MY STORY

I PROUDLY PRESENT...

For many years I have been traveling around the world visiting hundreds of organizations for a premier advisory firm to share their latest research insights in the field of Human Resource Development.

I love this work – and at the same time, I wanted more. It was time to let the world hear my own story. A story about “being a part of the game, not a keeper of the score.”

My dream is to live in a world where you can show your “whole self” in your life and work. I believe everyone has something to offer.

But, I also know it is not always easy to see what that ‘something’ is.

So, what would happen if you made your contribution to the world really visible? What could happen if you would become more enterprising?

Living your story To realize my dream I first had to get to work discovering and develop my whole self. Which meant, figuring out what I stand for and what I want to share with the world. Not just pointless navel-gazing but a real attempt to ‘know thyself’ and sharing this with you. I had to start living my own story, so I can help you to start living your story.

I started my own business which gave me the opportunity to take charge and organize things the way I believe works best. I research the ‘state of the art’ knowledge on personal and professional develoment and I act. This is what I do: I help you from insight to action.

So you can do it too: ‘living your story’ by sharing your knowledge to inspire others.

I developed an (online) program for enterprising professionals in the service industry to find their true story, to dare telling it, and to be able to sell it so they can attract their ideal clients. Because I believe, if you sell a service, you actually sell yourself. And that is much more exciting and personal than selling a product. You have to become visible for who you are. You can’t hide behind something or someone else anymore. Only your story counts. And my idea: your story should resonate. Resonate with the people whose lives only you can touch.

So, I proudly present ‘Marieke Magazine’. In this magazine show you who I am and why I do what I do – I share my story with you. Because, living my story is to help yóu live your story.

DANCING THROUGH CHILDHOOD 1976 - 1993

BETWEEN COGNITIVE & CREATIVE 1994 -1998

I was born in 1976 in Oldenzaal, the Netherlands, in a warm family of teachers and my sister Susan joined me in 1978.

Soon after, we moved to Winterswijk, a nice place to grow up.

When I came home from school, tea was ready. When I was six, I started classical ballet and loved the worl of dance.

In 1989 we moved back to jaartal Oldenzaal where dance and music played a big role all throughout high school.

After high school, I was “going to do something different” in 1994 at the Vrije Hoge School.

Maybe this was the most important education I’ve ever had. It was a year with room for creativity and a year in which I looked for something I really wanted to study. I chose (cognitive) psychology in Maastricht because it was a new program.

On the first day there I started a student association and that was characteristic for my college years; to be actively engaged in education and the management of the department.

WORLD CITIZEN LIVING ON TWO CONTINENTS 1998 - 2000 In 1998 I was the first student who was selected to go on an exchange program to the US. I went to the University of Minnesota and discovered a new field: Human Resource Development.

A year full of (international) friendships, a lot of impressions, exploring the amazing nature of the USA and… I met Eric. What followed was a time with very high telephone bills. My exchange became a little more permanent. We married in 2002 and moved (back) to Minnesota.

WANTING TO FIT IN, BUT NOT ENTIRELY In primary school, I was uncertain and I wanted to ‘please’. to fit in. Back and forth between being popular and an outcast. Where do I belong?

When I was eight, I got glasses and short hair – the beginning of a long ‘ugly duckling’ period.

I was very close with my best friend Henriette.

FROM STUDENT TO TEACHER 2002 - 2004 The Fulbright-NAF scholarship made it possible to continue studying in the US. In 2004 I finished my Ph.D. with a dissertation on “(Re)searching Engagement”.

What captivates people in their jobs and what connects them to their organizations? I became Adjunct Faculty at the University of Minnesota and taught HRD and Management Development.

In 2005 I started my career at CEB in Washington DC. I have the time of my live and visit 123 companies in 45 states of the US in 4 years. From Disney to Dow Chemicals from Getronics to GE – I’ve been there to share with them what HR research teaches us and how you apply that in your daily context. An amazing time in which I’m a frequent flyer and collect a lot of hotel points, which we used in 2009 on a trip for two to Hawaii.

We chose a clearer focus, develop new products which all have a focus on knowing yourself (coaching & training) and sharing that story with the world through a personal magazine. PAUSE TO ACCELERATE 2011 - 2013 2011: My American husband’s new job brings us back to the Netherlands! Eric becomes a Trial Attorney for War Crimes at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The certainty from a steady job at CEB ends and I need to figure out who I am without CEB being ‘tattood on my forehead’. In 2012 we lose our daughter before her birth. Time to reflect and refocus on: what do I really want with my life and business?

AMERICA

At 22 I went to study at the University of Minnesota in the USA to expand my horizon. This time abroad has had a very big impact on my life – and lasted a bit longer than the inital exchange year I had planned. I fell in love with American soldier and my exchange year turned into an exchange decade.

I experienced a lot of ‘firsts’ in the US. I bought my first car in the US, had my first child in the US, I bought my first house in the US, I led my first outdoor trip in the US, I had my first experience as a fequent flier in the US and the ilst goes on. I feel blessed living a life that now spans two continents.

ON STAGE The world is my stage

The stage plays an important role in my life. When I was six, I was on stage for the first time for a ballet performance. It was so exciting and fun… I can still see the white tutus, the intense lamps around the mirrors and the stage with the big red curtain. This was a prelude to an encore.

Dance and music defined my years in primary and secondary school. Besides classical ballet, jazz and show dance, I took piano lessons, joined a choir and started classical voice training.

At 18 I went to an opera camp from ‘Buitenkunst’ with my good friend Maaike . We were at least 10 years younger than the other participants.Playing two young sirens we were singing an opera from Purcell at the end of the week. Such fun!

I feel at home in the spotlight. So, it might not come as a surprise then that I chose a job which required me to ‘audition’ to get hired.

With CEB I have been on a lot of stages to share HR research and to translate those to practice. Big stages with hundreds of people in the audience who wanted to hear the latest insights in leadership development. And small stages on which I discussed the latest trends in the field of employee engagement.

I’m currently conquering a new stage. My goal for 2016 is to inspire people using online video, to be more enterprising in their lives and work.

B-School, the online marketing program ‘to build a business and life you love’ by Marie Forleo – was a real eye opener for me as an entrepreneur. The idea of actually building a business that fits exactly in my life and not the other way around, was a turning point for me. My goal: sharing my knowledge using the internet, inspiring people to take charge of their business and lives – I love it!

More Webinars I’ve experienced it over the last years by giving webinars for CEB but also by our own program “Build a Business that Works for You”. What I love about webinars is that they are location independent and that they are scalable. I will give a webinar next week from my home office in Voorburg and I will connect with forty people from all over the world. How great is that?!

Online Video for Storytelling Because I believe it is really important to show your whole self in everything you do, I am now researching how I can use online video and storytelling to inspire even more people to share their stories with the world.

For me, video has the most personal feel of all online tools. It is closest to a real encounter, ánd is scalable. Online Video allows people to discover you again and again.

In Zarayda Gronehart’s ‘Video Business School’ I discovered working with video is not only about learning the technical side but more so about the process of taking a stand - becoming visible. And becoming visible is exciting. And it essential to make a difference. Because, what would happen if I would allow myself a bigger stage?

(ONLINE) LEARNING & SHARING From webinars to online videos

And sometimes, somebody else says it so beautifully, that I just share it directly with you: ‘Yes, but someone else has already written it so beautifully. It already exists and I can’t say it any better, so I don’t’. Do you recognize this?

Everything seems to be thought of by someone else already. And that someone did it so much better than you ever could. Who do you think you are? These kinds of thoughts have hindered me a lot over the years.

Every time I have to write something – whether it is a blog post or my dissertation– these limiting-beliefs come back in ‘full force’. When I feel that way now, I look at the wall in my office where I have this beautiful picture which reads: ‘A flower doesn’t think of competing with the flower next to it, it just blooms’ And I draw courage from it. To go on.

I read a blog post yesterday from someone who said ‘there are lives only YOU can touch’. It’s all about you and you sharing your story with the world. There’s only one you and there are people waiting for you (and I say this to not forget it myself).

I’ve invented something new, so many times when I thought: this is it!

I’ve started over so many times and then I thought: Now I’m free from back then Now I have overcome the past From now on I will do everything differently!

But in today there’s a bit of the past and you take that together to tomorrow and from the things we did yesterday every new idea begins.

It’s not new, it’s not ‘different’ or particular It’s been done in the past, even more than once But for a child, it’s the biggest miracle when it sits and stands up for the first time.

Start before you are ready

Finding your story

How to tell a story that resonates and calls to action Brene Brown, Simon Sinek, Nancy Duarte… they all have millions of views on TED.com and know how to captivate you with their story. They resonate.

But, if your audience doesn’t really feel your story... nothing happens. How do you change that?

If you’ve ever given a bad presentation, you know what I am talking about. You can sense it within a few minutes....this isn’t going well! I’m losing my audience.

What I would like you to think after reading this is: “Hey, these are useful insights! I can make my own story a lot more effective this way.”

I also know this feeling. I have given presentations about Human Resources for years. In the beginning, I was very much focused on remembering all the data points and insights. It was hard work.!

After some time, my presentations went quite well.

I often heard: “That’s interesting, Marieke. Thanks for sharing!”

I hope you feel that you can make a difference with your story. And that you will share your story with the world. In the form of a personal magazine, webinar, slide presentation or maybe even an online video.

But that was not what I wanted to hear. I wanted to hear: “Wow, your story really touched me, Marieke.

This can’t wait any longer! From now on, we will do things differently and because of your presentation I now know exactly where to start. Thank you!”

I want to call people to action. I want to resonate.

To Resonate. Is that something you can learn?

Yes, I believe you can. If you adjust your frequency to your audience, they really feel your story. I have three insights on how you can achieve that.

1. Focus on the ‘moral’ for a clear story

How often did you attend a presentation where you thought afterwards: what was this really about? The problem lies in the design of the presentation or story. It does not have a clear ‘narrative’.

Ask yourself: What do you want to communicate to your audience? What’s the moral of your story?

Finding that message – the key message - can be difficult. It can take a few itterations to get it really clear. But a good first step in finding your narrative is answering the following questions: After hearing, reading or seeing my story: 1. What do I want people to KNOW? 2. What do I want people to FEEL? 3. What do I want people to DO?

What I hope you do is next time you create a presentation you first think about your key message (narrative) before you open up PowerPoint.

2. Tell stories to make a connection

‘Just data does not bring you standing ovations’.

I have noticed that if you really want to have an impact – if you want to call people to action and ignite change – it is not enough share just data.

Data are interesting and lead to new insights. But data alone almost never calls your audience to action.

Data alone almost never leads to real change. People will act when your message touches them. When it strikes a chord.

How do you connect with your audience, you ask?

By telling stories. Stories link facts to emotions.

Brene Brown said it so beautifully: “Stories, are just data with a soul”.

So, you can talk about data but make it vivid by using examples andsharing stories. By connection your message to something I recognize.

Do you know? What are your stories? Make a ‘collection of stories’ which you can quote as examples for your audience. Stories from own experience work best. For instance, when giving a presentation about change, tell me about a time you faced a difficult choice. What did you? How did you overcome your fear?

Have the courage to make your story personal. It gives extra meaning to it. Show your whole self, with everything you are. Share what you believe in!

I truly believe you can make a big difference this way.

You can create compassion and deliver a positive contribution to the world with you story. The world needs your voice.

3. Interaction is key

How important interaction was really hit home for me when I started giving more webinars. The first webinars I did were mostly focused on transferring information. Except maybe for the 5 minute Q&A at the end, there was no interaction with my audience at all.

It is an interesting experience, giving a webinar. You feel as if your sharing your story with a black hole.

You don’t see your audience and you often don’t hear them either.

Now, I use the chat function to intereact with my virtual audience. And I use the webcam to show them I am a realy person :) Interaction can take on different forms. In a live presentation, you can ask your audience questions. Or you can ask for a show of hands to get a sense of the opinions in the room. This is more difficult to do in a video or memo - when you don’t interact directly with your audience.

My advice: close with your key insight and a call to action. So, go back to step 1 and get to work!

It’s clear that the world we live in makes people want to achieve something. Some of us think of dramatic changes in the structure of our society. Others want to at least build a house or write a book, invent a machine or win a medal. Other people seem to be happy if they do something useful for others. But we all judge ourselves on our contribution to the world. When we’re growing older, we feel happier when we played a bigger role in shaping the world and its history.

As it happens, it’s about my own challenge.

Does it resonate wit h you too?

The desire to be useful could be a sign of our mental health in our performance society, but it could also lead to a paralyzing lack of self-respect.

Most of the time we don’t only want to do something useful, in addition to that, we make it a criteria for our sense of self-esteem. And like that, we don’t only succeed, but we become our success.

If the result of our work is becoming too important for us, we start to believe in the delusion that life is a big scoreboard where we can read what we’re worth. And before we realize, we sold our souls to every possible scorer.

In fact, we’re not only in the world then, but also from the world. We let the world decide who or what we are.

We are intelligent because someone gives us a high note.

Helpful because somebody says thank you. Kind because somebody likes us. Important because somebody thinks we’re indispensable. In short, we are worthwhile because we’re successful.

Moments of just being The more we let our achievements – the result of our acts – be the criteria of our sense of self-esteem, the more we are standing on our tippy toes mentally. As a result we find ourselves in a constant state of insecurity and wonder whether we are able to meet all the expectations we created with our latest success.

In most people’s lives there is a spiral of fear, which can take on demonic proportions, when people become more successful. In our world focused on success, life will be increasingly dominated by superlatives. While we outwardly focus on being successful a lot of people are haunted by a deep inferior complex. We live constantly with the fear that someone will pierce the illusion and reveal we are not that smart, not that good and not that kind as we want the world to believe.

Now and then, there’s somebody who admits in a confidential mood: “Everybody thinks I’m so calm and confident… but they have no idea how I really feel…”.

That nagging self-doubt is a source of depression in the life of a lot of people who are struggling to survive in our competitive society.

In addition, that digesting fear to lay our weaknesses bear is interfering with us building communities and engaging in creative exchange.

When we sell our identity to our worlds judges, we inevitably lose our rest because we have a need for confirmation and praise. By constantly rejecting ourselves, we tend to get depressed. We also risk to get isolated because if we don’t dare to be vulnerable with each other, love and friendship don’t get a chance.

When our deeds are more the expression of fear than of inner-freedom, before we know it, we become prisoners of our own delusions.

The inner-freedom unleashes in ‘just being’ (by yourself).

A life without a place of silence, a life that doesn’t have a centerpiece of rest, can easily be destroyed.

When we base our self-knowledge and self-respect on our actions alone, we become greedy and distant. Which makes us look to our neighbors as if they were our enemies who we should keep at a distance rather as friends who we can share the good life with.

In ‘just being’, the illusion of our possessive side is being debunked and we discover that at the very core of our being we are not what we can grasp but we are what is given to us.

In the silence of ‘just being’ we discover that ‘being’ is more important than ‘having’ and we are more than the result of our efforts.

In just being ny ourselves, we realize that our life isn’t a possession we have to defend to others but a gift we can share. In the silence of ‘just being’, we become aware that our value isn’t equal to utility.

The more we detach ourselves from our dependence on the world, the more we are capable of creating a community where we have a lot to share. As a society, we work hard, but we are not taken ababack when results fail to happen.

When you know how to create a place of silence in middle of everything you do and worry about, then your successes and your failures will have less power over you. It is then that your caring for the other will be motivated by what he/ she needs instead of your own wishes. In short: you can really care for someone.

That’s why we have to live fully, but we should not forget from time to time to get up early and to go outside to just be.

Are you a hybrid professional?

Combine your expertise with entrepreneurship

I love these creative big dreamers and I believe they can make a difference. Unfortunately, even though they often have extensive expertise and very valuable ideas, if you do not know how to combine your expertise with entrepreneurship, most often your business will not thrive.

If you want your business to become more than an (expensive) hobby, it is important to know how you can translate your expertise to concrete service products with added value for your clients. It’s important to really think about the value you create, A jump start A jump start for developing your entrepreneurial skills is to become a ‘hybrid independent professional’. In their book “Dansend naar de Toekomst” Lenssen and Manual (2014) describe this new phenomenom. Hybrid professionals earn money with their business but also have an income from a job or retirement.

This is a wonderful fading in, fading out construction for an independent professional who wants to try out being a business owner and be part of a larger organization at the same time. It’s a form of flexibility in which the knowledge for the organization is kept and the employee can simultaneously spread their wings to develop other talents. We see this happening already at some universities and colleges where professors have a consultancy firm in addition to their job. The idea is that you can combine the best of both worlds.

The best for both the organization and the employee.

My own experience As a hybrid independent professional myself, I feel I have the best of both worlds. I work with CEB in the United States where I am a part of the faculty of the HR leadership Academy - a ‘mini-MBA’ for HR professionals who want to develop their business acumen. At the same time I have my own business in entrepreneurship and leadership development in the Netherlands- Kairos Consultancy.

My relationship with CEB is mutually beneficial. I get to travel the world, work with large global organizations and I get access to the latest insights in leadership and organization development. In turn, CEB benefits because the knowledge and expertise I built up over the years is not lost for their clients. And, my Kairos experience enables me to bring a fresh perspective to CEB clients.

Think in solutions So, if being a hybrid independent professional is all that why doesn’t everyone do it? The unique set-up does not come without potential pitfalls. Organizations are concerned about loyality and the protection of information. Establishing trust is vital to the relationship. Without trust and clear communication working as a hybrid independent professional is difficult.

It is crucial to acknowledge and address these issues to move forward. However, we believe that if you think in solutions you can shape the playing field for this new form of partnership between organizations and professionals. Together we can create social innovation which we believe is needed for the future.

A father and his two daughters We always get great comments people find out we are a family business. A father and his two daughters in the organization development & coaching world, is something you don’t come across every day. When you think of a family business, you may think of a shop or a farming business. We often take it for granted oursevles. That’s why we asked Annette, one of Kairos’ associates to interview us.

First things first: What is it like to work together with your father/sister/ daughters?

Susan: Honestly, Marieke and I don’t know any different. For us, Kairos has always existed. When we were still in high school, we were the honorary Kairos ‘head of purchasing’ and ‘head of administration’. Arjen often talked about his work at home, so it actually worked out well to have a business together.

It certainly has benefits: we have a yearly retreat in Giethoorn and a built-in babysitter - Oma.

That is what I experience at Kairos – and it is a wonderful feeling.

Marieke: For me becoming an entrepreneur feels more like a coincidence than a pre-set plan. Just like the fact that I’ve my Ph.D. is something that came across my path and not something I worked towards. For me it was an oppotunity that presented itself at the right time.

But yes, my father always said: “life is lived forwards but understood backwards” and if you look back to my life, you there is a story that unfolds itself over the years.

Susan: Yes, for example take the idea of the personal magazines. I was thinking about this idea for years but when I started working with Kairos, I really got the opportunity to make it reality.

For isntance, when I was ten years old my Dad gave me ten guilders to start my first business. I can still see the blue note in front of me. Together with my best friend Henriette, I started HAMA BV (because HEMA already existed). We washed cars and baked cakes. Two years later, we went on a trip by train paid for with our own money.

Arjen: That’s how I experience it too.

There’s no hassle about money. It all goes to family anyway, so why would you be make a fuss about it?

Other organizations perish on this.

Entrepreneurs understand the concept of ‘being interdependent’ (Covey’s highest level) because you preeminently see that you need each other if you want to continue to thrive. It’s important for us – this giving philosophy.

So you discovered your enterprising gene pretty early! It all sounds like peace and harmony but I know “each benefit has its downside” – What do you think hard about working with your sister/daughters/father?

Yes, and that is how I know the Kairos family: altruistic and with and endless belief in each other’s potential. To achieve that, you “give” a lot. Tell me something more about it.

Susan: There’s nothing wrong with receiving. Getting and receiving is what we do when we get a present or receive a compliment. But giving – the ability to give yourself – is a gift in itself. And that’s what I like more!

I want to bring the interview to an end but Arjen, Marieke and Susan are still in a lively conversation about the principle of ‘giving’. I don’t ask any more questions, but instead I am sucked into the conversation myself and I feel I am ‘part of the family’.
