Keely & Don
The Big Day: October 17, 2009 THE ROMANCE: Don admits having his eye on Keely long before she noticed him. Mutual friends set them up and Keely finally really looked at Don. “I was like, wow, he’s really handsome!” That night they saw a flyer for Freedom Fest and decided to go. “Our first date was July 4 of 2007,” says Keely. “And yes, there were fireworks!” Don says now, “With the wedding behind us, it’s been a lot more relaxing. It’s wonderful, and I’ve been walking on clouds since. Keely is an amazing person. I just really enjoy our time together and being with her. She’s exciting and a very positive person; she keeps me motivated.” THE CEREMONY: Amidst the beauty of St. Mary’s, Keely’s childhood best friend , Gigi, sang the Mass. During the vows Keely suddenly keyed in on the depth of the moment: “I could barely get out the ‘I, Keely, take you, Don’ part! I was just really choked up.”

THE THEME: Elegant rusticity/bohemian chic. Rust and lilac, with a vintage glam look. Eco-consciousness also played a key role, from the local fare and table number stands Don repurposed from curly willow and salvaged doorknobs from Building Character, invitations printed on cotton Crane Letra stationary rather than paper from trees—even the minimoon destination had a focus on local fare and an eco spa, which was heated by geothermal and solar energy. THE EATS: The chefs at The Marriott started with fresh, local produce similar to items Keely likes to pick up at farmers’ markets and made seasonal fare of: butternut squash bisque with sweet potatoes and celeriac topped with cinnamon crème fraiche; maple-thyme braised quail with apple cider vinaigrette; and roasted root vegetable lasagna with sage bechamel and honey-roasted chestnuts with a roasted carrot emulsion and Basciani Farms mushroom jus topped with crisp carrots. The entrée was inspired by one Keely saw on the menu at
The Sheppard Mansion in Hanover. (She created her own version, which Don jokingly referred to as the “I didn’t know you could eat that” dinner the first couple of times she made it.) THE THREADS: The Bride discovered her dress by happenstance when the couple travelled to New Hope. Keely spotted her dream dress with all the requirements (mermaid style, sweetheart top, low V back, albeit in a blush color), and owner Dominique custom-designed one in the champagne shade she wanted with amazing details like a lace accent empire waist that wrapped around the back. The Groom, Don, 6’2” and slim, finds it hard to buy off the rack. Les Schwartzberg of Les Richards in Philadelphia used details like handpicked stitching along the lapels paired with the espresso herringbone stripe fabric and a custom pearlescent basket weave shirt (complete with the left sleeve larger to fit around Don’s watch). “They made Don feel like a million bucks on our wedding day and he looked like it too.” THE BLING: Keely would occasionally sing “Forever and Ever, Amen” by Randy Travis just to bother non-country fan Don, but secretly—and coincidentally—they had those very words inscribed in the other’s ring. When they played it at the wedding, Keely’s mom and step-father stole the show with an authentic two-step.
An elegantly rustic fall affair in downtown Lancaster. Accoutrements like cut paper leaves, curly willow, deep purple artichoke centerpieces, salvaged door knobs, quilted fondant with burnt orange pearls and ostrich feathers added to the bohemian chic vibe.
THE GLITCH AND THE SERENDIPITY: A motif woven throughout the wedding was artichokes, with Keely set on using artichoke flowers. But the artichoke farmer mowed them down and moved to France without telling Keely—who found out a week and a half before the wedding. Not good. Her florist, Kim McNabb, saved the day with beautiful purple artichokes, and shortly things were back in perspective. As they practiced their vows that same night at the church, Keely realized that, “at the end of the day, all of this is about the wedding, the sacrament of marriage and the spiritual bond that will hold us together for the rest of our lives.” THE FIND: Melissa Weiler of Persnickety handmade a line of paper goods (including rust and lilac save the date cards, bachelor party and bridal shower invites, custom color letterpress wedding invitations, programs, table numbers and favor boxes) along with a sign for a seasonal drink Keely’s sister and maid of honor, Brittney, came up with and Don named “Penn Square Spiked Cider”: apple cider with amaretto and a touch of triple sec. SPECIAL TOUCHES: Keely’s mother, who lives in Washington state, wanted to help. Inspired by a Martha Stewart photo, Keely put her mom, her sister and her stepdad to work for a year creating hanging paper leaf wreaths for the reception. THE TUNES: An eclectic mix courtesy of Keely and Don’s iPod. Couple’s dance: a nontraditional song Don played for Keely the night he proposed—Ani DiFranco’s “Smiling Underneath.” (We could be stuck in traffic for over a week. With a car full of quintuplets who are all cuttin’ teeth. And around my neck could be a flaming Christmas wreath. And I’d be smiling underneath.); Father’s dance: Led Zeppelin’s “All My Love”; Mother’s pick for her dance with Don: Carly Simon’s “Love of my Life”. THE QUOTE: Groomsman Ray: “Here’s to geek meets chic.” Don recalls, “It was hilarious; I am a bit of a geek; I get to work with the latest and greatest audio-visual stuff, and I’m a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy. Keely is the stylish one.”

Bridgit & Ryan
The Big Day: July 18, 2009 THE PROPOSAL: The day before Thanksgiving, Ryan set the dining table, prepared dinner, and bought champagne. Afterward he drew a letter he’d written to Bridgit from under his placemat. (All she would tell us was that it was “a very romantic letter.”) Then Ryan knelt, saying, “I know it’s not the most romantic holiday, but Thanksgiving is the perfect time to tell you how thankful I am for you.” THE THEME: Sweet & natural. Orange and purple, rustic with a retro flair and a splash of vintage charm along with many hand-made items. “Nothing is sweeter than love,” said a bag of custom-designed lemonade mix at each place setting. THE CEREMONY: Wind in the Willows in Grantville. Open and peaceful with the focus on the beautiful scenery.

Bridgit was grateful for the perfect weather for her outdoor wedding despite the forecast for rain. THE DETAILS: Bridgit created many of the embellishments herself, including purple feather centerpieces, citrus place cards, wine menus, and white paper lanterns banded with ribbons and flowers along the aisle. Together, the day before the wedding, she and Ryan strung twinkling lights and colorful paper lanterns in the barn. Another personal touch was the bride’s jewelry, all handmade by her aunt, including a lovely down-the-back strand of silver and pearls. COOLEST ACCESSORY: As they shopped for tuxes, Ryan joked that he would love to wear sneakers. Surprisingly, Bridgit declared that all of the groomsmen should wear them. The guys
were thrilled, and when the maid of honor found them online (a steal, reduced from $80 to $19.99), the joke became reality. SPECIAL BOND: Ryan, a single dad, waited several months before introducing Bridgit to his son, Rydan (shown here as the ring bearer). Ryan recalls,“I knew Bridgit was the right one for me on May 19, 2008. She took a vacation day to watch Rydan, remarkable since most people wouldn’t enjoy doing that for someone else’s 4-year-old. I remember pulling up in front of Bridgit’s apartment after work. The two of them were sitting on the front steps blowing bubbles. From a distance I could tell Rydan was having a blast, and Bridgit was smiling ear to ear. It was very evident to me on that day that Bridgit not only loved me but loved my son like he was her own. To this day when I see the two of them playing with each other it makes my heart melt.” THE HITCHES: Ryan was so nervous he says he“got the vows twisted so bad they almost sounded correct”. (As far as they can tell, Bridgit was the only one who noticed:“It made for a great little secret between Bridgit and me. Well, up until I told the magazine.”) THE FINDS: Online shopping! Etsy.com became the source for bridesmaids’ accessories and purses, bride’s hair piece and feather purse, and a hand-made stamp for the place cards. Antique compact mirrors, each one a little different, ordered from an eBay seller in Hong Kong (the shipping cost more than the mirrors). SERENDIPITY: The couple are “not cake people” but rather “hard core ice cream lovers,” so they surprised their guests with an ice cream bar and no cake. Ryan decided they needed to be entertained while they waited in line…and launched what Bridgit politely refers to as “a little bit of a whipped cream battle.” THE QUOTE: Ryan’s best man, Tori: “Ryan, I’ll always be your best man, but today you have a new best friend.” THE SLOW-MO THEN FAST-MO GET-AWAY: Wanting to spend time with their guests, the bride and groom were among the last to leave the reception. The next morning, with about 3 hours of sleep, they left really early for Jamaica and were on the beach just after noon on Sunday. “Yeah, mon,” laughs Ryan, “the only shoes I wore there were the wedding sneakers.” HOMETOWN TOUCH: The couple chose several sweet wines from their hometown winery, Benigna’s Creek, Klingerstown (above Harrisburg and near towns actually named “Rough and Ready” and “Fearnot”).
A bucolic barn reception with retro flair. Quirky touches such as sneakers with tuxes, an ice cream bar, lemonade mix favors and other details handmade by the event planner bride made for a wedding with personalized panache.

Samantha & Chris 90
weddings in style 2010
The Big Day: June 6, 2009 THE RELATIONSHIP: Even though he was sure long before then, Chris felt this about their dance at the wedding: “Our first dance made me realize I married the right woman…it was everything wrapped into one. It was the most comfortable I have ever been in an uncomfortable moment.”
THE THEME: The overall idea of the wedding was “Ever After.” A butterfly motif was inspired by the butterfly garden at Hershey and was repeated throughout, most notably on the flower girls. Sami, who has no sisters, thought it would be fun to be surrounded by girls, so there were four of them (two sets of sisters).
THE PROPOSAL: Chris, an avid fan whose job now revolves around lacrosse, took Sami to Boston last May for the National Lacrosse Championships. Sami had suspected this was the weekend for the big question, “but two days went by and…nothing. I was about to go through his briefcase to make sure he really had the ring.” But in the middle of the day they went for a run near Quincy Market, and Chris was able to surprise her with the proposal after all.
THE CEREMONY: “There aren’t enough words to describe getting married at the Hotel Hershey. We went to bed with chocolate bars on our pillows and woke up to fresh fruit, bagels and chocolate butter.” Getting married surrounded by 7,500 blooming roses was an experience Sami will always cherish. Although the feel was that of a formal garden party, the bride’s pastor set a more casual, interactive tone during the ceremony, and at one point, the bride and groom actually did a high-five.
SPECIAL TOUCH: Instead of a champagne toast, the bride and groom personalized the moment with a chocolate milk toast (in honor of their own taste and, of course, the locale). THE RECEPTION: After the ceremony and photographs, the flower girls “frolicked through the gardens ringing bells” to call guests to the reception. At each setting was a Hershey’s chocolate bar specially made to say “heretheyare,” Chris and Sami Snyder. Large wine glasses were filled with limes, blooms, and diamond embellishments. Limes topped with glass covered the guestbook table. THE DETAILS: Scepters with purple ribbons lined the aisle, and across the top of the program fans was written, “Every happy ending is a brand new beginning”. THE SERENDIPITY: Chris and his mom twirled and dipped to “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You.” Sami was surprised: “Out of nowhere Chris turned into this amazing dancer. I had no idea!” THE FIND: Mom (Cheryl of Rhythm and Hues) is amazing. We have been planning my wedding for years, cutting out pictures from magazines, seeing ideas at flower shows, trying to make everything unique and special. Mom always works from her heart, giving each bride everything she dreams and more. For me, it was a fairytale wedding dream come true.
A fairytale wedding dream come true. An “Ever After” theme amid 7,500 blooming roses at The Hershey Gardens was sweetened by details like a chocolate milk toast.
THE HITCH: Since it had rained the whole week, the people who set up the tent had to switch the placement of our sweetheart table because of a patch of mud. Unfortunately, that meant it leaned slightly downhill. When the bride and groom sat down, Chris knocked the table slightly and his chocolate milk flute shattered. Everything on the table came crashing down toward them. It was embarrassing, but amazingly enough, Sami’s gown was spared. THE TUNES: Sami’s brother, Tyler, sang Clint Black’s “When I Said I Do.” But before he started, he said he needed a little help from “his boys.” On cue, all of the groomsmen lit their lighters and held them up for the whole song. The first dance was to “The Way You Look Tonight” (the version Kris Allen sang on American Idol). Sami explains, “Halfway through the song it changes from a slow melodic song to an upbeat jazz style. We danced traditionally through the first half, and then jazzed it up toward the end—totally unplanned and unrehearsed.” THE QUOTE: Early in the morning on the day of the wedding, Sami texted her little brother Connor to make sure they were awake and on their way. His reply? “I’m awake, I’m awake, and don’t worry…I’m towing the sun behind me!” About that time, Sami noticed that the sun began to shine. THE GET-AWAY: Rather than honeymoon right away, Chris and Samantha took their bridal party to Hersheypark for the evening. Then the new Mr. and Mrs. Snyder stayed in the honeymoon suite. That week they moved to Baltimore; then they went on their honeymoon to St. Lucia.

STORY BY Cindy Kalinoski PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jason Plotkin
Kim & Ian
The Big Day: August 15, 2009 THE ROMANCE: Kim and Ian met at a polo match in Palm Beach when Kim, who always wears at least 4-inch heels (tricky on turf ), asked if she could sit down with Ian’s mom. Her son turned out to be Ian—all 6’3” of him. For the wedding, Kim, who is 4’11”, wore 6-inch heels. THE QUESTION: Ian proposed while Kim was visiting on an otherwise typical day. He had “all these big plans of how and where to propose,” but simply told Kim,“Ever since you came into my life you’ve made my house a home.” Kim: “I’ll remember that for the rest of my life. It was awesome.” THE THEME: While Kim would have been happy getting married offshore (a cruise ship, maybe), Ian wanted a formal with a served dinner. Since they tied the knot at a library, they carried the literary theme onto the program and even used the library check-out desk as a bar.
94
weddings in style 2010
THE TAKEAWAY: Ian says, “Marrying Kim was an incredible thrill all on its own, but the magic of our wedding day was beyond anything I had imagined. The attention to every detail, the amazement in everyone’s eyes, and the glow of love on every face set the stage the happiest day of my life. But it was the look on Kim’s face the whole day that I remember. I am the luckiest man I know, and I cannot wait to live the rest of our lives together.” THE TAKEAWAY: Kim says, “I was praising God the whole time to have brought me to that moment and to be blessing my marriage. I sensed the Spirit of God and all the energy of our friends and family and so much love and happiness and Ian’s joy. And that this was what was supposed to happen in my life. I was overwhelmed with gratitude.”
THE THREADS: Kim’s dress shopping experience “was an awesome mother/daughter process that I will always cherish.” She wore an Escala gown from Renaissance Bridals in York. For a fun touch, the guys wore socks that said, “Groomsmen,” “Groom,” and “Father of the Bride.” THE DETAILS: Kim, a veteran event planner, admits she got a bit carried away with these, including an original monogram with rhinestones carried through on “just about everything,” even on the cards at each table describing places the couple had visited together. They also offered valet parking and slipped a thank you note in each car and under the doors of their hotel guests to thank them for coming. THE HITCH: This couple’s “hitch” worked out so well the bride couldn’t remember it until we questioned her. They originally booked a different venue in October 2008 but were informed in April that there was a double-booking. So Kim thought of the library, a special place to Ian and Kim, who live about a block away. “Fran Keller was incredible at making the wedding happen there,” and it looked so great that it was hard for the guests to remember they were actually in a library. THE FIND: Erin, the wedding day coordinator, was “extremely patient and competent” in carrying out Kim’s “very specific” personalizations. But true synergy emerged among the photography studio, the House of Clarendon and Erin. Using crystal trees, draping, a twirly “gobo” light reflection and other imaginative details (and moving the entire audio/video section), they created an unexpectedly glamorous setting all in four hours after the library closed. THE TUNES: A harpist played before the vows, Kim’s cousin surprised them as they left the ceremony with a rendition of “That’s Amore” on her violin, and bridesmaid Leslie Streeter sang “At Last” while the cake was cut. Ian and Kim’s dance lessons showed as they fox-trotted to “It Had to Be You”…but they subtly cut it short because they kept stepping on the gown.
A White Rose city event to remember. White roses, diamond accents, feathers, black brocade motifs and an entire black and white candy buffet all contributed to setting the tone.
THE GET-AWAY: Deliberately slow. They delayed the honeymoon for several days to spend time with friends and family in town for the wedding and relax a bit before taking off. Kim: “I HIGHLY recommend this.” GIFT TWISTS: In addition to being registered at Macy’s, the Phillips suggested ideas on their wed-site for honeymoon gifts. (Think sailing excursions, kayaking, snorkeling.) “It was very fun because it not only allowed us to try some things, but it helped make it even more special to think about who had given us these presents throughout our trip.”

weddings in style 2010
The Big Day: September 5, 2009 THE MOVE: Christina and Willem met working for the same company in Vancouver. Both Canada natives, they were intrigued when a Lancaster manufacturer bought their company and offered relocation. Willem says: “There was no doubt in our relationship we were going to be together forever,” and, with hindsight, adds that “it was the right time for us to move here together.” But when he came to check out the area, he wasn’t so sure: “I was really scared because I came up back country roads from Philly and never saw the city. I remember calling Christina, saying, “All I see is farms. I don’t know if we can do this!” A second visit, with the help of a Lancaster city ambassador, “helped us fall in love with the city, and we knew this would be a cool opportunity.” Willem moved here in August 2008, Christina came in October, and in November, he proposed.
THE PROPOSAL: The couple spent Thanksgiving in Chicago, with Willem planning to propose at the top of the Sears Tower. Their first encounter with Black Friday exhausted Christina:“It was the craziest shopping experience I’ve ever had! It’s not that big in Canada.” So when Willem suggested heading downtown for dinner and then the Sears Tower, she was incredulous. She agreed, though, and ended up “having to sit through all the history of the tower.” Cranky by then, she didn’t notice the crisis at the security checkpoint: the ring in Willem’s pocket set off the alarm, and the guard kept insisting he empty his pockets. Finally Willem snuck behind the by-now extremely wary guard, told him to look in his pocket…and the guard simply said, “Congratulations.” Christina, revived by the view, was rushing around taking pictures, while Willem was trying to get her attention. Finally he knelt and said,“I’m trying to say something here!” Christina observes,“Just to think: I could have been proposed to at the security checkpoint.”
THE CEREMONY: Traditional Filipino meets American Catholicism. The Filipino tradition involves sponsors to help you throughout your marriage; some sponsors actually perform parts of the ceremony. Three elements remind the couple of their commitment: coins (originally symbolizing the husband supporting the family, now meaning they would both support the family together); a veil, placed over the couple, representing God’s covering, protection and love; and a cord to portray eternity and their new unity. THE RECEPTION: A traditional Filipino “prosperity dance” gave guests an opportunity to dance with the bride and groom, pinning money on them to wish them good fortune and help them begin their new life. “It’s actually a fantastic way to be able to talk to people throughout the wedding.” THE HITCH: The prosperity dance was unexpectedly popular. They had anticipated only two songs, which they had to keep playing over and over until they finally said to stop.
An intimate dinner party celebration. The couple chose to share their love of food with their 50 guests at John J. Jeffries at The Lancaster Arts Hotel. An around-town wedding day photo shoot captured memories of the Canada-natives’ new life in Lancaster.
SPECIAL MOMENTS: Both parents toasted them, with Willem’s “acknowledging Christina’s character being a result of her upbringing and her faith.” Christina, who “didn’t think my brother and I could get any closer,” felt that bond continue to deepen throughout the week-long wedding events, which included a rehearsal BBQ dinner with “special food our moms cook” (Willem’s parents are from St. Kitt) and other get-togethers. THE TUNES: By request, Willem sang “The Nearness of You,” accompanying himself on piano, which he has sung for Christina throughout their dating relationship. SOMETHING OLD & BORROWED: Christina’s mom wrapped her rosary around the bridal bouquet; her matron of honor, whose 10-year wedding anniversary was the day before the wedding, pinned her bridal pearls inside the bride’s gown. As for something blue: it’s a secret (Victoria’s). A GUY THING: Willem and his best man attended college together on track and field scholarships, so they headed to the F&M track “just to prove we still had it.” When asked who won, the groom replied, “Of course I did.” FAVORS: In lieu of favors, the bride and groom made a charitable donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lancaster. THE THEME: Sharing everything that inspired them. Great music and great food (local ingredients with Indian/middle-eastern cuisine included grilled “Friendly Farm” organic free-range chicken with curry marinade, forbidden black rice and peach chutney; Cressbrook Farms grass-fed dry aged beef steak with chimichurri; plus a Moroccan theme in the lounge.“The whole thing was to help our family and friends to understand us and our relationship, and we wanted this to be a memento of our time here.”

ou’ve thought about your wedding since you were a little girl. Then you thought about the man of your dreams and you found him. And you thought that this day would never come, but it has. So don’t stop thinking when you are planning the details of your wedding. Instead, think of the things that best describe you and your soon-tobe husband. What is your style? What is your passion? Who are you as a couple? Identify the things that make you and your groom the perfect pair. Remember, it’s the thought that counts, and make sure that your wedding day is a thoughtful expression of your love and your life together.
TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY
Perhaps the best reflection of a bride and who she is is her wedding gown. This dress speaks volumes about who she is, who she sees herself as and what image she is trying to relay at her wedding. Bridal gowns come in many shapes, silhouettes and styles, in numerous fabrications and colors, but the one that a bride chooses for herself is one of the most important choices of her wedding. This year, bridal designers take inspiration from the likes of glamorous fashion icons (think Grace Kelly) and vintage-inspired television shows (like Mad Men), creating romantic designs that appeal to many women for their special day. Dresses are fitting closer to the body; fitted and flared silhouettes are the most popular this season. Says

Elizabeth Wertz, owner of Classic Weddings Bridal Salon, Lititz (717-627-8589; www.classicwed.com), “Fabric treatments including folding, pleating and ruching are taking the place of beaded ornamentation on gowns. Dresses have stronger shapes, from a bias cut gown to mermaid styles.“ Also popular in bridal couture are one shoulder gowns and higher necklines, all reminiscent of the 1940s and ‘50s. In classic colors of white, ivory and champagne, wedding gowns make any bride wearing them feel glamorous and beautiful. When it comes to the bride’s accessories, fashionable fun comes into play. Wertz says that short and single-tiered veils are most dominant, with crystal trims to complement simple gowns. Simple crystal headbands and small hair pieces are also popular. “As a rule, it’s small, whatever brides are wearing in their hair,” says Wertz. Another hint of fun is brides wearing colored shoes (in most cases the color of their bridesmaid dresses) under their traditional colored gowns. Bridesmaid dresses have a retro feeling this season. Just like wedding gowns, these dresses are full of fabric detailing and special treatments that keep

them from looking ordinary. Plus, shorter lengths and bright colors create a less formal and more approachable feeling to the bridal party. Colors including orange, green, royal blue and yellow are popular, showing the energy and vibrancy of the couple getting married. Pair these brights with the new haute wedding color, gray, and your bridal party will have a winning color combination: Fun, flirty and ‘50s inspired. Brides can select a dress for their friends that will play into the overall theme that they’ve chosen for their upcoming wedding.
ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE Your wedding invitation should be the vehicle that sets the mood for your special day. With so many options, there is bound to be a unique design or a sophisticated font that exemplifies you and your partner. Whether it is a bold and graphic patterned invite or a hand drawn, hand lettered announcement, invitations convey a good deal of information about your wedding, just by the image they show. Be quirky by using fonts in a bold way or show your natural side by selecting an invitation that is rustic and eclectic. No matter what you choose, make sure it echoes the style you want for your wedding. Michael Musser, owner of AnticipateInvitations.com, says, “A lot of couples are choosing vintage themes for their invitations. There is a lot of inspiration from the 1920s and 1930s.” Musser also suggests using vintage stamps on the envelopes to bring the theme full

People are also looking at ways to be more cost effective when they are selecting their table designs for weddings. Brides want to give a great impression, but don’t necessarily want to spend a lot of money to do so. Butera suggests using three or four “wow” pieces in your décor, complemented by smaller, affordable arrangements. As Butera says, “You want to create a sense of visual excitement for your guests, but you can still stay in your budget.”

BEST LAID PLANS While planning a wedding may seem like a daunting task, it’s good to keep it in perspective. Lori Hemphill of The Perfect Plan in Millersville (717-872-9068; www.theperfectplanbylh.com) says, “Always keep sight of what the day is about—two people becoming one. And having everyone celebrate you.” And with that in mind, Hemphill encourages brides and grooms to make their wedding a reflection of the couple. Every part of the wedding should involve things that the couple loves or enjoys. Whether it be a personal touch like a favorite color, an activity that the bride and groom like to do together (think ballroom dancing or salsa), or a signature drink, personal tidbits make the experience a mirror image of who the bride and groom are. For those couples who just want to be completely

unique, Hemphill suggests thinking out of the box— from the timing of the wedding to the details. “I try to get brides to try different things, like seeing each other before walking down the aisle. Create the special moment prior to the ceremony. It makes it more private and intimate,” she says. Other ideas include a cocktail hour prior to the wedding ceremony or having the bride and groom greet their guests when they arrive for the event, instead of in a receiving line afterwards. People stepping out of their comfort zone, away from the traditions, can make for a great wedding.
NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT Wedding cakes are the sweetest part of a wedding day. But wedding trends come and go, and the cake remains elegant, sophisticated and delicious. White on white styles with swirls and contemporary designs are the prevalent wedding cakes that brides are selecting this season. Karen Rodkey, owner of Karen Rodkey Cakes in Littlestown (717-359-5040; www.karenrodkeycakes.com), says, “Cakes always seem to be beautiful and simple on the outside. But the personality of the bride and groom lies within the layers. Couples are now choosing different cake flavors for each tier of a cake. This seems to appease every guest.” For more of a variety, multi-layered cakes pair popular flavors like chocolate and almond pound with more complex flavors like chocolate Chambord and hazelnut with ganache. Just when we thought that love couldn’t be any sweeter! A wedding is a look at the two people who are coming together as one couple. It’s important that the bride and groom think about what they want their wedding day to say about them. It’s all of those thoughts that are the best reflection of newlyweds. W

he first thing you notice walking into the Lancaster spa Luxe is the light. A soaring bank of windows illuminates the chic space, popping the inventive color scheme of light blue and orange, warm brown and hot pink, as it glints off the stainless steel Italian fixtures and cream accents. Already you feel glamorous. Which is exactly the effect co-owners Ana Kitova and Lani Benner are going for, infusing their sleek space with a modern energy and excitement. Clean, urban design; subtly scented candles and reed diffusers; retro pop; and an assortment of tasty beverages all contribute to the pre-appointment spoiling, heightening all your senses for the pleasure to come. Tranquility aesthetic facials begin with a deep breath to inhale the bright aromatherapy treatment, setting the stage for total relaxation. As each of the series of products is applied to work its magic, scalp, shoulder, arm, hand and leg rejuvenating massages as well as foot reflexology are employed to complement the expansive beautifying treatment. Pure extravagance. How can you help but glow afterward? Which is why Luxe is so popular with bridal parties, who like the coupling of fashion photo shoot quality styling with the total immersion in physical sensory indulgence. Glam experts style from head to toe with intricate up-dos, body polishing and spray tanning, and total Luxe manicures and pedicures. Skin and massage specialists rejuvenate with detoxifying body wraps, deep tissue massages, and hydromemory facial treatments. Couples enjoy the luxurious soothing massage suite with its sideby-side tables, says Kitova, noting that booking the room is a popular Valentine’s Day or anniversary gift to one another. Spa parties also make use of the expansive, yet intimate, open space, which allows for girls-day-out conversation throughout the pampering process. As your senses are delighted, what’s most noticeable is what you don’t smell. The air is blessedly free of the heavy chemical product aroma that lingers in so many salons. There’s nothing harsh here. Even the nail polishes and the hair colorings are organic and eco-friendly, making the environment kinder to clients and workers alike. And the hair extensions are created with human hair, not synthetics. “When we created this concept, we wanted to do something different,” says Kitova. “Nobody in Lancaster was doing anything like this.” Green design and an eco-conscious sensibility shaped this place from the start, from reusing industrial space in the former Slaymaker Lock factory, to using renewable bamboo flooring and natural lighting, to product lines that are organic and earth-friendly. “Everything we do has to fit with an eco-concept,” says Kitova, who notes that the spa even refills product containers for customers, cutting down on plastic waste and saving them money. “And all the containers we have already contain 60 percent less plastic than usual.” Their insistence on creating a healthier environment goes beyond the building materials and product lines they carry to a more holistic approach to customers and employees alike. “We want to help people take care of their own health, feeling beautiful from the inside out,” says Benner. “If we can help teach people to take better care of themselves now, we don’t have to try and repair damage in the future.” — Daina Savage

he Spa at the Hotel Hershey is a resort spa inside the hotel, a dignified edifice reminiscent of a European manor, with a beautiful formal garden highlighted with two small reflecting pools. White gazebos stand at the corners of the pool garden. At night, lights around the perimeter of the pool are lit, and with the classical music floating through the gardens, it isn’t hard to imagine you’re in Europe. Hotel guests take advantage of the dozens of services offered by the spa, but many guests are also day spa visitors. Included in day spa services are the hotel’s fitness center, dry sauna, indoor swimming pool and whirlpool. Within the spa area itself are men’s and women’s locker rooms, a steam room, a silent relaxation room, a quiet room with refreshments and an inhalation (aromatherapy) room. The quiet room has an outdoor porch that overlooks the formal gardens, or you can sit inside by the fireplace. Crystal bowls of Hershey’s Kisses are within reach at almost every turn. The Spa at the Hotel Hershey offers three groupings of spa services that sum up three areas that were important to Milton and Catherine Hershey. Of course, the Hershey name means chocolate to most people, so “Everything Chocolate” includes just what it says. Then there is the “Cuban Experience” that references Milton Hershey’s love of Cuba, where he owned sugar plantations and mills. And finally, ”Country Abundance” offers services that group the rose gardens, meadows and fresh milk from Pennsylvania farmlands that Hershey and his wife so loved. The signature spa services are full of cocoa and chocolate, of course. For chocolate lovers, it’s not hard to guess what puts the “ahh” in this spa. If you haven’t quaffed enough hot cocoa or enjoyed enough Hershey’s Kisses, you can have your pores slathered in chocolate (or at least its scent) so that you seemingly absorb it into your very soul. The “Chocolate Immersion” is a popular selection from the “Everything Chocolate” theme. The immersion begins in a private Vichy room, in which a guest disrobes and dons some discreetly placed towels while lying on the spa table covered in plastic. A spa therapist then joins the guest and begins the chocolate bean polish. This delicious concoction of cocoa bean shell, walnut shell and a creamy base is rubbed gently on all exposed parts of the torso, arms and legs. It has a delightful aroma and an invigorating texture that exfoliates the skin. After the polish is rinsed, the therapist then begins the chocolate fondue wrap. This part is also known as moor mud that is scented with chocolate. Once again, the guest is covered with the concoction that looks much like brownie batter. The guest is then wrapped, cocoon-like, in the plastic, covered by an insulating blanket, covered by a wool blanket, and left to baste in the mineral-rich earthen substance in the dimly lit room for about 20 minutes. After being unwrapped from the cocoon, the guest is then rinsed clean with the seven-head Vichy shower arm that is swung above the spa table. Lastly, a wonderful cocoa scented cream is applied by the therapist resulting in decidedly smooth and hydrated skin. For those who don’t like chocolate, there are many choices, such as a jasmine-scented scrub, a sugar lime scrub and a scrub made of sea salts and coffee, all from the “Cuban Experience.” Or from the “Country Abundance” theme, choose a milk-and-honey wrap, an herb, flowers and sea salt scrub or the Hershey Gardens rose petal soak. — Maria Coole

elaxing in Leola’s rustic setting, Destinations Spa is bucolic and refined. Nods to the Lancaster County farmland surrounding are integrated into the spa’s design with touches like sliding barn doors, distressed beams and warm wood accents—even vegetable shaped pillows dot the plush chairs in the lounge area. The tea room, too, has a tasteful country feeling that’s provincial and perfect for bridal parties to pack a picnic lunch to share while spending a relaxing afternoon of pampering before the big day. La Terra Bakery, Antipasto Bar and Restaurant Mazzi are also great options for grabbing a bite to eat during your spa day visit and are conveniently located in the Leola Village. If luxury is what you’re looking for, Leola Village Inn and Spa has got you covered whether you stay just the day or all night. It has been awarded four diamonds by the AAA Travel and Tourism Organization, as well as accolades from Conde Nast Traveler and Philadelphia Magazine, which named it “12th Best Weekend Getaway Escapes of the East Coast Inns and Spa.” Whether it’s a day of mani-pedis for a bride-to-be and her bridesmaids, a girls’ day of pampering, or just a treat to yourself and perhaps a loved one, Destinations has just what you need to get away from it all for a day. There’s even “Wine Therapy.” And this is definitely not how you unwind at home with your favorite Pinot. The wine-inspired collection of services at Destinations includes a mimosa champagne body massage, in which the body is caressed in ingredients like apricot and mimosa oils; there’s a champagne mimosa body scrub using champagne grapes and raw sugarcane combined with oranges; or, for red wine lovers, there’s the Italian Chianti and grape seed body scrub. To get that wedding day or any day glow, the radianza pomice buccia facial uses a natural alternative to microdermabrasion, using a gentle mineral gommage in tandem with natural clay, an enzyme mask,

he moment you exchange your street clothes for this spa’s cushy white robe, your stress relief begins. Say goodbye to multi-tasking and hello to fully engaged relaxation. To begin with, the subtle background music, the cherry blossom décor and the welcoming staff establish a kinder, gentler world. One you perhaps won’t want to leave…but one that prepares you to return to your life renewed. Meet Kathleen, for example. Calm and pleasant, Kathleen is thoroughly professional. (She is also the manager’s mother.) As she nurtures your skin with the best natural ingredients, she nurtures your soul with her practiced touch. You might begin with a pumpkin glow body wrap. A scented sugar exfoliant is followed by a warmed hydrating clay, massaged into your skin. Next a series of towels enfold you while you experience light reflexology on your head. This is, simply, bliss. You’ve made the transition into someone really, really relaxed. botanicals and rich sea minerals to nourish, hydrate and regenerate skin. An oxygenating treatment, another facial option, uses powerful antioxidants like algae and vitamin C to improve skin clarity and texture, helping you resist premature aging and hyper-pigmentation to achieve a more youthful look. Massage and body therapy treatments range from Swedish, aromatherapy and hot stone to a Chinese herb exfoliating gommage and the elemente del mare, a Spirulina algae wrap followed by a stimulating bath of seaweed and eucalyptus oils and a mineral lotion massage. And not to forget the guys, Destinations offers men’s facials, manicures, pedicures, massages and more. Plus, The Art of Shaving line of services offers an indulgent experience from a bygone era. Destinations’ day spa line Bioelements is a professional-only product based on all-natural elements. It does not contain irritating artificial colors, fragrances or mineral oils that can clog the pores, nor does it contain animal byproducts, and the company does not perform animal testing. The formulas contain only good stuff like plant extracts, 100 percent pure essential oils, and high performance ingredients. The Spa-ritual polishes used for manicures and pedicures are vegan, free of the toxins found in most nail polishes: formaldehyde, toluene and DBP, or dibutyl phthalate, a plasticizer that makes nail polish flexible and longer lasting but that has been linked in some studies to cancer and other problems with newborns. The only downside is that without the chemicals, the polish doesn’t last quite as long. While the benefits of your manicure can last up to a couple of weeks, your polish may only last about four days—a small sacrifice to make for your overall well being. — Keely Childers Heany

If you like massage, the staff are trained in Eastern and Western modalities and tailor the session to your needs, from Russian sports, deep tissue and triggerpoint to swedish techniques, aromatherapy and hot stone massage. Following a wrap or massage, Kathleen recommends a facial. And not just a “sit in this chair over here while I work on you facial.” We’re talking a “go ahead and get yourself comfortable on this heated bed while we pamper your skin and massage your arms and neck facial.” Applying luxurious cleansers, exfoliaters and moisturizers takes considerable time and attention, all of which you’ll appreciate. If you like, you can learn about the various products and their benefits. Or you can just await calming statements like, “I’m going to apply some papaya resurfacing skinzyme now.” A trained esthetician, Kathleen is excited about the ground-breaking discoveries in her field. She delights in transforming your skin, a benefit she has seen increases not only your self-image but also the number of compliments you get. Sometime during the day, you can order a Grilled Ahi Tuna Ciabatta up to the spa or head downstairs to Ironwoods for a Strawberry & Goat Cheese Salad with Sweet Potato Fries. By now, you might think you’ve had enough rejuvenation. But you’re not finished yet. There are still fingers and toes that could use pampering. From the massaging pedicure chair with your feet relaxing in a warm gingerbread bubble bath, you can choose your nail color. Dark cherry cream? Sparkling Periwinkle? At Serenity Spa, you can feel adventurous enough to try something new. What’s also great about this spa is that you can prepare for any occasion from head to toe in the salon. While it’s hard to believe the ambiance could improve, they’re planning a significant expansion. Imagine what they’ll dream up there. — Cindy Kalinoski

hen I walked into my first consultation with medical aesthetician Adrienne Wright of the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Lancaster, I told her, “I’m not into high maintenance skin care.” In fact, I admitted that on occasion, I’ve even gone to bed with my makeup still on! It was June; I had already been to the shore once and was sporting a slight summer tan. I was in pretty bad shape, skin-wise, I figured. I’m in my late 20s, so I’m starting to show some signs of aging—laugh lines, crow’s feet, wrinkles in my forehead, plus all of the sun damage from those teenage lifeguard years! But Adrienne assured me, “This is the time to prevent. Prevention is so much easier and less expensive than correction.” With a quick
questionnaire about my skin type: “Is it dry in the winter and where? Is it oily in the summer? What about in the ‘T’ zone?” And so she began to construct a game plan to get my skin glowing for my wedding day in mid-October (see Real Weddings, page 82). We had just over four months. Adrienne first recommended I begin a consistent skin care regimen—for a few reasons. One, because when we switch products all the time, our skin is constantly confused, she says. In addition, to fight the early signs of aging, I needed an antioxidant. The Obagi-C Rx line of products she recommended for me had everything I needed to keep my young skin looking young. “It’s the gold standard of dermatological skin care,” she says. “The Obagi-C system normalizes skin and keeps young skin behaving young.”
The Obagi-C Rx system is comprised of a vitamin C infused cleanser, to be used day and night; a potent vitamin C serum to protect against free radicals like sun and smoke, which accelerate aging; a day cream, which acts as an exfoliator; SPF 30 sunblock; and a night cream with hydroquinone to lighten sun damage and any discolorations of the skin such as acne scarring, plus it contains vitamins C and E to aid in overnight skin renewal. The difference between the Obagi products and other over the counter products is in the potency, and thus in the effectiveness. Take for example the C-Clarifying Serum: It claims to be the only serum on the market that contains 4 percent hydroquinone plus vitamin C serum with L-ascorbic acid vitamin C. What does that mean? “Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent,” explains Adrienne, “which targets hyper-pigmented or sun damaged skin cells.” The Obagi line claims to penetrate all three dermal layers to reduce melanosome activity while promoting more even skin tone and providing potent antioxidant therapy. A little concerned about the hydroquinone bleaching agent, I jokingly asked,“Is this going to make me have Michael Jackson skin?” Adrienne assured me it would only target sun damage and acne scars, and I quickly found out for myself.

Microderms are probably the easiest, quickest pick me up After one month of using the Obagi-C skin care system, I had definitely noticed a difference. My skin was looking more radiant–and my summer freckles were disappearing! Many of us have tried products like Proactive to target those once-a-month breakouts and the scarring they can leave behind. The Obagi-C night cream, with its hydroquinone bleaching power, is similar to the Proactive repairing cream, which contains peroxide to help reduce scarring, but Obagi is overnight effective, plus it’s an antioxidant moisturizer. Both of the moisturizers in the system are very light. Adrienne dispels the myth that we need thick creams that come in fancy jars to moisturize our skin. In fact, she says, all those thick creams do is clog our pores. In tandem with the Obagi-C system, Adrienne also suggested I begin a regimen of regular microdermabrasions, every 28 days or so, in keeping with the skin’s reproduction cycle. My first microdermabrasion was in late June, and I would get four more treatments leading up to the last one four days before the wedding. “Microderms are probably the easiest, quickest pick-me-up,” says Adrienne. She recommends microdermabrasions not only for brides on their big day, but also for moms and grandmothers because as we age our skin loses it luster. “It doesn’t change who you are–just removes some dead skin,” she explains. “Dead skin cells are like a brick wall. They attach to the mortar and keep skin cells from building up again.”

BRIDAL BEAUTY
Microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals to buff off dead skin cells removed by a vacuum tube, to leave the skin shiny and smooth. There is some redness for the first few hours following, but with a fresh application of foundation, you can go right back to work or whatever you were doing. To reverse some sun damage and redness on my chest and décolletage, I tried a product called Nia 24, which uses niacin to even out skin tone and color. “It’s new,” explains Adrienne, “You won’t find this in over the counter skin preparations right now.” Again, after only a month, I noticed a much smoother skin surface; it was so much softer. And, gradually, the tone began to even as well. The combination of cyclically removing dead skin cells with regular microdermabrasions in conjunction with the prescription-strength hydroquinone and potent vitamin C in the Obagi system started to show signs of improvement after one month, and after three months, when I saw some friends I hadn’t seen in a while, they were commenting on how great my skin looked—one even said it looked glowing! By the time the wedding came, after four months of following Adrienne’s recommendations, my skin was absolutely radiant. I have continued to use the Obagi products, and feel completely comfortable without any makeup at all thanks to the restored luster in my even skin tone. W

You want to look stunning, but not too sexy, on your son or daughter’s big day. Maybe their wedding is a little more casual, but not too casual. Even though the styles are evolving to be less matronly, many fit moms are choosing cocktail length gowns and more fashion forward looks, the rules of etiquette remain: wearing white is still forbidden and the mother of the groom should defer to the mother of the bride when choosing a dress. With so many choices, there’s no need to brave the big box stores searching for the perfect dress. Enjoy the experience and make it special by shopping at local boutiques that cater to your wedding day fashion needs.
