Welcome to the ‘20s
I
t’s easy to get excited for a new year. Resolutions are made. People dream of what the new year holds. But a new decade is an entirely different beast. Welcome to the ‘20s! I can only imagine what this new decade will bring. The ‘20s will be the third decade of my adult life (considering adult life to be post-college). When I look back at everything that has happened over the past couple of decades, I can’t help but get excited for what’s yet to come. Our oldest daughter, Ashley, is scheduled to get her M.B.A. in May. Starting the ‘20s off with a major accomplishment, the coming years will certainly be exciting for her as she enters the first decade of her adult life. Our son, Peyton, and youngest daughter, Audrey, are in the middle of their high school years. They will experience high school graduation and their college years during the ‘20s – and then some. My wife and I will each hit a major age milestone during the ‘20s – yikes! And it appears, as long as things go as planned, that we are likely to become empty nesters later in the decade. How crazy is that? I hope that the ‘20s will deliver the same type of hectic joy that the last decade has brought. Although I would love for things to simply slow down, I can’t Derrick Breaux help but imagine how we will all look back at the ‘20s once Publisher they have come and gone. And since a new year and decade would not be as fun without resolutions, rest assured that I have a few that I’m working on. You’ll have to stay tuned for the updates. Happy new year (decade) from the Breaux family to yours!
Regards, Derrick Breaux, Publisher

ALYZE DREILING IS A CONDUCTING FORCE FOR LOCAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA by LINDA FRABL | photo by Forever Photography by Liberty
G
Name: Profession: Community: Favorite Local Spots:
Alyze Dreiling Conductor, Violinist, Violist Rancho Bernardo – Westwood since 1994 Barons Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, Bernardo Winery, all local restaurants
rowing up in an arts-infused household in Michigan with a father who was a pianist/organist and a mother who was a pianist/singer/oil-painter, it was inevitable that Alyze Dreiling would grow up to become enmeshed in the world of musical arts herself. Alyze, who began playing the violin at age 12, admitted, “Ever since I was little it was impossible for me to consider being anything other than a musician, especially a violinist. Music was always everywhere in the house!” Now a resident of the Westwood community, Alyze is a wellknown presence in San Diego’s musical performance and education circuit. Alyze is the founder, artistic director, and conductor of the Soloists Ensemble, Sinfonietta, and Festival Orchestra, all part of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also the conductor of North Coast Strings at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, and the principal viola in the Grossmont Symphony and String Quintet. Alyze is also the music coach of the violin and viola sections at numerous schools: RBHS, Westview HS, Del Norte HS, Oak Valley MS, Challenger MS, and intermittently at Mira Mesa High School and Mission Bay High School. Plus, Alyze has her own private teaching clientele of about 50 students. Alyze commented, “It is very fulfilling to me, as a conductor, to lead and inspire these young musicians who are on their path in musical development.” Recently, Alyze was awarded the 2019 First Prize for Conductor of Youth Orchestra division from the American Prize, a national competition. She was also selected to participate in two International Conducting Competitions in 2018, one in Sofia, Bulgaria, and one in Nice, France. Alyze revealed, “I would like to conduct more here and abroad. My biggest goal would be to develop and perform with a professional chamber women’s orchestra here in San Diego, featuring a great deal of music by female composers.” A fan of Rancho Bernardo, Alyze served on the city’s Planning Board and Community Council, and volunteered as Entertainment Coordinator for the RB Alive Event for numerous years. Alyze proclaimed, “I want to be involved with serving the community and getting to know the people. I like to give back as much as I can!”

A NEW FORCE to be reckoned with Soccer in the community of 4S Ranch continues to flourish! Force FC is happy to announce their first players joining the WPSL (Women’s Premier Soccer League), Breakaway S.C. It’s a league that US National Team players such as Megan Rapinoe, Hope Solo and Alex Morgan used to further their player development before entering the National stage. “For our players, it’s an opportunity to continue providing developmental pathways for soccer players that want to elevate their game to the next level”, stated Jose Ocampo, Force Director, DNHS Varsity coach and Breakaway SC coach. With the help of the Athletic Director, Mike Gaime and a partnership with Del Norte High School, the WPSL will host their home games at the home of the Nighthawks. Force players like Christina Espinosa, Zoe Brick, Caroline Espinosa who have recently signed with Breakaway SC will be able to take advantage of their High School alma Mater as they hope to welcome a supportive crowd. “We hope to continue to work with passionate female soccer players that aim to take their talents to compete on another national level stage because I sincerely feel that in the past seven years we’ve developed players that can compete with some of the best in the country”. - Adrian Ocampo, Force Assistant Girls Director, DNHS Varsity Coach, Breakaway SC Coach

STUDIO WEST T
he Recording Arts Center at Studio West is pleased to announce that the year-long Diploma in Recording Arts program has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for VA funds. This means that The Recording Arts Center can continue to proudly serve veterans with the added benefit of funding support for the program. While the lack of fund support has not stopped veterans from joining the Diploma program in the past, now the Studio is able to better support a wider range of vets in starting a career in the field of audio engineering. “The approval by the VA’s office is a wonderful benefit that we are extremely pleased to offer our veteran students,” Peter Dyson, owner of Studio West, said in a recent interview. “The Diploma in
Recording Arts imparts so much useful knowledge and skill building that it has been a great way for our graduates to start a new career. That we are now able to offer it to more veterans with the support of their VA funds is amazing.” With the majority of eligible graduates and alumni using their knowledge to pursue a career, the year-long Diploma program offers a solid foundation for audio engineers. Classes are held in a worldclass studio and offer participants the chance to get hands-on experience in a professional environment. To learn more about joining the
program, with or without VA funds, please contact Todd Hunsaker, Director of Admission, at todd@StudioWest.com or 858-592-9497. More information can also be found at www.StudioWest.com.

appy New Year, PQ! After all the winter festivities we are heading into spring and summer with an energized sense of community action for our community events. We need to take on funding our events at a whole new level due to the elimination of funding for PQ. We're adopting a super heroes theme to keep our traditions going and have put on our fundraising capes as PQ Heroes (Fiesta & Fireworks Committee Members/Volunteers), and local restaurants and event sponsors are all in. Visit our community calendar for dine-out fundraisers being held in February and March for the whole family. Together, we are committed to being funded for our two big events coming in May and July: the 25th Fiesta de los Penasquitos & Parade, May 3, with this year’s theme of PQ Local Heroes; and the community-sponsored PQ Fireworks Show & Festival on July 3. Traditionally the first weekend in May is our time to celebrate our thriving community, with events for the whole family:

Local Author Publishes Second Novel North County resident and young adult author Nikki Katz recently published her second novel, The King’s Questioner. The book, published and distributed by Swoon Reads, is about a boy named Kalen who has been cursed with a gift: he’s a mental picklock, able to access a person’s memories and secrets by touch. His skills make him the perfect questioner to the king, and he spends his days interrogating prisoners of the crown. But when Kalen’s estranged childhood friend, Prince Cirrus, falls into a sudden coma, the king begs Kalen to intervene. By accessing Cirrus’ mind, Kalen saves his life – and uncovers a terrifying secret that could topple the kingdom. Nikki is also the author of The Midnight Dance, as well as four nonfiction puzzle and games books. “I’m so very thankful for my readers,” Nikki said. “I love the idea that something (beyond my children) will live beyond me. Some time, some year, some place, a child may pick up one of my books and read it.” The King’s Questioner is available anywhere books are sold, including most online bookstores.

What is Toastmasters International? Toastmasters International is a U.S.-headquartered nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood, CO, the organization’s membership exceeds 357,000 in more than 16,600 clubs in 143 countries. Since 1924,

In particular, we have more members who are originally from other countries and speak English as a second language, and I think we also have a more even number of women and men, instead of tending to be male-dominated. We also have many more members coming from the tech industry now, which was a much smaller business sector in San Diego back then. We have always been structured and well-organized, but I think the meeting atmosphere is lighter and less formal now. Any level of casual dress is now commonplace, and I think there is more humor throughout the meeting. When I first joined,

“We have a more diverse membership now, which I think has made the club much more fun and enriching.” so many more workplaces have casual dress now, and more people have variable schedules, work remotely, etc. I believe the club has changed location four times. Our current location is by far the best.
How did you personally become involved with Toastmasters? I visited a Toastmasters club as a guest in 2007 as recommended by my colleagues at work. I planned to just listen and be quiet at first. Then they started the table topic section where members practice impromptu speaking. I still remember the question, “What is your favorite music and why?” I was asked to participate in the section as a speaker. Although I was nervous and it was my first visit, I went for it. The question was supposed to be so easy to answer, but I found myself struggling to fill the 40-second speech time. I repeated the same phrase multiple times, I stumbled over my words, and I used a lot of “ah” and “ums.” That was the moment I realized there were many things that I needed to work on in public speaking. I joined the club immediately.

What is your current role within the organization and what duties does it entail? I am president of the club. As president I preside over meetings and supervise the operations of our club. I am also one of the club’s representatives on area and district councils.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being involved with Toastmasters? The most challenging? It is most rewarding to become a better speaker, listener, and leader within a fun, open, and supportive environment. We have some really great people in our club so becoming better is fun and not like a chore or task. I look forward to it. The Toastmasters program education system is a selfdirected program, so each member can make progress at their own pace. This way it can be as challenging as you want it to be because you set the pace. Despite this, we are each encouraged by our mentors within the club to step out of our comfort zone for effective learning, which might be challenging for some. But even with that, the good thing about our club is that members have said, and I agree, that even if they feel nervous, they know they will only get positive vibes and constructive feedback to make them better, and they’re happy they took on the challenge.
Can you tell us a bit about the other current officers, and any other key players in the club? Similar to others, our Toastmasters club has eight officers. The reason there are eight is to spread, load, and expand the leadership opportunities at the club level.
Those eight positions are: president, vice president of education, vice president of membership, vice president of public relations, secretary, treasurer, sergeant at arms, and immediate past president. Other key players in our club are members that have worked hard to earn various designations. There are many, but the highest level is the designation of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). It is a rare level to reach and we have two current members that are DTMs and some on their way to earning it. DTM acknowledges that a member has reached a superior level of achievement in both communication and leadership.
the Toastmaster of the meeting. Any member can sign up to lead a meeting as Toastmaster. The Toastmasters of the day will emcee proceedings for that meeting and choose a theme to guide the meeting, and introduce each activity. A major part of the meeting is the prepared speeches. Members present a speech based on their Toastmasters education manual. Evaluators will give constructive feedback for each speaker. There is a section called table topics where members practice impromptu speeches. The meeting is also supported by members assisting as functionaries such as Ah Counter (who catches filler words and sounds), Grammarian (takes note
What are the club’s future goals? Our goals are to achieve the President Distinguished Club Award in 2020, and to help each of our members develop their leadership skills and reach their educational goals. We have long-term members who are working toward DTM and new members who are up and running to reach their goals, which is exciting to see!
If you could grant the Scripps Teasers Toastmasters Club one wish, what would it be? We have a great environment and energy at Scripps Teasers that I think many people can benefit from. I’d love to see us grow our

From Now Until Maternity Brandy Gardner spent five weeks on bed rest at the Birth Center at Palomar Medical Center Poway to prevent a premature birth of her son, Ethan.
As a professional doula and mother of two, Brandy Gardner knew “what to expect” when she was expecting. Choosing a hospital that could flawlessly handle the unexpected would change the course of her pregnancy and delivery. “My water broke at 31 weeks and I knew if I delivered immediately my baby could potentially have major medical issues,” said Brandy. Brandy selected the Birth Center at Palomar Medical Center Poway because of its personalized service and homelike feel, but she is most grateful for the expertise of its medical professionals. “I spent five weeks on bed rest,” said Brandy. “The labor and delivery team did everything they could to make my experience enjoyable. I was given
exactly what I needed when I needed it. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.” Five weeks later, baby Ethan arrived without complication. Mom and son enjoyed a special “womb to chest” delivery, providing for skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth. “We try to make each mom’s stay the way she wants it to be, not the way we want it to be,” explained Vaneese Cook, Birth Center nurse manager. “Many of our patients have personal birth plans, and we do our best to honor those.” The staff is trained in natural, unmedicated delivery options, and they also practice the “spinning baby technique” to optimize positioning for the birth canal – decreasing labor time and C-section rates. Wireless fetal monitors allow mom to move around

while laboring, and a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is onsite to provide specialized care for newborns as needed. “Most babies born here are delivered by the patient’s own obstetrician – which is an increasingly rare event,” said Cook. “After delivery, a lactation consultant helps mom and baby to succeed with breastfeeding. All of this personalized attention has earned us 98% on our patient satisfaction scores. We’re very proud of our outcomes.” In addition to top-notch medical care, the Birth Center environment feels more like a resort than a hospital. Large private rooms with laboring tubs allow mom to remain in the same space throughout her stay, while pullout couches provide a comfortable space for family members to spend the night.

Where would our community be if we didn’t all help each other and give back? I think if we all help out and pitch in then we could make our community a better place. That is why I joined my school crossing patrol. Every Monday morning, I go in 10 minutes early with two of my friends. We stop traffic so that younger kids can cross the street safely. This volunteer work lets parents know that when their children go to school they are safely crossing the street. It makes me feel good knowing that I can keep kids at my school safe, even if it is just crossing the street.
are thinking about donating to a charity that helps homeless people. We have also helped make our school a “no place for hate school.” DC Kids gives kids the opportunity to help people in need, and to teach kids how to follow the four core values. Outside of school, I have also enjoyed volunteering with other groups. One of those groups is my Girl Scout troop. We have made boxes of art supplies that we donated to children in foster care. We have also gone to Feeding America, where we sorted food and decorated bags to fill with food for kids to take home after school. With my family and friends, I have volunteered at the Ladle, which serves meals to

Deeds for the Deployed As I step inside the Peñasquitos Library, I notice all the content high schoolers teaching five-year-olds how to play chess. They are sharing a laugh in the serenity of the library. This is only one example of how volunteering brings a sense of satisfaction to our community. Our neighborhood of kind citizens holds a special space in my heart. As a locality, we have always made sure to place an emphasis on community service. I am fortunate enough to experience such volunteering experiences firsthand as a Girl Scout Cadette, part of Troop 3141. One specific volunteering experience that changed my perspective was assembling care packages for Operation Courage Is Beautiful. Operation Courage Is Beautiful is a non profit organization that collects donations to create and ship high-quality care packages to women in the military. Many people overlook the fact that women make up a significant part of our military. Most morale-building programs that involve care packages are actually geared toward men in the military. Operation Courage Is Beautiful recognizes that we can do more to boost the spirits of women in our military, and wants to bring more femininity and joy to their lives. The care packages they ship consist of makeup, hygiene products, books, magazines, notes of encouragement, and much more.
Pulling up at a house on Stargaze Avenue, I had no idea about what we were going to do. Our troop leader had signed us up for this activity, and all I remembered was that it involved assembling packages. However, the activity’s leader soon explained that this was more than just dumping miniature shampoos into USPS boxes. This was an initiative to bring delight into the lives of those who sacrificed their lives for us. I quickly got into the rhythm of placing lip balms into packages as they passed by on the assembly line. My focus was interrupted when an elderly woman started talking about her experience in the military. She talked about going on for days without simple necessities like soap. I took a step back and thought about how we take such simple pleasures for granted, while people toiling in dangerous regions don’t even see them for months. After this experience, my perspective about veterans changed. Now when we have to write cards for them in school, I don’t think of the assignment as a burden, but as a pleasure. I feel proud to be protected by lionhearted men and women who lay their lives on the line. I am grateful for those who are behind Operation Courage Is Beautiful, and commend the people of Peñasquitos for gracing our community with such volunteering encounters.
When I was growing up, I’ve always had the notion to remember the happy details in life. This was important to me because I believed some of these precious moments may never happen again. I constantly searched for a way to have a memory pull me out of reality and relive that moment of happiness. The camera is the only device I found. It got the job done, but the memory card felt disorganized. I wanted to archive all my favorite photos into sections on a personal website. That’s where I turned to the Rancho Peñasquitos Library. They were offering classes on web design. I immediately noticed that the leader of the group acted differently from the rest. I asked him a couple of questions and before I knew it, I’ve spent two hours talking about my personal life with a random person after the event was over. This person was so interesting to talk to, I just lost track of time. To this day, I still remember this person. I realized that developing a personal relationship is the best way to capture a memory of a friend forever. That experience altered my mindset with anyone from that point onwards. I greet and thank my teachers every time I enter and leave their classroom. I found the courage to step out of my personal bubble and talk
with strangers. I learned to cherish every moment with friends by spending as much time as possible with them. Now that I’m the founder and President of the 3D Printing Club at Westview, I believe it’s critical to develop these personal relationships with my students so that they too can have a positive memorable experience. So far, my club only teaches at two public libraries every month, one of which is our very own Rancho Peñasquitos Library. But it amazes me to see how just a three-hour session can spark a hidden interest in someone. The joy and excitement I feel from volunteering as a STEAM coach is a transaction that is far off from being replicated from anything else. I’ve made countless memories living in the Rancho Peñasquitos community for my entire life. They have all shaped me to be the way I am today and I am extremely grateful for that. This is my way of passing off what I learned from my role model in the library five years ago. As our society continues to adopt newer technology, my hope in teaching 3D printing with my mindset is to inspire a new wave of engineers so that when they are successful in the future, they can recall their very first experience with 3D printing as coherent as possible.

r. Kami Hoss and The Super Dentists recently announced the opening of their muchanticipated sixth location in Escondido. The new office will feature the first-ever Super Slide for kids (and adults!), transporting them from the main pediatric and orthodontic level to the lower VIP level, where there is a separate lounge and treatment area for teens and parents with amenities like massage chairs, complimentary childcare, aromatherapy, and customized lattes. The Super Dentists team started to make a positive impact in the Escondido community even before the new office opened. They have been making connections with the Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Business Association, Tourism Board, and local businesses and groups such as IcePlex, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, and Girl Scouts. The Super Dentists are a premier sponsor of Grin Land at the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, an exhibit that shows kids that a visit to the dentist doesn’t have to be scary. They also sponsored the Children’s Stage at the Grand Avenue Festival in October, the Escondido Chamber of Commerce’s Community in Unity event in December, and plan to get involved in more Escondido events in the coming year. “Escondido is an amazing community and we’re excited to introduce Escondido families to an out-of-this-world dental experience,” said Dr. Kami Hoss. “We look forward to being a good neighbor and are actively seeking additional opportunities to connect with the Escondido community.” Since 1996, Dr. Kami Hoss and his wife and business partner, Dr. Nazli Keri, have built The Super Dentists into the largest, most trusted, and top-awarded pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and parent dentistry practice in San Diego. All of their dentists who work on kids are specialists in pediatric dentistry, and The Super Dentists use the latest in dental technology to make children’s dental visits more comfortable. The superhero-themed offices feature lounges with games and movies, all with the goal of creating positive associations with going to the dentist. The Super Dentists Escondido office is now open for business and taking appointments. They will host a grand opening celebration for the community in the spring. The event will include a Free Dental Day, where The Super Dentists provide complimentary dental exams to children in need. Technical Team-Up
STUDENTS COLLABORATE FOR ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS
L
ocal FIRST Robotics students celebrated a number of successes late last year, winning multiple awards with their competitive robot. Mechanical Advantage Team 16884 finished in first place at the Dec. 7 Tucson, AZ FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier, along with alliance partner The ROBO Warriors Team 15652. Mechanical Advantage also received the Control Award for programming. Their performance at this event earned them the chance to compete in the Arizona State Championship in Flagstaff, AZ in February. The team then closed out the year at the Central Phoenix Qualifying Tournament in Phoenix, AZ on Dec. 21, earning the first place Design Award and second place Connect Award. These awards

were hard-fought, and Mechanical Advantage had to overcome a major electrical failure during the event. Mechanical Advantage includes team members from multiple local schools: Rohan Bosworth and Madalyn Nguyen from Poway High School; Manjusri Gobiraj, Kaila Rosing, and Christina Schierbeck from Scripps Ranch High School; P.J. Wetherell and Reily Hopkins from Westview High School; Rohin Sood from Oak Valley Middle School; and Arya Bosworth from Black Mountain Middle School. Rohan, Madalyn, and P.J. serve as team captains, and this was the team’s first competitive year in the FIRST Tech Challenge. In addition to competing, Mechanical Advantage mentors younger FIRST Robotics teams, volunteers, and collaborates with sister organization Team Spyder 1622. Or, mark your calendars for some of San Diego’s unique Valentine’s Day events!
FOR THE LOVE OF CHOCOLATE
VALENTINE’S DAY FILM FESTIVAL
Feb. 8, 12 – 5 p.m. | Historic Downtown Escondido
Feb. 14, 7:30 p.m. | Don Powell Theatre, San Diego State University
The Escondido Chocolate Festival is a favorite celebration of all things chocolate. Beyond sampling chocolates from more than 20 shops – complete with wine, beer, and spirits pairings – festival-goers can enjoy chocolate-making classes, live music, glass-blowing demonstrations, and more entertainment.
Student filmmakers from San Diego State University’s School of Theatre, Television, and Film present a series of romantic short films. Bring a date – but leave kids under six at home – for this one-of-a-kind evening, as each filmmaker takes a different approach to filming love.
