A Sixteen-Year-Old Son
Y
esterday was my son’s 16th birthday. Peyton’s the middle child and we’ve crossed these types of milestones before, but it’s still a unique experience. We’ve been his personal taxi driver for years. Sure, it gets old driving him from school to practice and then to another practice, but at the end of the day we really do enjoy it. But that is all about to change. Tomorrow he takes his driver’s test. Fingers crossed. For his birthday party, my son decided that he wanted to invite some of his friends over to the house to hang and then go out to dinner at a “fun” restaurant. We limited the number to 10 and set the location for Gen Korean BBQ – a fun all-you-can-eat restaurant in Mira Mesa where you grill your own food at the table. Peyton is now at that age where some of his friends are driving and others will be driving soon. The non-drivers loaded up into our cars and the legal drivers decided to take their own wheels to the restaurant (even though we had plenty of seats in our cars). Apparently driving more cars than needed is just what you do when you get your license. The freedom of the road. Independence! With a party of 12 (yep, mom and dad tagged along to hang out and pay the bill), we had a blast eating all types of Korean meat. Peyton’s friends gave the menu a run for its money! And the restaurant staff was great in announcing his birthday over the microphone to the entire restaurant. It was a perfect birthday dinner. The night couldn’t end without a trip to the local ice cream shop. We loaded up our caravan of cars and invaded Baskin Robbins. The kids were a bit loud and playing around in the store. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. We all ordered our treats and decided to eat in the car since it was getting late. And that’s when something special happened. An older gentleman and his wife followed us out of Baskin Robbins and knocked on my car window just before I was about to back out of the parking spot. Not knowing what he was about to say (after all, the kids were a bit of a hurricane inside Baskin Robbins), I rolled down my window and braced myself. He said, “My wife and I just wanted you to know how special it is to see two parents spending time with their kids and their friends like you are doing.” I thanked him for going out of his way to let me know their thoughts. I spent the next 20 minutes on the drive home thinking about the man’s words. The night was definitely special. And I’m thankful that he took the time to share his thoughts with me. It would have been easier for him to not knock on my window in the parking lot. But in doing so, his words encouraged me to reflect and take it all in. Thank you, sir, for going out of your way. It was a good night with good friends. Happy birthday, Peyton! Thanks for being you.

RB GIRL SCOUTS INVEST IN THEMSELVES AND THEIR COMMUNITY
R
ancho Bernardo-based Girl Scout Cadette Troop 2151 has big plans for this year’s cookie earnings. The troop, led by Camille Reyno, has been hard at work selling enough Girl Scout cookies to meet their goals for the upcoming year. Some of the proceeds will go towards Troop 2151’s two Silver Awards in progress – the highest award available for Cadettes. The first project is a Buddy Bench at Bernardo Heights Middle School, which the girls envision as a place for students to connect with others and foster a sense of community. The second project is an awareness campaign educating teenagers about the warning signs of human trafficking. The campaign will use social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube as well as community open houses. Troop 2151’s cookie profits will also fund other service projects – and some fun activities. Every year, the troop donates filled Easter baskets to teen girls at Casa de Amparo, which serves children affected by and at risk of abuse. The troop has a camping and hiking trip to Borrego Springs planned, as well as a bridging ceremony at Yosemite National Park, where they’ll promote to the next level of Girl Scouts, Seniors. Remaining cookie money will be used to send a girl in need to Girl Scout camp this summer. Learn more about Girl Scouts San Diego at www.sdgirlscouts.org, and learn more about local opportunities by contacting Rancho Bernardo Recruitment Specialist Victoria Vazquez at vvazquez@sdgirlscouts.org. ¢

T
hese three sophomores at Del Norte High School, twins Lola and Sophie Bulkin and their friend Ellie Zeiler, created their own Instagram account last year, called the Together As One (TGAO) movement, after all three experienced prejudiced behavior from their fellow students. The site expanded into a school club and nonprofit organization, and Lola, Sophie, and Ellie have even been on a Channel 8 televised community meeting panel in which they promoted their TGAO mission. Lola said, “We thought that creating a positive and inclusive platform to spread awareness to the community would be an effective way to combat any growing hate.” Ellie shared, “By starting TGAO, we created an outlet for teens to hear other people’s stories, no matter their culture, lifestyle, or religion.” The TGAO club meets at school twice a month, and the students are encouraged to share their ideas and experiences in a supportive environment. The attendees also do such activities as make appreciation cards and create and hang posters throughout the campus. About a month after initially forming TGAO, the Chabad of Poway shooting incident took place, which affected the girls deeply as each had
ties to the temple – all three had attended its preschool. Through their TGAO platform, the girls made and sold t-shirts to raise funds for the Chabad of Poway victims. Sophie elaborated, “The t-shirts represented a message of unity, kindness, and acceptance. The support of our community showed how impactful one person’s actions could be, and how we must all stand together and embrace each other’s differences.” The girls are now working toward bringing their club and its values to other San Diego area schools, starting with Poway High School. Lola revealed, “Ultimately, we hope to spread our club to every Poway Unified School District high school and continue to grow as a movement.” Ellie said, “We’d also love to work with elementary and middle schools so we can reach kids before they get to high school, which seems to be when a lot more prejudice comes out.” Another TGAO endeavor the girls are undertaking is improving the Instagram platform by adding more videos featuring other students. Sophie exclaimed, “We are trying to express the cultural differences in our community by interviewing kids from both our school and other schools.” Ellie added, “It takes a lot of courage to tell your story and put yourself out there but once you do, you realize so many other people can relate.” When they’re not involved with TGAO, each girl keeps busy with various pursuits. Ellie volunteers by teaching golf at the Special Olympics, Lola plays soccer for her high school and for Force FC, and Sophie also plays soccer for her high school and takes rowing classes. All three plan to attend college and to continue dedicating their time to the TGAO movement for many years to come. Follow Together As One on Instagram @tgaomovement. ¢

A DENTAL HOME DR. ELLEN IM PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AND ORTHODONTICS PROVIDES FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRUST

r. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, in operation since 2014 when it took over the Poway Kids Dental Care location, is focused on family-friendliness. As a mother of three children herself, owner Dr. Ellen Im emphasized, “The inspiration behind my practice came from the perspective of being a mother. I wanted a practice where parents would feel comfortable bringing their children.” Providing that comfort level involved developing a sense of security with her young clients and their parents. Dr. Im elaborated, “Families trust me as an ethical, caring doctor. They know they’ll be treated well by the dental team and given all their options on care, appointments, and finances. We’ll ultimately establish for them a dental home where the child can grow and mature as an individual.” One way that Dr. Im’s office allows the child to grow and mature is by offering “comfort menus.” These menus allow patients to select their own choice for: protective eyewear, a movie to watch, and an anxiety-reducing item (stress balls, warm blankets, stuffed animals, etc.). Even though her office has these homey touches, Dr. Im doesn’t compromise when it comes to modern technology options such as tooth-colored fillings, digital x-rays, laser dentistry, and even nitrous oxide or sedation dentistry if necessary. There is also a board certified orthodontist on site, Dr. Torin Chenard, who treats both children and adults with options such as interceptive orthodontics, Invisalign, and traditional braces. 20 • 92128MAGAZINE.COM • March | April 2020
Dr. Im spent many years providing dental care to the disadvantaged population while working in the greater Washington D.C./ Baltimore area after graduating from the University of Maryland Dental School. Now she specializes in oral health treatment for children ranging from infants to young adults, including those with special needs. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD), Dr. Im’s credentials verify her as a dentist who has successfully completed voluntary examinations, and who demonstrates specialized knowledge and skills. Immersing her business into neighborhood outreach activities, Dr. Im and her dental team give fun and interactive oral hygiene presentations at local schools and

In addition, the office sponsors multiple elementary schools and sports teams in Poway and the surrounding areas. It’s no wonder that Dr. Ellen Im Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics has as its office motto, “Building a healthy community one smile at a time.” ¢

Ren convinces his friends to participate in a school dance competition in order to win her over and revolutionize the town. Performances will be held May 7 through 10, and tickets will be available beginning April 1 for $10 each. Find tickets at www.showtix4u.com, and learn more by contacting theater@smspoway.org.

Outpost Summer Camps
O
utpost Summer Camps provides valuable opportunities for children to connect with each other face to face and away from screens. Founded in 2001, the camp serves over 1,500 children every summer completely outdoors and unplugged. The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for 18 summers: nature, fun, and exceptional staff! Nature is the vehicle through which children get to play collaboratively and creatively. Fun is experienced on a surface level through exciting games and on a deeper level through a sense of belonging and community. Exceptional staff lead small, consistent groups with a focus on friendships, special traditions, and an inclusive culture. Door-to-door transportation is included in the program fee and available to most families. Outpost serves children ages 3 to 14, and according to Dr. Kelly Jones, the camp’s owner and director: “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities, and all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous adventures facilitated by the counselors and campers.” The three-week sessions and small, consistent groups are what make Outpost so impactful. Dr. Kelly explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.” The camps also stand out with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates under permit from the County of San Diego as an Organized Camp. Dr. Kelly, a clinical psychologist, and her husband Stuart bring years of child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 10 to 15 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. CodeREV Kids
W
ith the growing popularity of STEAM programs in schools, many parents are turning to technology camps to keep their students entertained and engaged during summer months. CodeREV Kids is one of Southern California’s fastest growing tech camps, and according to Founder Evan Boorman, offers the only standards-aligned summer tech program that focuses on math and science. Evan explained, “I started CodeREV to answer the question so many students have: ‘Why? Why should I learn math, science, or engineering?’ In our project-based classes and curriculum, students automatically answer these questions for themselves, since they need to learn these topic areas to create the fun and amazing projects they build and code in camp.” CodeREV offers a variety of classes for kids ages 6 to 16 to appeal to all technology-based interests. Its MathCraft program uses the popular video game Minecraft to teach math, and its Adventures in Programming class covers 3D game design. Its most popular option, Minecraft Level Design & Engineering, applies STEAM concepts to building amazing contraptions inside Minecraft. With a total of 10 different classes to choose from, there is something for everyone at CodeREV. Evan has been teaching STEAM for 17 years, has created education software, and has started education technology companies. Evan’s partner, Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D., holds a Master’s degree in Education Technology from Stanford and a Ph.D. in Education Reform from UCLA, and has been teaching and creating curriculum for coding aligned with math for three decades. Evan and John believe that their combined 50 years of experience, coupled with the most innovative teaching approaches in technology, are critical to bringing coding into mainstream education and preparing students for their future by getting them excited about using math, logic, and science. SUMMER CAMP GUIDE
California All-Stars
C
alifornia All-Stars Cheer (CAS) began its story 19 years ago in North County San Diego. With more than 1,000 athletes throughout six locations – San Marcos, the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Ventura, Ontario, and Scottsdale, AZ – CAS has worked its way to offering the most competitive cheer program in the state of California, gaining international recognition along the way as 12-time World Champions. “All-Stars encompasses all the fun aspects about cheerleading, including dance, stunts, bonding with friends, and gaining confidence and skill through performances. Building the children from the inside out is what we do, because we focus on them as a whole,” said Tannaz Kirichkow, Owner of CAS. “Our goal is to make sure our kids gain a strong sense of self-confidence that will carry on for the rest of their lives.” CAS offers tumbling camps in the summer, which focus on tumbling techniques for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The camps can last two or three days and are three hours per day. Camps are open to both boys and girls. CAS provides a sense of work ethic and life lessons in each of its classes, including a sense of bonding and camaraderie for cheerleaders who travel to national and international competitions. “People come to California All-Stars for top-quality coaching and family atmosphere,” explained Tannaz. “Life lessons, core values, and athletic excellence come hand-in-hand. We love to see our kids succeed on and off the floor!” With a trained and energetic staff, spacious gym, and professional instruction, CAS has something for every budding cheerleader out there! Tryouts for new teams will be held May 13, 14, and 16, and students should preferably be there all three days. The tryout process determines team placement. Everyone is placed on a team; there are no cuts. CAS also has “prep” teams for families that are looking to enroll without the travel requirement.
