one of the most intimidating things I’ve done in my life,” he says. The ﬁlm—which follows Bauman’s recovery after he lost his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing—is the latest in a string of challenging roles for Gyllenhaal, 36. “I really wanted to go back and devote myself to my work,” he says of his conscious shift from heartthrob to (unusually good-looking) character actor in critical hits such as Nightcrawler and Nocturnal Animals. The L.A. native also stepped back from the spotlight after high-proﬁle relationships in his 20s (including with Kirsten Dunst, Reese Witherspoon and Taylor Swift). Now he’s ready to move into the next phase of his life. “I want to continue becoming more of an adult than I already am,” he says. “Hopefully with a family of my own.”

Why were you so nervous about meeting Jeff and telling his story?

I knew nothing I was going to do was going to come close to what he experienced. I just knew I was going to try as hard as I could. What he went through, what he goes through every day and who he has became as a result of that event—it’s beyond words. To try to portray that, I feel grateful, but I also felt a sense of pressure. I thought he was going to be like, “Can this guy do it?” Was there anything in your own life that you channeled to prepare?

I drew upon his experience more than I ever have in any other movie. Jeff and I have a lot of similarities, though, like the fact that both of our parents are divorced. I have a crazy family, he has a crazy family. But I think the hardest thing was realizing my own weaknesses. Realizing that in this situation, I probably wouldn’t be able to survive the way that he did. You’ve moved away from romantic comedies

I just wanted to do the things that I love. People always tell you, “You’ve got to get higher; you’ve got to do more.” I was in that mode for a while. Particularly being blessed to be able to work from such a young age, I got caught in that idea. But I started to realize that all the people I respect are the people who just follow their own voice, even if a lot of people don’t follow along initially. There were a number of people who said when I decided to do Brokeback Mountain, “Oh, you should never do that movie.” I don’t work with people who would say that to me. What’s been your biggest challenge?

Being true to myself. It can become very, very blurry when there are a lot of opinions. I try to maintain that compass within myself. You’ve experienced the celebrity spotlight, but lately it seems like you’ve been lying low. Do you value your private life more at this age?

My life and my family have always been important to me, so sometimes it is a conscious decision. It’s really nice to be away from all the noise and be with the people who I know love me. I spend a lot of time talking to people who know who I am, so it’s nice just to be with people who really don’t care—and there are a lot of people who don’t care! I believe as an actor, it’s better to know a little less [about our personal lives] because we play characters. Still, do you ever get annoyed by rumors about your love life?

No. I think everybody knows what is true. Those

There are moments when it does make me excited, and then there are moments when it doesn’t! My sister has raised two beautiful daughters.

They are the most amazing girls. But then there’s some times when I’m like, “Okay, cool. Bye, guys! Go enjoy yourselves.” It’s fun to send them home with a lot of candy, because it was almost like, “Enjoy it, Mags!” A little payback for being the sister who made me perform weird shows at our parents’ dinner parties. What would you like your life to be like in 10 years?

Oh man. It would be I have a family of my own, and I just started a thriving company to help incredible ﬁlmmakers make movies. If you could go back and change one thing about your life, what would it be?

But on top of a steady stream of acting gigs, moving from city to city for her husband’s career, and having a full house, Holly also took on another very important and timedemanding job: being a caregiver. First, Holly became her father’s caregiver at 19, when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “I was so young, starting off a new life in college, not knowing what the disease even was.” Over the next decade, she learned everything she could and managed her dad’s care, all while establishing her career, getting married, and starting a family. In 2000, Holly received another “swift kick in the gut.” Her three-year-old son RJ was diagnosed with autism. “That’s also when my dad started to develop dementia,” she explains, “so that really took the caregiving piece to another level.”

With such a full plate, it was becoming difficult for Holly to find time for herself while caring for her father, her son, and the rest of her family. Talking to other family caregivers really helped her recognize the need to focus on herself first. “They’d say, ‘If you crumble, then everything crumbles.’” Drawing on support from her husband and friends, she found ways to make time for self-care, including waking up before everyone else to get quiet time and some exercise. “It helps me stay healthy and clearheaded for the day ahead,” she says. Now, Holly is using her overall experience to help others facing a Parkinson’s or autism diagnosis with her HollyRod Foundation. Through the organization, she pays it forward, sharing self-care tactics like her morning routine, the importance of making time for friends, and eating healthy. The biggest piece of advice she passes on to other caregivers? Give yourself credit. “There are going to be days when you feel like you dropped the ball, or you couldn’t do everything, but don’t beat yourself up about it. Instead, realize how hard you’re working and pat yourself on the back.”

In the backyard of a New Jersey beach house, Megyn Kelly rinses the sand off her feet before heading inside, where her husband, Douglas Brunt, is playing a friendly game of Uno with their three children Yates, 8, Yardley, 6, and Thatcher, 4. As they discuss dinner options, she can’t help but note the drastic change in her life since leaving Fox News in January. “I just feel more joyful,” the New York-based TV host says. “Before, two of my kids were in school during the exact hours that I was at home. They would get back at 3:30 p.m., just as I’d be leaving to do The Kelly File. I hadn’t tucked them into bed on a weeknight in three years.” At the same time, working in the “snake pit” of cable news wasn’t her calling. “I’m not a political animal, and I never have been,” she says. “The subject matter was not true to my soul.” With her contract nearing its end, Kelly, 46, started weighing her options. “It was time to do a gut check to make sure I was happy and doing what I’m supposed to,” she says. “The answer was clearly no. Now Kelly, who gained prominence when she tangled with Donald Trump after hosting the ﬁrst GOP presidential debate, has a new morning talk show on NBC: Megyn Kelly Today, premiering Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. And she couldn’t be happier. “I go home at the end of the day with a smile on my face, and I think, ‘This is what I’m supposed to be doing.’ Not only does it allow me to see my children grow up, but also I’m doing the job I’ve always wanted.”

Family First “My kids were missing me, and I was missing them,” says Kelly. “Those first weeks I was home, we were all basking in the glow.”

During her 13 years at Fox, the corporate lawyer

turned journalist worked her way up the ladder. In 2010 she began hosting her own two-hour afternoon show, America Live, before landing The Kelly File in 2013. The hours were long and late, and the rigorous schedule wasn’t compatible with raising three young children. “I loved my show, but I didn’t lovethefactthatIwasmissingallofit,”shesays.“It wassoul-crushing.”Herlifebecameevenmorechaotic during the 2016 presidential election, when Trump began attacking her on Twitter. “I just wanted it to stop,” she said at the time. (Following a private meeting to resolve the conﬂict in April, Kelly says they are now on good terms.) But three months after the Trump ordeal, Kelly’s boss, Fox News chief Roger Ailes, resigned amid sexual harassment accusations. Kelly, though not one of the original accusers, opened up with her own accounts, detailing multiple incidents with Ailes in her memoir Settle for More. She wrote, “My daughter, who deserved tohaveher motherstandupand say,‘Thismanwill not do this to another woman at Fox News. Ever.’ ” Still, it wasn’t easy saying goodbye to the network where she says she “sort of grew up.” “I have so many friends there that I care deeply about,” she says. The transition also hasn’t been without its bumps in the road. The new job also comes with a more relaxed schedule and weekend nights free. “It’s amazing,” says Brunt, 46. “Having her home has transformed the household. Now we can have dinner together as a family and date nights during the week.” Kelly smiles and says, “I feel less stressed and less distant from the things that matter to me—my husband and my children,” she says. “My life.”

Judi Dench is a woman of surprises. At 82, she carries a fidget spinner in her purse (a gift from her grandson). She has tried rapping and has at least one tattoo (it reads “carpe diem,” and it’s on her right wrist—she got it when she turned 81). And she’s the owner of a goldfish named Lazarus, whom she insists she once brought back to life after he went belly up in his tank. “I blew into his mouth, because he had his mouth open, and he was gasping a bit,” Dench explains, adding, “Lazarus is over 17—goldfishes can live a long time.” If Lazarus takes after his mistress, he’s only getting started. Dench—who stars as the title monarch in the movie Victoria & Abdul—is entirely uninterested in slowing down. “Don’t say the word r-e-t-i-r-e,” she warns, allowing that hanging it up is all right for some:

“Daniel Day-Lewis has just retired. I expect he’ll make shoes again. It’s wonderful to do that.” But for Dench, who became globally famous in her 60s, acting is an unquenchable passion, even if macular degeneration means she memorizes her lines aided by a script reader. Yet even an Academy Award hasn’t cured her of nerves. “It all frightens me,” she says. “The day I’m not frightened, that’s when I’m going to get really worried.” Sixty years ago Judith Olivia Dench debuted as Ophelia in an Old Vic Company production ofHamlet. Born in York, she was raised by theater-loving parents—her father, a doctor, sometimes acted in local plays, and her mother sewed costumes. Dench and

her two brothers loved it too. So she went to drama school, being “too young and much too dumb” to “know what the road’s like.” Starting in the ’50s, she worked steadily in British theater and TV and was named a dame by the Queen in 1988. Then mogul Harvey Weinstein decided that the 1997 TV production Mrs. Brown—the ﬁrst time Dench played Queen Victoria—should be released as a movie instead. That, her Oscar for Shakespeare in Love and her role as M in the James Bond movies made her a worldwide star. She joked that she had Weinstein’s name tattooed on her rump in thanks. Work and her Quaker faith are what truly sustain her. In 2001 she lost her husband, actor Michael Williams, father of her actress daughter Finty, to lung cancer. “Grief produces incredible energy,” she says. “Don’t indulge grief—use it.” So she has. Next she’ll appear in Murder on the Orient Express, directed by her friend Kenneth Branagh, and there’s a TV project with pals Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins and Joan Plowright aptly called There’s Nothing Like a Dame. “With any luck,” she hopes to keep acting for the next decade, when not at home in the English countryside with her dog, a “visiting cat” and venerable, lucky Lazarus. “I never know,” she says of what part she’ll play next. “I’ll just wait for somebody to ask me. And if it’s something different, then that’s heaven.”

In 1887 Queen Victoria befriended Abdul Karim, a 24-year-old Indian Muslim servant. Karim (played by Ali Fazal in Victoria & Abdul, above left, and in real life with Victoria in 1890) became the ruler’s “munshi” (teacher), even teaching her Urdu. The relationship inspired racist jealousy, and when Victoria died in 1901 at 81, her son Edward VII had her letters to Karim destroyed. “It was a real friendship,” says Shrabani Basu, on whose book the movie is based. “Victoria was ahead of her time.”

ake Merendino seemed to be living the American dream. The 51-year-old Texas millionaire had just purchased a luxury condo in Rosarito, Mexico, and was planning to celebrate his good fortune with expensive champagne at a romantic restaurant alongside his 23-year-old boyfriend, David Meza. So when Mexican police found Merendino’s body at the bottom of a ravine with more than 20 stab wounds and his throat cut just two days later, on May 2, 2015, his family was at a loss as to how a seemingly charmed life could have ended so brutally. “He was the kind of guy who would do anything for you,” says his cousin Bud Merendino. “We couldn’t think of anyone who would want to hurt him.” Police didn’t have to look far to ﬁnd out. Federal authorities arrested

Merendino’s boyfriend Meza for the murder, alleging he killed his lover so he could inherit his $3 million estate, including the new $273,000 oceanfront condo. Their investigation further uncovered that Meza was living a shocking double life—and had a pregnant girlfriend at home. In February that girlfriend, Taylor Langston, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge for lying to authorities about Meza’s whereabouts on the night of the murder; she is serving a 21-month sentence. Her plea helped a San Diego jury convict Meza in May of Merendino’s murder. Though Meza maintains his innocence and his attorneys argued there was no physical evidence linking Meza to the crime, he is expected to be sentenced Oct. 23.

Adopted as a child, he used the vast fortune he inherited from his late parents, both Exxon Mobil employees, to enjoy life and lavish gifts on his friends and family. He met Meza when he hired him as an escort through an online ad while vacationing in San Diego in June 2013—and was smitten by the “adventurous, young sports fan” who went by the porn name Mario Romo. “He bought him sports cars and motorcycles,” says Merendino’s pal Donna Armani Pineda. “David didn’t want for anything.” It seems Meza wanted more. In the months before the murder Merendino made Meza the beneﬁciary of his condo and wrote up a will on hotel letterhead in December 2014 leaving him his vast fortune. “David didn’t just want a new car,” says Bud. “He wanted everything. And the only way to get it was to kill him.” At the same time Meza was romancing Merendino, he was also in a long-term romantic relationship with the 20-year-old Langston, who claimed

she believed her boyfriend was only working as Merendino’s bookkeeper. According to investigators, Meza began complaining about his job in early 2015, telling Langston “it would all be over very soon.” They also allege he had told friends that Merendino was dying of either cancer or heart problems. Though Merendino’s friends were suspicious of the younger man’s motives, they had no idea their friend was in any danger. “David was much younger and very handsome, so part of me worried that he was a gold digger,” says Merendino’s friend Bo Bendana. “But I never thought it would turn violent.” As police closed in on him, Meza eventually admitted to having lured Merendino to the murder site with a story of being stranded on the road and of robbing Merendino of his condo key and stereo equipment. But he insisted he left him alive when he returned to San Diego that night. Authorities countered that Meza’s cell phone records placed him in Mexico until nearly 4 a.m., giving him ample time to carry out the savage killing. For Merendino’s friends and family, his senseless and brutal death is haunting—and they are left with questions of what his life could have been. “He wasone of themostgivingpeopleyou’d evermeet,” says Sheila Stevens, Merendino’s cousin. “To be murdered in the way he was murdered, I don’t have an adjective for that. It was horrendous.” Adds friend Chuck Hart: “I loved his love of life. He was so looking forward to the next chapter.”

“We’re on the Road Again” isn’t just the lead track on Ringo Starr’s new albumGive More Love—it’s a way of life. Despite having risen to the peak of fame in the ’60s as onefourth of the most successful band of all time, the former Beatles drummer refuses to slow down. In October Starr, 77, will embark on a new tour with the collective of rockers he calls his All-Starr Band. The new album is jammed with cameos—including a little help from Paul McCartney. Starr jokes, “He was looking for work. You’ve got to help when you can.” Starr hopes that by continuing to perform in his preternaturally sunny style, he’s providing more than just a gig to his old bandmate— hence his new album title. “There’s a lot of people hurting out there,” he says. “If nothing else, we have to give love.” He’s received plenty of it, most importantly from his wife of 36 years, actress Barbara Bach, who calls at one point to talk dinner plans. Fifty years after the Fab Four sang “All You Need Is Love,” Starr explains that’s just one lesson learned during a remarkable life. PEOPLE October 2, 2017

Music can save your life I grew up in a gang neighborhood, and you had to be in one for protection. Guys had razor blades in their collars; if you grabbed them, you’d cut your hands. There was a guy called Tommy who carried a hammer. There were no guns, just knives and hammers! I wanted to get out of that with music. By the time I was 18, I was playing. Not very well, but you have to start somewhere. And I got out.

My mother knew we made it when we played the Liverpool Empire. The Beatles moved from clubs to theaters, and that was huge. She’d get all dressed up to come when we played. I once got her a very nice gift from Cartier—and she put it under the bed in case someone stole it!

Know when to move on I was in the Beatles eight years, and we decided to break up because it wasn’t working. I was married and had kids, and we were growing up. I sat in the garden and wondered what to do with myself. I decided, “I’m going to go back to all the songs that my family sang.” And that’s when we did my album Sentimental Journey. I was back on a roll again. 86

Focus on sobriety I didn’t tour in the ’80s, and not a lot in the ’70s. I got involved in a lot of substances, and they became more important than anything else. Then in ’88 I ended up in rehab, and in ’89 I put the ﬁrst All-Starrs together and got back on track. That’s what I’ve done ever since.

Since his certiﬁcation, Norbert, now 8, has become part of the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’s Therapy Dog Program, through which the cuddly canine visits young patients in their hospital beds to give them his signature high-ﬁves, hugs and smiles. “We immediately see their spirits lifted,” says Steines, 37, who married TV journalist Mark Steines in August 2016. “The PEOPLE October 2, 2017

WHITNEY PORT and her TV-producer husband, Tim Rosenman, 36, bought their three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Studio City, Calif., on a serious time crunch. “We moved in a week before Sonny was born,” says the whitneyport.com creative director, 32, who welcomed their son on July 27. Designing the nursery was the first priority. The baby’s gender was unknown, so it had to appeal to both boys and girls, “with enough cutesiness mixed with classic sophistication,” says Port. With help from Joss & Main style director Donna Garlough, Port created a space with playful patterns and a neutral color scheme. The next project was the master suite. “In my old home, we kind of lived in our closet,” says the Hills alum. “So I wanted to make sure that our bedroom felt like a sanctuary.” Now decorated in soft grays and blues with access to the outside, it’s exactly that. “We keep our curtains open to wake up to the sun rising,” Port says. “We just love it.”

2. Add eggs and fish sauce to cooled beef mixture, and stir to combine. 3. Heat 1 teaspoon of the canola oil in a 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low. When oil is hot, use a ladle to scoop some of the eggbeef mixture into skillet. Let omelet set 3 minutes, and sprinkle with some of the scallions. Flip omelet, and cook 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with remaining oil, egg-beef mixture and scallions until mixture is gone. 4. As a serving option, stack omelets on top of each other, and cut into 8 layered slices. Serve with sriracha chili sauce or ketchup. Serves: 8 Active time: 20 minutes Total time: 30 minutes

MEALS AT TIFFANI THIESSEN’S home are anything but serious. “Our family is a very silly one,” says the actress and parent of Harper, 7, and Holt, 2, with her husband, artist and actor Brady Smith. “Brady and my daughter are always pulling pranks and keeping us laughing. She has a rubber cockroach she loves to scare Mama with—she’ll hide it around the kitchen while we’re prepping dinner.” As a self-taught cook and host of Cooking Channel’s Dinner at Tiffani’s, Thiessen, 43, takes control in the kitchen, usually planning suppers ahead of time—with Smith, 45, on cleanup duty and the kids pitching in where they can. “I try to think of meals the week before, but some days it comes down to creating something with whatever is in the fridge,” says the star, who will appear on Netflix’s upcoming comedy series Alexa & Katie. Keeping dinnertime low-stress so “we can all come together to enjoy each other’s company” means picking easy dishes like her pea-and-pancetta pasta (above) that everyone in the family will enjoy, banning cell phones at the table (“We have been trying to implement it as a household rule”) and calling for takeout on occasion. “Every now and then, it saves the day,” she says. He’ll always say, “Google, play ‘Welcome to My House.’ ” He’s a dedicated, devoted child.

Last bet I made I played backgammon with my 83-yearold neighbor, and I won two bucks. I enjoy playing with retired folks, and I like to play for money. He’ll probably win it back, but I’m up a couple dollars. He told me, “You’re just too competitive for me.”

Last gift I gave I just got my nanny who’s also my personal assistant a beautiful embroidered white nightgown from a shop in New Mexico. If I see something that I know is right for someone, I buy it right away because I often forget birthdays. I do the rolling-gift program.

Last guilty pleasure Sitting in a hot tub with my son doing absolutely nothing except giggling. When I get to stop moving. Those are my guilty pleasures.

Last time I laughed Both of my kids crack me up. I play a game with Atlas where he tries to hit a Wiffle ball one-handed with a bat while running. He’s very coordinated, but if he misses, he’ll say, “Mom, go get it!” So basically he’s turned me into a dog. Reported by Emily Strohm
