So did you take lessons? I should have. If I were a serious actor, I probably would have, but I just kind of showed up like, “Here you go, guys!” But it was the most fun I’ve had in my adult life. What do you like doing on a day off? I’ll just go on a long bike ride and maybe do some reading. I’m boring like that. And then hit a rave, of course. [Laughs.] Today I’m probably going to go to three raves; that’s a slow day for me. How have you stayed grounded in Hollywood? Because of my family and where and how I grew up. 4-year-old Prince George is starting school at the private Thomas’s Battersea, where tuition runs $23,000 a year, while 2-year-old Princess Charlotte is expected to begin preschool soon. For Kate, whose pregnancy is not yet 12 weeks along, HG is a sadly familiar challenge. Palace sources tell People that although she has some official outings in the pipeline, none have been announced. Decisions about them—and her planned overseas tour with William in November—will be “taken on a case-by-case basis,” a royal source adds. (During her pregnancy with Charlotte, she wasn’t seen at a public engagement for about ﬁve weeks after her announcement.) For friends of Kate, who is the oldest of three close-knit siblings, and William, it was not a question of if but when they would add to their family— though Kate last year teasingly told those close to her that she “could do with a break” before a third. Now that break is over, and joyful locals are already celebrating in n Kate’s family village of Bucklebury, y, where her parents Carole and Michael Middleton live. “Carole’s a very close grandmother, so she and d Michael will be beaming from ear to ear,” says one resident, adding that No. 3 may not be the last. “I reckon Kate will try to emulate thee Queen and have four!”

What Is Hyperemesis Gravidarum? A life-threatening condition, HG is rare (affecting fewer than 2 percent of pregnant women) and has no cure. Symptoms include extreme nausea and vomiting, which can lead to hospitalization for dehydration. Anti-nausea medications and IV fluids are often used to treat patients, and women who battle the condition are likely to do so in subsequent pregnancies. “It’s quite a scary prospect knowing you’re going to put yourself through that again,” says Caitlin Dean, head of the U.K. group Pregnancy Sickness Support, who battled HG. “For me and my husband that was a huge decision: Not so much ‘Let’s have a third kid,’ but ‘Can we go through HG again?’” Beyond early treatment Dean recommends advance preparation at home. “The average woman doesn’t have the life Kate has, with people to cook and clean and look after their children,” she says. “For regular women, that preparation is absolutely key.”

Bill Skarsgård wasn’t born yet when Stephen King wrote It, but he remembers his older brothers, including True Blood star Alexander, warning him about “the scary clown called Pennywise” when he was a child. Now 27, Bill, one of Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård’s eight children, is terrifying moviegoers in the new bigscreen version (see review, page 43). “I was really excited to do a full character transformation, something so far away from who I am,” he says. Even after filming, Pennywise haunted his nightmares for weeks. But with a sequel in the works, he admits, “I’m really looking forward to getting back under the clown makeup.” —MICHAEL MILLER

I fell in love hard, and when you fall in love that hard, your heart breaks even harder. Every part of you gets shattered. I’m trying to pick up the pieces, and know it’s okay to grieve the loss and cry and curl up under the covers. I’ve done all of those things. Was there a turning point for you when you realized it wasn’t working? The distance wasn’t ever an issue. We tried really hard, but in the end we just realized we were different people fighting to keep a relationship when we just weren’t the best fit for each other. I came home the minute we decided to split and have been leaning on friends and family. What have you learned from the experience? Letting go of the idea of what could’ve been isn’t easy. But I hope he finds his happily ever after. I’ve learned a lot about staying true to yourself despite all the noise and pressure. I’m also trying to stay optimistic about the future and remember that one day the person that I’m meant to be with and start a family with—when the timing is right—we will find our way to each other. It will always be okay in the end.

Gwendoline Christie is many things—confident, earthy, given to uproarious laughter—but the thing people get stuck on is that she is, at 6'3", far taller than most people in Hollywood, male or female. “It’s not something I think too much about,” the English actress, 38, says of her height, though she indulges people when they (endlessly) remark upon it. “I hope it helps change people’s perceptions of what beauty is,” she says. “I think my size, or the roles that I’ve been lucky enough to play, have helped people see a broader definition of femininity. (A giveaway of red balloons, by the way, will be counterproductive.) The problem’s name is Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). The childmurdering demon-clown, the blood-dripping heart of this new ﬁlm of Stephen King’s 1986 magnum opus It, has the crazed, pinprick eyes of Jack Nicholson in The Shining; the giggling malice of Beetlejuice; the cracked, ancientbaby voice of a Gollum—and row upon row of sharp Alien teeth. His special prey are a group of unpopular small-town tweens (notably Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and the wonderful Sophia Lillis). He susses out the things that creep them out— clowns, anyone?—and goes in for the kill. The surprise here (and it’s a nice, even touching one) is that you end up rooting for these losers—a funny, resilient gang of kids by way of Stand by Me—more than you fear Pennywise. Here was an age when carnal experience was dangerous, dirty and properly obscene: not nude images to be swiped through on a mobile device. Franco (a very good actor when he stops kidding around) is cast as twins falling on either side of the law, and the great Gyllenhaal is a prostitute venturing into porn ﬁlms. M Makeup-free and wearing sweatpants, Madonna steps into her London home office with minimal fanfare. As she carefully slurps tea from an overflowing cup while the faint sound of children playing comes from a nearby room, little about her announces the arrival of a legend. This is Madonna the mother, or “Mambo,” as the four youngest of her six children affectionately call her. The differences between the Queen of Pop and Mambo are immediately apparent. Mambo forgoes couture for a holey black hoodie and sneakers. Mambo burns wood-scented candles and stocks her powder room with an air freshener. (Six kids mean even the most spacious townhouse sees plenty of activity.) And most of all, Mambo hugs. She proudly displays photos of her family throughout the house, which—given that this is a woman who once wrote a book devoted to and titled Sex—is jarringly normal, with nary a cone-shaped bra in sight. Recently two new smiling faces have joined the collection of framed portraits in her office. Already mom to daughter Lourdes “Lola” Leon, 20 (with former flame Carlos Leon), and Rocco Ritchie, 17 (with ex-husband Guy Ritchie), the singer in February adopted orphaned twins Estere and Stella from Malawi, the same African country from which she adopted son David Banda and daughter Mercy James, both 11. “I’m just their mother,” says the star, 59, of her youngest daughters, now 5. Their mother also happens to be the highest-selling female artist of all time—not that her little girls know . . . or care. “They don’t have a clue!” Madonna says, noting that her 1983 hit “Holiday” played at dinner recently, and big brother David tried to explain the song was performed by none other than their mom. No luck. “They were like, ‘Huh?’ ” she says, laughing. Animated fare is more their speed. “First it was Moana, now their favorite movie is Sing—they’re obsessed with it,” Madonna says. “We sing ‘I’m Still Standing’ all day long.” Their mom, of course, knows a lot about standing strong. Before adopting David in 2008, she founded Raising Malawi, an organization that aims to educate and support health services for children of the impoverished country. But she has also braved international public scrutiny over her adoptions as well as major setbacks with projects in-country over the years. Reflecting on the thousands of children she’s helped, and how the experience has enriched her own family, the star has no regrets. “It’s so worth it,” she says. On July 11 Madonna invited People to join her in Blantyre, Malawi, for the opening of the Mercy James Centre for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, the country’s first-ever children’s hospital (see side-

“They’re amazing,” Madonna says of the twins, who prefer living in New York City over rainy London. “It’s like they were always here.”

“That’s the crib I met him in,” Madonna says of her son, who once feared going back. “Now they feel a sense of responsibility and connection.”

(Lourdes had a dance workshop at college, “but she was there in spirit!” Madonna says.) “I want my kids to be loving, decent, compassionate human beings. I try to set a good example,” she says. “But it’s been a roller-coaster ride.” The entertainer—who was raised in Bay City, Mich., by her widower father, Silvio Ciccone, after her mom, also named Madonna, died when she was just 5—ﬁrst got the itch to give back about 12 years ago while in the midst of a career renaissance with her hit album Confessions on a Dance Floor. At the time she felt something was missing. Living in L.A. with Lourdes and Rocco, “I remember thinking, ‘I have so much, and I don’t feel like I’m doing enough,’ ” she recalls. Soon after, she was put in touch with Victoria Keelan, a Malawian woman who explained the country’s dire situation: “The 58

universe was listening. I knew that’s where I was supposed to go.” While visiting a hospital in 2006, “I felt like I was in a concentration camp. There were not enough beds for bodies, everyone was emaciated, and people were dying—of AIDS, of malaria, of malnutrition,” says Madonna, who launched Raising Malawi after that ﬁrst trip. “I had children, and I was looking at all these kids who were going to become orphans or already were.” She met David as a baby battling pneumonia and malaria at an orphanage in the capital city of Lilongwe and soon began the adoption process, but when she brought him home in May 2008, “every newspaper said I kidnapped him,” says Madonna. “In my mind I was thinking, ‘Wait a minute. I’m trying to save somebody’s life. Why are you all s----ing on me right now?’ I did everything by the book. That was a real low point for me. I would cry myself to sleep.” Still, her joy at having David conquered even her darkest days—another gift from Malawi.

HOW MADONNA IS RAISING MALAWI According to Global Finance Magazine, the southeast African nation of Malawi is the sixthpoorest country in the world. Since she launched her Raising Malawi charity in 2006, Madonna’s goal for the people of Malawi has been simple: “I want to help them help themselves,” she says. The new Mercy James Centre is a primary example of that, as the hospital doubles as a teaching facility. “It will have a huge impact and create something sustainable,” says Dr. Eric Borgstein, one of only four pediatric surgeons in the country, who teamed with the star to establish the hospital. Though Madonna has donated millions to Raising Malawi’s efforts, friends say she is more than a mere fund-raiser. “She is engaged on a daily basis in a way that people who just write checks are not,” says adviser Trevor Neilson, who has helped the star manage Raising Malawi for six years. “There’s no person like Madonna who has ever done something as complex as she has just done with the hospital. She is tough, smart and extremely committed to this country.”

“When you go places where people have nothing, you see how people are still managing to smile and be happy with the simplest thing, and you feel like a greedy, selﬁsh pig for ever complaining about anything,” she says. “You think, ‘Am I here to help you, or are you helping me?’ ” Even more difficult was adopting Mercy,whowasbedriddenwithmalaria when Madonna met her at an orphanage in Blantyre. By then divorced from Ritchie, she was told by Malawian officials “I was not capable of raising a child,” recalls the singer, who split from the filmmaker in 2008. She successfully challenged the refusal in Malawi’s supreme court and brought Mercy home in June 2009. As for what drew her to her children: “It’s inexplicable. It’s like saying, ‘Why do you fall in love with the people you fall in love with?’ ” she says. “You look into the eyes of somebody, you feel their soul, you feel touched by them— that’s it.” It was the same magic with Estere and Stella after she met them 21⁄2 years ago. This time she spoke to her kids about expanding the family 60

once more. “Mercy and David were excited,’” she says. For her older kids, “there might have been [a feeling of] ‘Oh, we have to share you with more people’—not jealousy, but an adjustment,” she says. “Eventually everyone was supportive. Lola said, ‘Mom, if that’s what you want and it’s going to make you happy, let’s go.’ ” When asked if she’ll adopt again, “I never say never— about anything,” says Madonna, “but I have my hands full, mostly with my oldest children right now.” Lourdes is in her senior year of college, and Rocco is living primarily with his dad in London after the exes waged a headline-making custody battle last year. “I had this funny notion that when your children get older, they learn to take care of themselves and it gets easier,” she says. “But actually the older they get, the more challenging it gets—because now they’re becoming adults, and they really need guidance.” The star admits one of her biggest challenges as a mom remains coparenting. Her philosophy? “I’m in charge! I’m the boss!” she says with a laugh. More seriously: “Lola has a different father than Rocco, and I have four adopted kids, so there’s a lot of outside inﬂuences. Hurricane Harvey made landfall near the greater Houston area on Aug. 25, dropping a record-breaking 27 trillion gallons of water in just days, damaging an estimated 46,000 homes and leaving at least 60 dead. Three days later, as the floodwaters were rising rapidly, Katy, Texas, resident Trey Hamblet got a call from a neighbor who needed to evacuate. “I have access to a large flatbed dump truck, so I went and got them,” says the industrial-projects researcher. But he didn’t stop there. Using his boat, Hamblet has helped dozens of neighbors escape the floodwaters and is now ferrying them in and out as they salvage what’s left of their possessions. “I’m not the only one,” says Hamblet, 46. “Everyone is doing what they can to help. It’s inspiring.”

Madelaine Pfahler, 48, and her family have never been so grateful to so many strangers. After barely escaping the floodwaters in their house by climbing a ladder over their back fence, they were taken in by neighbors they’d never met. Then, days later, as Pfahler sifted through the remains of her ravaged home, two women she’d never seen before showed up in her front yard to help clean up. They worked for hours and returned the next day with their husbands—and a dozen others who are all part of a Houston men’s workout group called F3 (for fitness, fellowship and faith) that has taken to the streets to help people with cleanup and demolition. “I don’t know what we would have done without F3,” says Pfahler. “The generosity of strangers has been beyond amazing.”

As Harvey’s floodwaters continued to rise on Aug. 26, Lutheran South Academy’s head of school, Sheila Psencik, 44, never thought twice about opening her pre-K-12 campus to 150 grateful storm victims seeking refuge. But by the next morning, water had filled LSA’s halls and gymnasium and it was Psencik’s turn to ask for help. “I wasn’t sure anyone would show up,” she says. Instead 500 volunteers from the surrounding area arrived armed with shovels and mops— ready to pitch in. “There were people who lost their homes and vehicles,” says Psencik. “But they still came to help. This is a horrible situation, but it’s made us stronger as a community.”

Houston Pets Alive! usually saves pets at risk of euthanasia. But post-Harvey, the organization has shifted its focus to helping the tens of thousands of animals displaced by the flooding. “People don’t have a place to put their pets—they don’t have a place for themselves,” says Pets Alive! founder Andrea Birkelbach, 33. Luann de Lesseps thought she’d be spending her first summer as a newlywed sailing around the Hamptons with her husband, Tom D’Agostino Jr. Instead the heartbroken costar of The Real Housewives of New York City has been holed up in her beach house, piecing together what happened to her short-lived marriage and sailing her boat alone. “Things turned out very differently to how I imagined,” says Luann, who was previously married to Count Alexandre de Lesseps for 16 years before finding love with businessman D’Agostino Jr. and marrying him in a lavish New Year’s Eve wedding in Palm Beach, Fla. had enough. It was heartbreaking. Did he apologize?

Of course he did. But there’s only so many times you can take it. I was really unhappy. He was unhappy. We were just spent. Do you believe he was cheating on you?

He assured me he wasn’t, but that wasn’t the perception of people around us. We live under the spotlight, so you can’t act a certain way . .. you might be friends with your ex, but it doesn’t look good. But I do believe he wasn’t cheating. And I hope that was the case. Then why was he going out with ex-girlfriends?

He just still wanted to live the life of a bachelor. He said, “You’re not going to change me; this is who I am.” I said, “Okay.” And then I just became more unhappy. I felt like I was constantly defending him and trying to smooth over situations where the other women on the show were accusing him of cheating. Did watching your marriage play out on TV help you with your decision to divorce?

What has the experience taught you?

Just eight months ago you and Tom were celebrating your marriage. What happened?

What was the last straw for you?

He went out with an ex-girlfriend and got caught. We had spent the day at events in the Hamptons and then at a beautiful dinner party. We had friends staying, and it was around 11:30, and we were just hanging out in the kitchen when he announced he was going out on his own. You can’t change people. I really thought he would change because I was the one for him. I really trusted my heart and my instinct, and I loved him. He had all these years to marry somebody and he didn’t, so I thought if he wants to marry me at 50 years old, this man really loves me. I knew he loved me. And do you still love him?

I do love him as a person, yes. But it’s like a Greek tragedy—an impossible scenario that won’t work. He’s not a bad man, he just wasn’t ready for marriage. I tried hard. I’m sure people will think, “Oh, you tried really hard for seven months,” but it was a long seven months! I feel strong in the decision that I made. There’s a sense of relief. I think he’s relieved too. The show was a strain on your relationship. Did you ever think of giving it up?

I would’ve given up the show for Tom if I had a marriage that was working. How have you and the kids [Victoria, 22, and Noel, 20] been since the breakup?

This has been one of the toughest times of my life. That, and getting divorced the ﬁrst time.

There was the honeymoon period of about ﬁve months when it was just the two of us in Palm Beach, but then Tom got caught in the press going out and meeting with exgirlfriends. That caused a lot of ﬁghts.

Yes. I wouldn’t have known he said to his ex Missy, “I’m a dog with a collar.” I wouldn’t have known he told her, “I get all choked up when I see you.” Those comments were hurtful and not respectful of our marriage. At the reunion my blinders came off. I was like, “What the hell am I doing?” Bethenny said, “If he did those things to me, I’d be in the bathroom crying.” But still, I didn’t want to see it.

They’ve been very understanding and supportive and just have my back. What are you focusing on to get through?

I’m reconnecting with myself—focusing on my family and my business. I have a new bedding

‘You think love is enough, but sometimes it just isn’t’

They’ve all reached out for the most part. They feel bad, because they know that my heart was in it. In retrospect I should’ve paid more attention to what they said, and I’m sorry that I didn’t. So it’s almost like I want to thank them for pointing things out. But they supported me, even if they didn’t agree with it. Bethenny said, “Love is blind!” I think she really wished me happiness in the end. Do you still believe in love?

Absolutely! I choose to see the good in people, not the negative. I’m shamelessly optimistic. As for getting married again? Never say never. But I’d deﬁnitely be more cautious next time.

A jury convicted Sandra Melgar of fatally stabbing her husband for money— but she insists he was killed in a deadly home invasion

twassupposedtobeajoyousparty.Friendsandfamilyof Jaime and Sandra Melgar arrived at the couple’s Houston home on Dec. 23, 2012, planning to help the couple celebrate their 32nd wedding anniversary. But once Jaime’s brother and his family let themselves inside the house through an open garage door, they instantly knew something was very wrong. They could hear a woman screaming for help, drawers were pulled out in the couple’s bedroom, and jewelry boxes were strewn around the bathroom. Jaime lay in a pool of blood in the closet, dead from 31 stab wounds. The screams were coming from Sandra, who was in a separate closet, loosely bound by her wrists and ankles. She said she believed they had been victims of a home invasion, but that she had suffered a seizure and had no recollection of what happened. “It haunts me every day,” says the couple’s only daughter, Elizabeth Rose, 32. “I wish I had more answers.” Authorities think they already have the answers— and that they all point to Sandra. During a three-week trial this August, prosecutors charged that Sandra, now 57, fatally stabbed her husband, Jaime, 52, with one of

THE VERDICT

When Sandra Melgar was convicted of first-degree murder, family members were “shocked,” says the couple’s daughter Elizabeth Rose, and Sandra wailed in distress. “I am outraged,” Rose says. “This was a miscarriage of justice.”

Even the prosecutors don’t have a concrete answer. “There were no disputes between them really,” says Barnett. “But when I listened to her statement to the police, I could tell that there were some sore spots.” At trial a witness testiﬁed that Sandra’s religious beliefs— the Melgars were Jehovah’s Witnesses—oppose divorce. “They were not allowed to divorce unless the spouse has committed adultery, which Jaime had not done,” Barnett says. “I think that was part of the motive.” As the case heads to appeal, Rose says she and others who knew her parents will keep fighting to prove her mother didn’t kill her father. “They were happy together,” says Rose. “I feel like I have lost everything. their kitchen knives and then staged a break-in so she could benefit from a $250,000 lifeinsurance policy. On Aug. 24, jurors agreed and found Sandra guilty of ﬁrst-degree murder, sentencing her to 27 years in prison. “There just isn’t any reasonable evidence that it was anybody else but her,” says Harris County district court chief Colleen Barnett. Sandra continues to maintain her innocence, and her defense team plans to appeal her conviction. Her daughter is standing by her: “A gasp went through the courtroom when the verdict was read,” says Rose. “It was a complete shock.” At the trial prosecutors cited inconsistencies in Sandra’s story and introduced evidence suggesting Jaime was already dead when he was tied up. They also pointed to a cloudy ﬁngernail on Sandra’s right hand indicating that she had used cleaning solution to wipe up evidence at the crime scene. But the defense counters that homicide detectives decided Sandra was guilty from the start and ignored leads—such as a swath of blood on a safe—that may have pointed to other suspects. Those close to the Melgars wonder how the couple’s 32-year marriage could end so violently. The pair lived a quiet, comfortable life, with Jaime working as a computer programmer for a school district and Sandra running her own medical billing and coding business. “They liked to go out and have dinner,” says Rose. “They’d hang out with friends. Some-

Rachel Barclay was only 16—and a star volleyball

player at her high school in Utah—when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in June 2010. “There were days when I simply didn’t want to try anymore,” she recalls. “I thought, ‘What’s the point?’ ” After months of grueling chemo, Barclay underwent a bone-marrow transplant in November 2010 that has left her cancer-free. But she never forgot the people who cared for her while she was ill. “My nurses gave me such hope,” she says, “so because I’d been given a second chance, I felt I owed it to them to help other kids like me through the most difficult time in their lives.” Today Barclay is happily fulfilling that pledge at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City— where the 23-year-old has been a pediatric oncology nurse since graduating from nursing school a

year ago. Visiting the same rooms she once stayed in as a teen, she administers medications, oversees general care—and is well-known for organizing dance parties, hallway bike races and movie nights with pizza and popcorn for her young cancer patients, many of whom are in the hospital for weeks at a time. “Having Rachel throughout this journey has been one of our greatest blessings,” says Amanda Visser, whose daughter Millie, now 9 months, was treated for soft-tissue sarcomas earlier this year. “She instantly became someone to look to for hope and encouragement.” But Barclay, whose husband, Jeff, 25, is a landscaper, insists her mission is simple. “These are all such special kids,” she says. “I want them to know that they’re valued and loved and that we’re all pulling for them. That’s exactly what my nurses did for me.”

t’s a picturesque afternoon at Alanis Morissette’s beachfront retreat in Malibu. The singer’s 6-year-old son Ever Imre—wearing a heather-gray T-shirt emblazoned with the word “feminist”— is racing barefoot around the backyard as her 14-month-old daughter Onyx Solace sweetly offers a baby bottle to her stuffed bunny while cuddled up in dad Mario “Souleye” Treadway’s arms. It should be a blissful time for Morissette, but since giving birth she has felt anything but peace. “It’s a roller coaster,” says the 43-year-old entertainer about the crippling postpartum depression she’s been battling since last summer. “As a kid, I imagined having children and being with an amazing partner. This is a whole other wrench I didn’t anticipate.” It’s now Morissette’s second experience with postpartum. After welcoming Ever in 2010, she began feeling symptoms of the disorder—intense physical pain, insomnia, lethargy and “horrifyingly scary” visions of her family being harmed— but well-meaning people in her life chalked it up to baby blues. Morissette, however, knew she needed more “in-depth help.” Sixteen months later the new mom was ﬁnally diagnosedwithPPDandimmediatelybegan a combination of medication and homeopathic treatment. “It’s very isolating,” says the star, who catapulted to the top of the charts with her scathing album Jagged Little Pill more than 20 years ago. “I’m used to being the Rock of Gibraltar, providing, protecting and maneuvering. It had me question everything.” With time Morissette began seeing some relief from the relentlessness of PPD and began planning for another baby with Souleye. Though she knew the depression would likely return, the Grammy winner didn’t let fear stop her from expanding her family. But mere seconds after giving birth to Onyx, the depression set back in, and it’s been “four times worse than the ﬁrst time,” she says. “I thought, ‘Okay, I’m going into the trenches.’ But this time I went much more deeply into them.” While she is working daily on her own recovery with medication, therapy and exercise, her priority remains her two children. “I’ve put them to bed almost every night,” she says. “I want to make sure they’re loved, bonded with and provided for.” But it hasn’t been easy. “I fake-smile really, really well in a way that I’m both proud of and ashamed of,” she says. “When I’m having a rough time, I just sequester myself because I don’t want it to be their burden.” It’s also

affected her seven-year marriage to Souleye, 37, who “sometimes gets the dregs of my exhaustion,” admits Morissette. “Even holding hands at this point is a deeply intimate experience.” Still, her rapper husband is doing the best he can to be supportive. “He and I look at each other, and I just say to him, ‘There’s an end to this. I’m in the middle of it, and I’m so sorry for not being able to be who you typically know me to be.’ ” What Morissette won’t do, however, is stay silent about her struggle. By speaking out about PPD, she hopes to help break the stigma surrounding the illness and end the silent suffering that comes with it. “Women look at me wideeyed going, ‘I had it too,’ and I say, ‘Well, what’d you do?’ They say, ‘Nothing. I just suffered.’ That breaks my heart.” These days what Morissette looks forward to most is feeling like herself again—hopefully soon. “People say, ‘Where’s the old Alanis?’ and I just think, ‘Well, she’s in there. She’s having a minute. I just know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.’ ”

But this summer all eyes were on Céline Dion, who sat front row at the biggest shows, where she was swarmed by photographers eager to snap her fearless designer ensembles (see page 136). looks, an unexpected bright spot in an otherwise challenging time. (She lost her beloved husband and longtime manager, René Angélil, to cancer at 73 in 2016.) “It’s amazing how a little bit of fantasy can alter our moods,” she says. “As everyone knows, I’ve gone through some extremely difficult times in recent years, and I suppose that I’m spreading my wings a little bit more these days and doing so with the help of beautiful clothing and accessories.” Now the mother of three is inviting her fans to share her passion with the release of her eponymous bag line (see box). “My collection combines luxury with function,” she says. “I love couture, but I’m also a mom, and I understand practicality.” And if she’s taught us anything from her style renaissance-meets-reinvention, it’s to indulge in fashion fantasies. “We can be feeling a little bit down when we wake up to face the day,” says Dion, “but things start to brighten up a little when we put on that fancy outﬁt, with the vibrant colors and a spectacular pair of heels.”

Ford, who was black, was shot by 19-year-old Mark Reilly, a white mechanic at Super Stang Auto Body in Central Islip, N.Y., where Ford’s girlfriend’s car was being serviced. Reilly claimed he’d acted in self-defense, and although he was initially arrested for manslaughter, an all-white grand jury declined to indict him. “Reilly should have gone to trial but didn’t, and my family was destroyed because of injustice,” says Ford’s brother Yance. “We were picked up and put down in a place we didn’t recognize.” Now Yance hopes to shine a light on his family’s devastation—and how race factors into the justice system—

with Strong Island, a documentary chronicling his investigation into his brother’s murder that premieres on Netﬂix Sept. 15. The ﬁlm, produced by Danny Glover’s Louverture Films, suggests Suffolk County detectives let their personal racial biases shape the course of their investigation. “Some of the fears William had I continue to have,” says Glover. “William’s death killed his family along with their dreams and aspirations.” Though Reilly and the investigators who handled the case could not be reached for comment by People, former Suffolk County investigator James Hughes says in the documentary that the evidence supported the grand jury’s decision. 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Mix together goat cheese, basil, chives, scallions, salt and pepper in a small bowl until incorporated. 2. Heat 11⁄ 2 teaspoons butter in a large ovenproof skillet over medium, and

swirl to coat. Spread 1⁄ 2 teaspoon butter on 1 side of each of 8 bread slices. Place 2 of the slices, buttered-side down, in skillet. Top 1 bread slice with 4 slices of New York cheddar, and top the other slice with 4 slices of Vermont cheddar. Reduce heat to medium low. 3. Spread 1⁄ 4 cup of goat cheese mixture on one of the bread slices in the skillet. Top with the other slice to form a sandwich. 4. Transfer skillet to preheated oven, and bake until cheese is soft and melted, 4 to 5 minutes. 5. Repeat with remaining butter, bread slices and cheese to make 3 additional sandwiches. Serve hot.
