Welcome to the ‘20s

I

t’s easy to get excited for a new year. Resolutions are made. People dream of what the new year holds. But a new decade is an entirely different beast. Welcome to the ‘20s! I can only imagine what this new decade will bring. The ‘20s will be the third decade of my adult life (considering adult life to be post-college). When I look back at everything that has happened over the past couple of decades, I can’t help but get excited for what’s yet to come. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, is scheduled to get her M.B.A. in May. Starting the ‘20s off with a major accomplishment, the coming years will certainly be exciting for her as she enters the first decade of her adult life. Our son, Peyton, and youngest daughter, Audrey, are in the middle of their high school years. They will experience high school graduation and their college years during the ‘20s – and then some. My wife and I will each hit a major age milestone during the ‘20s – yikes! And it appears, as long as things go as planned, that we are likely to become empty nesters later in the decade. How crazy is that? I hope that the ‘20s will deliver the same type of hectic joy that the last decade has brought. Although I would love for things to simply slow down, I can’t Derrick Breaux help but imagine how we will all look back at the ‘20s once Publisher they have come and gone. And since a new year and decade would not be as fun without resolutions, rest assured that I have a few that I’m working on. You’ll have to stay tuned for the updates. Happy new year (decade) from the Breaux family to yours!

Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

FREEDOM DESIGN BY

Arshia Alenaddaf Solves Community Problems Through Architectural Design by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Forever Photography by Liberty

A

rshia Alenaddaf moved from Las Vegas in 2017, bringing a love for all things architectural. Attending a magnet/technical school as a freshman with an architecture major, here at Poway High School (PHS), he wanted more offerings available, so he co-founded an Architecture club – The American Institute of Architecture Students. PHS is now one of only three chapters in San Diego, and the club serves to bolster Arshia’s favorite classes like math, civil engineering, and architecture and architectural design. President of this AIAS club – an independent, student-run, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing unmatched progressive programs, information, and resources critical to architecture and the experience of education – Arshia loves the principle of student-run architectural projects. Using the AutoDesk Revit program, the first year the club created an urban fast food restaurant, and a sit-down restaurant the next year using the same program. “In our second year we competed in the SDSU Sustainable House Competition, in which we placed second and won $300. Our design was made to follow the Universal Design laws and Habitat for Humanity.” Finding the most inspiration from failures, Arshia believes they only assist in making better future improvements. This year they’re doing a Freedom by Design project, where they must find a community problem that can be solved through architectural design. They’ve been given the opportunity to redesign the floor plan of the Poway Library. “We want to make the project an ultra-community project where all societies like the Photography Team, Poway Art Club, and Future Farmers of America can contribute to our project.” This project is part of Arshia’s volunteer work, along with Poway Robotics Team Spyder where they showcase their robot to younger students. The AIAS Club is interested in finding an architect mentor to assist through their Freedom by Design project. “I am looking for feedback and support on our Architecture Club project,” Arshia said. “When the time comes.” “I have learned the importance of the environment people work in,” Arshia confirmed, “both the effect that the environment has on a person’s mentality and its effect on the organization.” Future plans include a B.S. in Architecture, followed by a M.S. in Structural Engineering. With the goal of becoming a CEO of a real estate corporation that uses modern technology to improve peoples’ lives and the ecosystem Know a student that should be profiled in 92064 Magazine? simultaneously, Arshia Alenaddaf is using every tool available in making the world better for everyone.  Recommend a student online at www.92064magazine.com.

From Now Until Maternity Brandy Gardner spent five weeks on bed rest at the Birth Center at Palomar Medical Center Poway to prevent a premature birth of her son, Ethan.

As a professional doula and mother of two, Brandy Gardner knew “what to expect” when she was expecting. Choosing a hospital that could flawlessly handle the unexpected would change the course of her pregnancy and delivery. “My water broke at 31 weeks and I knew if I delivered immediately my baby could potentially have major medical issues,” said Brandy. Brandy selected the Birth Center at Palomar Medical Center Poway because of its personalized service and homelike feel, but she is most grateful for the expertise of its medical professionals. “I spent five weeks on bed rest,” said Brandy. “The labor and delivery team did everything they could to make my experience enjoyable. I was given

exactly what I needed when I needed it. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.” Five weeks later, baby Ethan arrived without complication. Mom and son enjoyed a special “womb to chest” delivery, providing for skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth. “We try to make each mom’s stay the way she wants it to be, not the way we want it to be,” explained Vaneese Cook, Birth Center nurse manager. “Many of our patients have personal birth plans, and we do our best to honor those.” The staff is trained in natural, unmedicated delivery options, and they also practice the “spinning baby technique” to optimize positioning for the birth canal – decreasing labor time and C-section rates. Wireless fetal monitors allow mom to move around

while laboring, and a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is onsite to provide specialized care for newborns as needed. “Most babies born here are delivered by the patient’s own obstetrician – which is an increasingly rare event,” said Cook. “After delivery, a lactation consultant helps mom and baby to succeed with breastfeeding. All of this personalized attention has earned us 98% on our patient satisfaction scores. We’re very proud of our outcomes.” In addition to top-notch medical care, the Birth Center environment feels more like a resort than a hospital. Large private rooms with laboring tubs allow mom to remain in the same space throughout her stay, while pullout couches provide a comfortable space for family members to spend the night.

Appreciating Poway

POWAY VALLEY GARDEN CLUB HONORS VOLUNTEERS

T

he Poway Valley Garden Club (PVGC) is dedicated to enhancing and beautifying Poway. Last year, having received a grant from The National Garden Club, Inc., PVGC began work on a new Volunteer Appreciation Garden in the shade of Old Poway Park’s Nelson House. This garden is made possible in collaboration with other local businesses and organizations as well: Bernardo Winery, U.S. Navy volunteers, Los Rancheros Kiwanis Club, Poway KRC Company, and Poway Historical Society. The new garden has PVGC more excited than ever for the 42nd Standard Flower Show, scheduled for April 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Old Poway Park. The free Fantasy in the Gardenthemed event will give all ages the opportunity to explore the Volunteer Appreciation Garden, the other six gardens PVGC maintains at Old Poway

Park, show exhibits, and the community favorite plant sale. Master Gardeners will be available to answer gardening questions, and booths will feature school gardens and hands-on planting for younger participants. The flower show is accepting entries in four divisions, each with a unique theme: Horticulture – Magical Creatures; Design – Enchanted Worlds; Educational – Fantastic Flora; and Botanical Arts – Fantasy & Fun Everywhere. Design Division registration is open through April 1 by calling Adele at 858-673-8728. Horticulture Division entries and exhibits will be accepted on April 23 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and April 24 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Nelson and Porter Houses in Old Poway Park. More information on the show and entries can be found at www.powayvalleygardenclub.org or by calling Sharon at 858-672-2593. 

STUDIO WEST T

he Recording Arts Center at Studio West is pleased to announce that the year-long Diploma in Recording Arts program has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for VA funds. This means that The Recording Arts Center can continue to proudly serve veterans with the added benefit of funding support for the program. While the lack of fund support has not stopped veterans from joining the Diploma program in the past, now the Studio is able to better support a wider range of vets in starting a career in the field of audio engineering. “The approval by the VA’s office is a wonderful benefit that we are extremely pleased to offer our veteran students,” Peter Dyson, owner of Studio West, said in a recent interview. “The Diploma in

Recording Arts imparts so much useful knowledge and skill building that it has been a great way for our graduates to start a new career. That we are now able to offer it to more veterans with the support of their VA funds is amazing.” With the majority of eligible graduates and alumni using their knowledge to pursue a career, the year-long Diploma program offers a solid foundation for audio engineers. Classes are held in a worldclass studio and offer participants the chance to get hands-on experience in a professional environment. To learn more about joining the

program, with or without VA funds, please contact Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admission, at todd@StudioWest.com or 858-592-9497. More information can also be found at www.StudioWest.com. 

In Case of Emergency Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps Is Dedicated to Disaster Preparedness photos by Forever Photography by Liberty

W

hen disaster strikes, our neighbors are ready to lend a hand. Poway

Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC) is a grassroots volunteer group dedicated to connecting neighbors, educating the community, and planning ahead to keep Poway safe in case of emergency. The organization provides regular educational seminars, emergency supplies, and family-friendly annual events like the Emergency Survival Fair. One of PNEC’s most critical programs is the Neighborhood Emergency Coordinator (NEC) system – volunteers with distinctive lime green buckets and flags trained to disseminate information and aid communication during local emergencies. 92064 Magazine spoke with PNEC President Terri Sorensen to learn more.

C O V E R F E AT U R E

Q&A With PNEC President Terri Sorensen WHAT IS PNEC’S MISSION? To help Poway residents be prepared for future emergencies. Communities that are prepared tend to recover from emergencies faster. If an individual is prepared, they can help their family be prepared. If a family is prepared they can then help a neighbor be prepared. When neighbors work together with the community it speeds up the recovery time and helps in the healing process for everyone. WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF PNEC? WHEN WAS IT FOUNDED, AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? PNEC was started in 2011 by then-City Councilwoman Merrilee Boyack, who gave an all-call for any preparedness or emergencyminded Poway residents to come to an initial meeting to get involved in helping Poway get educated and organized in preparedness efforts. This was after lessons learned while going through the 2003 and 2007 fires, where residents were having difficulties safely evacuating, seeking shelter, and not having preparedness items to help them through those situations, including sheltering in place during those emergencies. WHAT COMMUNITIES DOES THE GROUP SERVE? Poway, though our bi-monthly community education meetings held the second Thursday of

the month at Poway City Council Chambers, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Meetings are always free and open to anyone interested no matter where they live. DOES THE GROUP COLLABORATE WITH ANY OTHER LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS? We collaborate with Susy Turnbull, Disaster Preparedness Coordinator of Poway Fire Dept., Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Amateur Radio Group Poway Auxiliary Communications Team (PACT), and also serve as the Fire Safe Council of Poway. HOW DID YOU PERSONALLY BECOME INVOLVED WITH PNEC? I came to the initial meeting – a news article in the Poway Chieftain announced it. WHAT DUTIES DOES YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT INVOLVE? • Facilitate the 501(c)(3) board meetings • Recruit volunteers to be Neighborhood Emergency Coordinators and block captains in each of Poway’s 60 identified neighborhoods • Provide networking and training for neighborhood NECs • Offer each neighborhood yearly meetings to get to know PNEC, the Neighbor Helping Neighbor program, who their coordinator is, and how they can help • Organize the annual Emergency Survival Fair each year in May at Old Poway Park • Help locate emergency-related topics and resources to present educational meetings to the community bi-monthly • When requested, bring ham radio licensing classes and CPR trainings to the community each year • Give emergency-related presentations to various groups in and out of Poway,

such as Kiwanis, Rotary, low-income housing apartment managers group, apartment complexes, Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), mobile home parks, etc. Participate in fairs and booth opportunities to disseminate emergency three-minute kits and safety information Attend many other countywide emergency trainings offered and participate in groups like Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), San Diego County Fire Safe Council, etc. Help with annual PACT Field Day communication event and display open to the public in June at Lake Poway Participate in weekly ham radio communication net with PACT Serve as net control once a month Participate in various drills throughout the year involving ham radio, NECs, City of Poway Fire Department, CERT, and other various county organizations.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT YOUR ROLE? Helping individuals be personally prepared. Seeing neighborhoods grasp the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program and creating a support network within. The most challenging? Life keeps our NEC volunteers in constant motion and for various reasons people are not able to volunteer for years at a time, so we are always looking for those willing to be an information point person for their neighborhoods (NECs), assistants, and/or block captains.

WHAT ARE PNEC’S PRIMARY GOALS, BOTH SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM? To provide emergency information and communication to residents during an emergency. Educate Poway residents in preparedness and participate in the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY UPCOMING EVENTS? See attached calendar. WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE ORGANIZATION’S MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS? • Starting the annual Emergency Survival Fair • Helping Safety Services, CERT, and Red Cross provide smoke alarms for residents • Partnering with PACT to provide ham radio and emergency information into

Terri Sorensen Co-Owner of Top Line Roofing, Inc Poway Gardening, raising poultry, singing, attending musicals and plays, traveling with husband, all things family! Torrey Pines State Beach and Reserve, Old Poway Park, Poway Farmers Market, Lake Poway

the neighborhoods participating in successful citywide communication drills • Having volunteers to help with emergencies such as loading sand bags during flood season for residents in need • Providing three-minute kits for families • Helping hand out water during recent water crises HOW CAN COMMUNITY MEMBERS GET INVOLVED OR SUPPORT THE GROUP? We want residents of Poway to know who their Neighborhood Emergency Coordinator is, and if they don’t have one yet, to volunteer as one, or an assistant or block captain, and be a part of the emergency communication chain. NECs each have a lime green safety bucket and flag. Sometimes during emergencies, power may be out and communication and information difficult to get. NECs are trained to know when to put out their bucket and raise the flag so that neighbors will know they have emergency information to share. If you see this, then

stop and find out what is going on. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR MEMBERSHIP? Residents of Poway. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD FOR OUR READERS? PNEC is unique to San Diego County. During emergencies, we often receive requests for interviews from the media, as they are impressed by the level of preparedness and commitment of our volunteers. Even though residents do not need to be actively involved as a neighborhood coordinator or ham radio operator, we encourage them to attend our informative meetings held at council chambers. All meetings are posted on Nextdoor one week in advance of the meeting, and articles of advertisement for the meetings are in the Poway Chieftain. We hope that members of our community will take the next step to better prepare themselves and their families, so they can assist their neighbors as needed in times of emergencies. 

Selena Pankretz Fills a Need for Art Education in Poway

of

by KELLEY GUSICH | photos by Forever Photography by Liberty

“W

hen my oldest child started school,” said Valley Elementary School volunteer Selena Pankretz, “I realized there was no formal art program.” She immediately volunteered to teach an art lesson in his class, and she was determined to fill the need. Developing a comprehensive art curriculum for each grade, Selena is on the PTA Board as the Vice President of Art, making sure there are art supplies, lessons, and events available for students. Selena is currently teaching art in kindergarten through fifth grade classes at Valley – and Highland Ranch Elementary! Having studied fine art and communications/journalism at the University of New Mexico, Selena can now use her knowledge here. “My lessons usually include learning about an artist or art movement, an element of art (space, line, color, etc.), and a technique in the medium (i.e. crosshatch, dry brush, wash, etc.),” she confirmed. “I go into six to eight classes every week teaching my comprehensive art curriculum.” Recently, Selena realized how many students could use a break during class time, so she created a Sensory Path Initiative, which involves colorful, self-guided paths painted on sidewalks and blacktops, helping students use physical energy and movement to help re-focus and re-engage with learning. Every year on her birthday, Selena tries to do something that scares her just a little or puts her outside her comfort zone. “Sometimes it ends badly, like the time I tried false eyelashes, but sometimes it leads me to a new passion.” That’s what happened with her current love for aerial silks, on which she’s been flying and flipping for the past five years. Selena’s been married for 18 years to husband Ty Pankretz. “He’s the love of my life and my partner in crime,” Selena smiled. With four children, three boys and a girl, “They bring us joy and adventure, constantly keep us on our toes! We love playing games, making art, and laughing together.” In retrospect, Selena’s love for art was born when she was in fourth grade, and an artist came to her class. The few visits changed her life. “My hope has always been to do that for someone else, to start that spark!” Selena confirmed. “I have taught over 600 students and seeing that moment when they feel magical creating art is the greatest accomplishment I could hope for. My hope for each day is to be a force for good in the world, and help make the world be a better place.”  Name: Community: Volunteer Affiliation: Profession: Family: Hobbies & Interests:

Mechanical Advantage Team 16884 finished in first place at the Dec. 7 Tucson, AZ FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier, along with alliance partner The ROBO Warriors Team 15652. Mechanical Advantage also received the Control Award for programming. Their performance at this event earned them the chance to compete in the Arizona State Championship in Flagstaff, AZ in February. The team then closed out the year at the Central Phoenix Qualifying Tournament in Phoenix, AZ on Dec. 21, earning the first place Design Award and second place Connect Award. These awards

were hard-fought, and Mechanical Advantage had to overcome a major electrical failure during the event. Mechanical Advantage includes team members from multiple local schools: Rohan Bosworth and Madalyn Nguyen from Poway High School; Manjusri Gobiraj, Kaila Rosing, and Christina Schierbeck from Scripps Ranch High School; P.J. Wetherell and Reily Hopkins from Westview High School; Rohin Sood from Oak Valley Middle School; and Arya Bosworth from Black Mountain Middle School. Rohan, Madalyn, and P.J. serve as team captains, and this was the team’s first competitive year in the FIRST Tech Challenge. In addition to competing, Mechanical Advantage mentors younger FIRST Robotics teams, volunteers, and collaborates with sister organization Team Spyder 1622. Helping Your Kids Buy A Home

A

common theme I hear among Poway parents is the concern that their kids will never be able to afford to buy a home here. Although this is an exaggeration, it is a valid concern, as home prices have continued to increase, and salaries have not kept up. With that in mind, many parents are considering options for how they can help their adult children in this big step. Luckily, there are many ways a parent can help, but financial resources, planning, and careful consideration of all factors are all necessary to make this a reality. The first way to help your child purchase a home is to plan ahead. Teach your kids about the value of outstanding credit, and help them to achieve it. This can be done by adding them to your credit card as an authorized user early on. The longer they can show they have credit, the better their own scores will be. Further, if your credit is stellar, theirs will reflect it. You can also add your child to your savings account, which will show as additional reserves they can tap into to make a payment, should

they lose their income. This needs to be done several months before applying for the loan, so planning ahead is critical. A second way you can help is by assisting with the down payment. Although the magic 20% down is not required to get a loan, it does help by eliminating additional fees to the monthly payments, allowing the borrower to afford more home. For many loan options, a parent may gift a down payment to their child. Be aware, however, that you may be required to pay taxes on this gift, and you will probably have to sign a letter for the lender stating that this is not a loan, and does not need to be paid back. Finally, you can be a co-borrower on the loan. This means you can be financially responsible for making the monthly mortgage payments, should your son or daughter fail to do so; however, unlike

co-signing, you own part of the property, making this a much better option. If you have a reliable income, excellent credit, and additional assets, this option makes the loan approval far more likely. Each of these tips can have serious repercussions, both positive and negative, so be sure to contact a financial advisor or accountant before making any large financial decisions. In addition, have a serious discussion with your kids, to make sure they understand and are ready for the financial burdens as well as joys of homeownership. When you have a plan in place, be sure to contact a Realtor to help with the search and negotiation. There is too much at stake to take any chances. 

Student filmmakers from San Diego State University’s School of Theatre, Television, and Film present a series of romantic short films. Bring a date – but leave kids under six at home – for this one-of-a-kind evening, as each filmmaker takes a different approach to filming love.
